AND OFF TO BOYD NOW - finally, another classics geek! as for Homer, i think we treat his works with too much solemnity - he himself "winks" at the reader from every single verse - why d'you think he mentions bloodshed and sin - cause eerybody loves it.
He calls his main character "polytropos" - it doesn't really mean "he who's been lost for long or travelling a lot" - it means sbd who knows a lot of tricks, a poker face fellow, who'd fit perfectly into any comedy of errors.
As for the Sirens they sing in an unknown language - so their "sailtome" is of a highly subliminal quality
