It's the very rare Bullfighting Moth! You don't ever want to come face to face with one of these guys, especially in the dark!
In actual fact it's a "67" image stack of a very small Treble Lines moth, which is only about 20mm long in total, but it has the look of a raging bull.......Almost
Moth was cooled in the fridge before taking the images so as to help keep it still for the length on time needed and was released back into the wild alive and unharmed once shooting had finished.
Had this one in last months "EPZ Nature Competition" but as usual it came nowhere ![]()

Fantastic close-up, showing an almost quizzical look !! Great shot
A fantastic close up of this fiercesome looking little critter, he looks absolutely enraged at being photographed! The detail is awesome as always. Raging Bull is most apt, I've seen this expression on your face a couple of times before Ade, once when some annoying twitchers disturbed your peace and quiet at Slimbridge back in March and also when you made your infamous appearance on the series "Teachers" on television a few years back!!!![]()

fantastic!!!!
but your ID is wrong
it is TORRERO - El torrero mata el torro ![]()
Superb detail and excellent stacking. I like the crop to get it in on the face but would have liked to have seen a little more light on the eyes to show them off more Ade as th eviewer is drawn into them. Did you get any with a little fill in light with a reflector or flash.
Richard
what , sorry didn't read it... it didn't even make the finals??? I just had a look... some people have a weird conception of nature
althought there are some real crackers in there
It's been lifted as much as I dared using the shadow tool Rich, I think the real problem was the Flash was slightly overhead of the subject......I should have used another strobe as you say just to add a bit fill in. But the trouble with this kind of work is you only get one chance, I'm surprised I got away with as many shots for the stack as I did......Never mind. But thanks for your feedback, it's a very valid point, I'll keep an eye out for it on any similar images I work on in the future.....
Thanks for everyone else's kind comments too......

Without reading your write up (or title), that's the sort of thing that was going through my mind! The close up shots make them look so chunky and robust, instead of the gentle delicate creatures they are!
A brilliant piece of photography.
The amount of detail you get in your photos of "critters" is remarkable, to think this is only 20 mm, it makes you realise that there is a world you would never see if not for photostacking! What are the sharp looking things on the front legs ? Really well done.
Elaine
"Jeez" and "wow" are very apt. Superbly done, Ade.
Dave
Impressive work!
Plus I like the fact that the moth survived the action ![]()
Well done!

They always go back alive and well, no matter what the species......If they didn't I wouldn't last two minutes with my soppy missus on the case ![]()
Thanks for the awards everyone......Very much appreciated as they always are.......Ade
Excellent pro photography again Ade! Awesome mate!
Regards
Trev.
Quote: O.K. it worked.....I feel sorry for you
Don't get me wrong I'm not bitter or anything about it, anything but! There was some really good images in last months competition and a lot of them too......I've only re-posted this image so everyone can have a look as the compo entries get overlooked unless you were the one of the winners......My time will come eventually I sure, I'll just keep trying.....Besides I can't complain EPZ had been very good to me over the last 12 months or so....![]()
Thanks for the award though Keith, again muchly appreciated as they all are!

Well I am amazed.............................. This is one fantasic image![]()
At first sight I went into a gormy trance.............. and then I realised I was pulling the same facial expression as the moth
Good job I am home alone![]()

Now that's just Rediculously UGLY, but brilliantly captured.........The detail is AWESOME ![]()
My word...Mr Bristly Brush!! A brush with death, more like, 'cos he really looks like a crazed bull staring you down! Well, a cross-eyed crazed bull...but that just makes him crazier looking ![]()
These stacked images of yours are remarkable, Ade. The detail is just insane. Because of these shots of yours I Googled 'image stacking' to learn more about it.
Well done on the GEA and all the UAs!!
Awesome image.
Andrew

Clive

Simply stunning. For the competition the awards above should mean more. Great shot and great patience.
Congratulations on the awards Ade, thoroughly deserved mate! The detail here is really incredible.
Quote: I am fascinated by what appear to be Claws halfway up the front legs
Fearsome looking tools aren't they, my only guess would be for gripping plants and other things they land on.......But a lot of moths have them or similar looking claws......
Ade
I have heard of this before but I prefer the chase as it were having been a shooting person, now I use the camera instead which is my change of heart, if I don't get the shot it's my fault no one else's! great detail I must admit and yes a roaring bull is a very apt description, thank's again for your help, best regards Leon.![]()
