SUNRISE OVER CANTLEY by davsamp

SUNRISE OVER CANTLEY

Hi Dave,

Nice piece of artwork, well done.

Dave have you thought about cheating a little and by adding some extra canvas all round and spliting the image into three you will end up with a Triptych, ok, before anyone starts a Triptych should really be three separate images with a relating theme but does it really matter when your creating a piece of art. In the mod I have not split the image into equal thirds but it will give you an idea. After you've made a selection of a third (I started on the left) select you move tool and click inside the selected area, next hold down the "Alt" and use the left arrow on the key board to move the section, count how many times you press the arrow key. This will move that section to the left, then do the same to the right hand side pressing the right arrow key the same number of times. Then where these two selection have been move fron the center portion you will see two small stretched areas on your image, all you do now is select these areas and fill with the background colour.

Just another idea Wink

Clyde Sunset by jackitec

Clyde Sunset

Hello Jack,

Nice sunset with some foreground interest but for me you have a little too much sky and not enough foreground, although I can only guess what other foreground there was to capture. Maybe a "letterbox" crop could work along with lightening the sunlight on the static caravans which is easily achieved buy going to "Levels" and lightening the "midtones" then using a layer mask and brush set to black erase the effect from the rest of the image. Leave it at 100% when erasing the sky but lower the strength (opacity) to around 25-30% for the water to help blend in the adjustment.

Hey what harm can you do to a copy.

Fun Ride by mikewatson

Fun Ride

Hi Mike,

Nice lowlight capture, well done.

Mike you can make it "in ya face" a touch more with a couple of simple adjustments in PS (which you say you have). First make a copy then in your blend modes select "Overlay", this will make the lighter colours lighter and the darker colours darker, remeber you can always erase the effect from areas that you don't want to alter. You can also reduce the opacity but to show you the effect I left it at 100%. Next make another copy and go to "Filters" and select "Other" > "High Pass", High Pass acts as a sharpening tool so don't go overboard with it apply just enough so as not to get any haloing (remember you can always reduce the opacity) and again in your blend modes selct "Overlay"

These two adjustments are the only ones I made in the mod.

Hi Phil,

The camera you used had the capabilty to shot in RAW as well as jpeg, do you know if you have this image in RAW?. If you have then you should be able to remove a certain amount (if not all) noise in the Raw sharpening window. Enlarge the image to 100% and then slowly move the "Luminace" slider until the noise dissapears or the image starts to go a little soft, if that happens back the slider off a little. Another way to remove some noise from the sky is to add around 1-2% of "Gaussian Blur" (found under filters in elements) this will soften the sky but thats ok, although I would be very careful if using it in other areas (see mod).

Phil there may be many other ways to try and I'm sure someone will let you know, but these are the ways I use.

rusty quad by williamsloan

rusty quad

Billy how are you? I didn't know you where a rusty old fan Wink Grin

Billy give this a whirl for a touch of selective sharpening practice:
1. Make a copy
2. Go to "Filters" > "Other" > "High Pass" and I selected a value of 2.
3. Hold donw the "Alt" button on the keyboard while you click and select a layer mask (you will notice the layer mask will appear black and not the normal white.
4. Let go of the "Alt" key Wink Wink (just jocking)
5. In your blend modes select "Overlay"
6. Use a brush set to "white" at 100% opacity and brush it over the face plate and the four bolt heads only (you will see the sharpening effect of high pass and overlay coming through)
7. Set the opacity of the brush to 60% and go over back of the plate and bolt heads only where it's attached to the wall/floor. Leave the background as it is to make these bits stand out.

Go on give it a go. With a little practice you can use this method of sharpening to make things stand out in an image.

Thanks for the comment last night on my "No Hope" image it was a long climb by moonlight and a bit of a let down not to get a sunrise, but that worked OK.

sunrise by mariast

sunrise

Hi Maria,

You have captured an image that has a lot of things for a pleasing sunset with the tree, water and background hill. The fact that the tree isn't sharp is not really the problem, it's where you have it in the frame. I feel that if you had turned a little more to your right placing the tree away from the centre and to the left it would work better (see mod). This is called "The Rule of Thirds", if you split your image into thirds both verticaly and horizontaly you would try and place certain parts of the image where the lines intersected. Maria do a simple search for the basic explination to the Rule of Thirds (ROT) and you will soon grasp this simple compostion rule to improving your images.

The Pine Cone by barefootwill

The Pine Cone

Hi Will,

Good DOF and to me there is something about the image that works. As Frank said in his comment I also think the cone should be placed slightly more to the right to put it more on a third (see mod). I would leave the background as it is and do a touch of selective adjustments to the post and cone. In the mod i've altered the midtones to the post and added just a touch of contrast to the post and cone to make them stand out a touch more, see what you think.

Messingham Ponds. by stupot

Messingham Ponds.

Hi Stu,

I have to agree with everything Frank has said in his comment but I feel your image would also work well with a little cropped off the bottom. Also with a few basic adjustments in PS you can make the reflections stand out a touch better (see mod)

Hi Paul,

Thanks for reading the description, I meant to put Baslow and I've altered it now. I walked down to Froggatt stone circle which I must admit was a little bit of a let down. I think I'll try again next week for a sunrise.

Thank's again Paul, take care

the wee door by williamsloan

the wee door

Hi Billy,

I think this is the type of image that can lend itself to a mono conversion, and it works well.

Billy if you want to sign your name on your images to make it more personal there is a way of actually turning your signature into a brush (see mine on other site), if you want to know how get in touch.
