Now, that is either monumentally lucky, or highly skilled...

Given the blur in one 'plane only, indicating good panning technique, maybe it's an example of "the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get"?

Perfect timing, I took some at Torquay a couple of weeks ago buy weather was really dull and they are not nearly as good as this

That seemed the most likely combination, Mike!

My efforts with a preset Soligor 400mm f/6.3, back in the Seventies, were - erm - "noticeably less successful" than this, and I have far less interest in aircraft now than then. I find that an 85mm suits most of my subjects, and I am VERY happy to leave action photography to those with faster reactions and greater skill...

And this shot remains stunning!
