Found growing on edge of local fields. Britain's ancient tree also known as May thorn.
It's white blossom have a heady scent. They blossom from mayday on wards .
Once blossom fades they develop a bright red shiny berry by autumn.just when the tree starts to loose it's leaves.

English hawthorn smells putrid.
Monogyna smells heavenly.

The hawthorn is a fairy tree. Because of it's thorns it is considered a protective tree, including against fire . a globe of woven hawthorn used to be brought home to ask the fairies to make sure the house wouldn't burn down. The five petals are considered to make a pentagram shape , a magical sign known as the Elven Cross.

I didn't know this about the Hawthorne tree, and sadly, I think that type of information is being lost, so thank you for the write up.
