The second challenge that we set our U3A Photography group at Tanfield Railway was to find a close-up/detail image...
Unlike yesterday's general view, this was totally within my comfort zone. That's not necessarily a good thing, of course.
V2 is the full frame, plus an extra blade of grass that I cloned out of V1.
I think I'll show you some kites tomorrow for a change.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

When composing this I was concentrating largely on the top of the frame, and I'm annoyed that I didn't include the bottom of the wheel. But from memory I think the unseen grasses below bottom left of frame were rather messier.
It was also composed deliberately for a square crop, but when processing it I did like the hint of complementary blue in the oil stains on the right of V2.
Thanks,
Moira
Unlike yesterday's general view.... hah ![]()

Lovely texture and detail. Think I prefer the original here though, the composition has a better balance of the elements. v1 needs a square crop with a full segment of the wheel for me.

I like the sound of this group, especially its challenges. I do really need to find a group of like minded people in order to both enjoy my passion, and above all create a friendship group and social outreach.
Version One is simply rather magical, full of wonderful, tones, textures, colour, detail and light.
Regards Nathan

We are off for our annual audience with Sir Danny. Back later.

You captured the second challenge well and it fits the bill, v1 for me well seen and presented, and Moira you have to show the third challenge for get the kites they are just full of air anyway, lol,
John
Excellent, I love the colour and texture and compo. Neither can I prefer one to the other, I love V1 for filling up the frame with the 1/4 of the wheel, and V2 for the inclusion of another circle and the part with blue grease. Both are perfectly framed.
V1 definitely for me. You've cut out the extraneous details, attractive as the blue is in V2. The little strands of grass break up the hardness of the wheel really well and have bent themselves into some lovely shapes for you. ![]()

Lovely diagonal and I also like the peeling reds, a fine detail in a rusting landscape Moira. V1 for me.

Thanks for noticing the grasses, Chis, they were my main reason for choosing this particular wheel out of the many on offer.
Thanks everyone,
Moira
I always like to take my grot ''as seen'' Moira,
but I do admit there are two things I will do first.
The first is to kick away any fag ends, and the second is to ''flatten'' the grass with my feet.
The grass is not distracting here, but it would have still felt the full force of my size seven shoes !!
(And yes,I do have small feet !!)
Mick.
Some fine tones and textures - and peeling paint - here Moira. Excellent close-ups, and I go for V1 as my fave ![]()

Wouldn't look right without the grass Moira and the comp is spot on, picking out the "bit" you have chosen is most important (does that make sense)
The grass adds a lot to the image, Moira, V1 for me.
Love the many different individual areas at slightly varying levels/depths that go to make up the whole which is the wheel, Moira. It is more than merely the sum of its individual parts. The inclusion of the grass helps with sense of individual areas. I do like the inclusion of that extra bluish colour in V2, but feel that V1 wins for the crop.

I like the rust and the peeling paint, a fine study of neglect
