Egyptian vultures have become extinct in the wild in South Africa.
V2 - Hooded Vulture - they use their long slender necks to access the meat scraps from carcass crevices that the bigger scavengers miss. This one is a victim of a power line encounter near the Kruger National Park which left him unable to fly again.
Thanx for the votes and comments on the Nyala - a special thank you to Ivor who has set him free to roam in the wild again by his great mod !!

I love these two Herman. The designer hairdo in V1 is very endearing and the Vulture in V2 reminds me of an English judge with his wig on (yes we still have such antiquated customs in the UK)!

Besides being excellent pictures, the subjects are greatly attractive. I agree with LynneJoyce's evaluation of the hairdos! We have at least one of such kind of adorned vultures in Venezuela. Not a very common sight, though.
I love to see the creatures of your side of the world.

What a pretty vulture! Well, as I have said more than once I am very fond of vultures. I have never seen a white one though, our "lost souls" in Guinea were all black.

V1 is exactly as my hair looks now, since I have just crawled out of bed; both are great presentations Herman, the write up is very informative, never seem to imagine Vultures as endangered species.

We are forecast a scorcher today, however, was very shocked to open the curtains to find fog and a real pea soup it is too. Had my lounge decorated over the weekend [of course I didn't do it] and today my new carpet is being fitted..................... I bought it over a year ago in the sales and can't remember what it looks like now, hope I still like it. I think the shop in question were somewhat relieved when I went in to organise the fitting and promptly asked if I wanted the stair carpet delivering at the same time; they were some what deflated when I said I will be back for that another day.

Two very nice shots of these vultures, Herman, and an interesting intro from you: the minute I saw V 1 I was reminded of Rod Stewart, a Scottish singer (what that's how he makes his money) who is known the world over.
The long slender neck of hooded vulture is presumably bald of feathers for the same reasons you give.
Ronnie.

Has the makings of a good shot in V1 with a few tweaks. Its underexposed, needs more sharpening, and more space in front of the bird as in the mod.

V2 is a better exposure.
