Now my first upload in ages, and in truth the first time I've picked the camera up in 2 months. Inspiration has been woefully lacking of late.

*****************************************************************************************************************

I have always been drawn to artists that were different, and troubled, Van Gogh was troubled before he was born. Born exactly a year to the day his elder brother was burried he was given the same christian name.

In this I was trying to recreate the "light" of the old masters, with a greenish, ochre finish. It is delibratly dark to reflect Van Gogh's mood at the time of his incident with the ear. Again that is another episode shrouded in intrique. Was it self inflicted as commonly believed, or the result of a conflict with Gaugain - an experienced fencer.

What I would say is this looks so much better in print

The lighting is excellent Nick and the yellow ochre color works well. Superbly processed.

You've created a work of art depicting the work of an artist.
The candle light is just perfect for the atmosphere you wanted to create.

Its not bad Nick.

But you've lost some compositional "pull" by having the easel upright.

Might be a better arrangement if you angled the easel on the same plane as the painting , moved the candle more central and dropped the usual distracting elements like that rag on the left and the glasses with that sharp highlight running through.

Chuck in a bit of faux omnidirectional lighting and ..it works.

Beautifully muted.

Blimey! Tough crowd (above!). It works for me. Great to see a still life on the site..............they are fairly few and far between. I've just ejected my spare bed to make space for setting some up (poor grammar!)

Not sure about this one Nick,it does look a tad on the static line for me,even for a still life.
I like the content but reckon good ole Dave has some constructive suggestions above.
Maybe a slightly lower POV would help. There seems to be lots of gaps & for me it's not 'running through' the frame...that paintbrush is giving me a block to the rest of the image.
Colours are good,great concept.
