This is the new Metro tram interchange at Newton Heath in Manchester. I've been trying to get pictures of this for a long time and never been really satisfied with the results. At last I've got hold of a medium format camera and using Delta 100 film, I'm amazed at the quality of the print. Not so impressed by the subsequent scan but you can't have everything!

Excellent shot Nick, and the composition works well despite being very complex and containing a lot of different elements.

It does look a bit grainy though and I am sure you could get a much better scan if you play around with the scanner settings, in particular don't let the scanner software do anything at all, eg. interpolation, sharpening or whatever.

Thanks for your comments folks.

Chris, I've rescanned at a considerably higher resolution with my ancient flatbed scanner with completely neutral settings and it seems to have done the trick - thanks.

Phil, I'm a sucker for over complicated scenes. They don't always work as well as this (understatement....!)

I'm not into B/W but I find this a very interesting and eye catching shot. My only adverse comment is about the black splodge on the lower right hand side, I feel some cropping could have been done without loss to the overall picture. However it still gets my click.

Thanks folks. RysiekJan, I think the splodge is a function of my inept scanning. The original print has some detail in there that I can't get at on the scanner. I'll have a go at reprinting it in the darkroom and lighten the whole splodge up. Cropping the image would shift the balance too much and I'd lose some of that great sky into the bargain!

I see this as a tall narrow letterbox cropped to either side of the path.

i imagine the original is blissful. terrific shot great exposure fabulous tones. yeah shame about the scan. have you tried scanning b&w as if it were colour? just a thought.

Hi Nick
living in Manchester I have found your work of pictures taken in the city wonderful I now have a different "EYE" when walking around town. This shot of the Metro interchange is a very challenging shot I have seen it many times and have still not given it Justice. I really like the black and white version here. together with the sky trails excellent photo.

Thanks barry john, I keep going back to that Interchange and trying different things. A most frustrating building sometimes! Thanks for your kind comments - there'll be some more Manchester shots on the website in my profile very shortly!
