My favourite early spring critter is Cicindela campestris, more commonly known as the green tiger beetle, and is a widespread species of tiger beetle. The elytra and thorax vary from light to dark green and the pattern also varies. They are sun-loving creatures and can fly rapidly, making a loud buzzing noise. They are found in sandy areas where the larvae dig burrows and ambush passing ants and other crawling insects. They run very fast, making them notoriously difficult to capture on camera. They are carnivorous, feeding on a variety of other invertebrates. Long sensory bristles spring from various parts of their bodies but these are very slender and only visible close up.
