Thanks for all your good wishes from my last upload, good news my mother is improving so much she could be home next week, phew.
Continuing the Hidden Vietnam series, this lady was in the market at Meo Vac smoking her water pipe with home made tobacco. This was the second of our market visits that day, the first starting at 6.30am at Dong Van but I was their at 5.00 am, why well the hotel the night before cancelled our reservation, long story for another upload, so with not much sleep where we did finally find a bed I wandered the market alone for an hour before getting a coffee and meeting our guide. After Dong Van we drove to Meo Vac for breakfast, a bowl of Pho (noodles etc, not sure what the etc was) then wandered around this huge market full of ethnic tribes some that have never been officially documented by ethnologists, the others there were Giay, Dzao Ao Dai, H'mong, Co Lao and Xuong tribes. We were the only westerners in the market, mind you the whole ten days we were in the area we only saw 4 other westerners, shows how remote the area is but walking around the market we were offered food and rice wine and our first drink of weasel coffee (if you're not sure what or where weasel coffee comes from, google it ?) lovely.
This type of pipe smoking is all over the northern region of Vietnam, apparently the bamboo pipe the large section is filled with water to level I am not sure and the homemade tobacco goes in the small pipe at the side, somehow the water acts as a filter, did I try it, no.
Thanks for looking
