They are done using Apophysis which enables the production of random 'flames' using mathematical techniques which are controlled by the user.

If you google 'Apophysis' you will be able to download a copy and try it out. Its free so be brave and have a go. Unfortunately there is no user manual yet so you need to be a bit adventurous. It did take me 3 weeks before I knew what I was doing.

I also use Paintshop Pro to make variants if Apophysis can't do them.
