A graceful Siberian Iris for you this time, IRIS SIBIRICA, which has been a symbol of royalty and divine protection for centuries throughout the world.
This flower is named after Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow, because of the wide variety of flower colours in this genus, and the iris of the eye is named after her too, to reflect the many colours of the eye.
The word "iris" means "eye of heaven" because the goddess Iris would take messages from ‘the eye of heaven’ to earth travelling on the arc of the rainbow.
But she is also known as one of the goddesses of the sea and the sky, who travels with the speed of wind from one end of the world to the other, and into the depths of the sea and the underworld.
For the coastal-dwelling Greeks, the rainbow's arc was most often seen spanning the distance between cloud and sea, and so the goddess was believed to replenish the rain-clouds with water from the sea, with the use of her pitcher. She restored calm and balance to the forces of nature after a storm.
Iris is represented either as a rainbow, or as a beautiful young maiden with golden wings on her shoulders, wearing a multi-hued gown, and is associated with communication, messages, and new endeavors.
Her name contains a double meaning, being connected both with iris, "the rainbow," and eiris, "messenger".

I was thrilled to receive 7 User Awards for my clematis, a record for me.
Thankyou Gary (Growmore), Ronnie (RonnieAG), Ann (EAS), John (lifesnapper), Lin (sweetpea62), Dave (WhiteRose1) and Ken (franken).

Pamela.

Another fine shot Pamela and lyrical description too.
I think I would prefer to see Iris as that beautiful young maiden
who needs her wings clipped, rather than a rainbow however.
Not sure about her multi hued gown though.
I did not like these awful ones they wore on that Big Fat Gypsy Weddings on the telly.
And I certainly hope Iris was not as fat as some of these Gypsies either !!

The detail is, as always, spot on Pamela, but what I really like here are the background colours complementing the colours of the iris, and the arc of purple at the top fading to green! It's just beautiful!
