An aerial bomb, I think. As far as I'm aware the only rockets used in WW1 looked like elongated lollipops on sticks - the same sort of shape as modern fireworks. A shell would have parallel sides as it would have to travel through the barrel of a gun.
A most unusual object from an unusual pov. It would love to drop on that painting!
