This may be my last upload of the year. I've injured my finger and I can only type with one hand for a while!
First light at the northern tip the Monterey penninsula about 90 miles south of San Francisco. It was one of those mornings that really makes you feel so fortunate to be alive to see this in person. The birds were out and the surf was up. In the distance about 40 miles away to the north are the 3,000 foot Santa Cruz mountains.
This was another very 'refreshing' image to make but I had my plastic bag at hand. It may appear as though I sometimes make light of the dangers of the Pacific, but I do respect the sea. Just last week, a big wave rider named Peter Davi lost his life in 70 (yes seventy!) foot surf not far from here. He was preparing for the Mavericks surf contest by riding the big ones nearby.
I stay away from those!

Text book stuff Patrick. Light is beautiful and the exposure is spot on.
Phil.
Nice capture of those powerful waves. Your images are stunning.
Anne
Thanks for your comments!
Yes Martin, this is a sheltered spot as it is inside the bay and the big breakers are behind the rock to the left.
LOL Tony...sorry!
Thanks Sarah, I'll try my best.
Patrick
Thanks for stopping by! There are so many things happening in this area that is was hard to settle on anything.
Janet, is that why you are called 'Chase?' Because of the chasing waves? Okay, time to go capture some big ones just for you! The problem is that they break far offshore so I'll have to go to extremes I think to get one!
Patrick
Stunning, great light, detail and composition.
Sylvia
beatiful light and composition - you make it look easy.
Thanks for dropping in!
LOL Jeanie, but I could get some great shots if I moved in a little closer!
I wish it was Ian. Fortunately, nobody sees what I do out there or I would be laughed off the beach!
Patrick
The guys who make it look easy are the ones with talent. I am sure you work really hard at your images.
Never seen a duff upload from you yet, keep posting; it inspires the fog and rain bound English ![]()
Wow truly beautiful capture! Light, sea, waves, sky the whole package!
Marilyn x
Lovely light with a sense of movement and power as the waves crash in.
Thanks for dropping by!
Well Ian, I am sun-bound for the time being. No hope for any decent light for at least a week! So much for the rainy season! Maybe next weekend.
Yes Marilyn, I tried to get everything that was happening into the frame at once. This is very close I think.
Patrick
Thanks for your comments!
Come on over Kris, the water is... well cold but the weather is good....well too good usually for photography but anyway.....
Kathy, if we could just average out our weather, that would be perfect for good light I think!
Yes, Martin. Even an underwater housing for the camera..and me would help I think!
Patrick
Thanks Lisa!
Yes Guy, the rock in back is about 20 feet tall so the spray is above that. But the waves on the Pacific side to the left are much larger. These ones on the bay side are more manageable... and surviveable! My tripod was on a 6 foot tall rock above the sand I was still getting wet every time. I wanted to be close but still get a higher view out to the mountains. And the bigger waves were blocking them.
Patrick
Superb colours in this one Patrick!
I love the mix of yellows and cyans and the composition is excellent.
Well done again!
Scotty
Thanks for stopping by! Sorry I haven't been around today but I'll be catching up during the week.
Definitely Gil.....
You wouldn't want to Joline!
Yes Terry, I wanted a bit of open ocean in there and the shadow allows a view into the water with no glare, but some foreground still had light on the bubbles. I wanted a bit of everything in this one.
Jennnn.... Did I mention that the tripod was firmly attached to my surf board? lol...
Patrick
Loads of danger behind the gorgeous image Patrick, you do the hard work for the delight of us chair bound commentators.
Lovely as ever and always a great pleasure to view.
All the very best
Dougie
Another top draw shot Patrick... Must say you have one hell of a large top draw!!
John
Good light and composition Patrick but I can't help thinking that the shot would have more impact if the wave was washing over the foreground rocks and mingling with the light.
Terribly picky aren't I. ![]()
John
Thanks for dropping by!
I do try Dougie, but you get out there in the freezing cold to get your shots so we're even!
LOL John (scallop)...
Yes Paul, it was VERY refreshing.
Thanks Suzan. Are you guys going to have a winter? We are getting the polar air constantly for several weeks now so you are getting the warm air.
John (slogger), that is when I'm running for my life! Actually I do have one like that just before I got hit, but the bigger ones go way over that rock and look messy. Ideally though, yes, so I made sure the foreground have a little foam in there.
Patrick
Patrick,
Outstanding..!!! Then your work is always, a pleasure to view.
Gavin ...
Thanks for your comments!
I think you'll be getting it Suzan, though the cold air is stubbornly staying out west for now and heading north as it moves east.
Neither can I Freda. The front page of the local paper showed a giant wave today.
Patrick
Great light in this simple and beautiful image. JNC
Thanks for looking in!
It does seem that way sometimes Dave (dp). Timing it is really hard sometimes, because you want to catch all of this motion in a non-chaotic way. And then there is the timing problem of being in the right place at the right time. I guess it is like that with everything in a way, timing and luck count for more than people realize.
John (laurel), you do make a different frame for each one, so it does fit in when you look at everything in your pf. So that is fine.
Well Kathy, next time keep going. I'll show you and whoever you bring around.
Thanks John (robway), but you don't see the rubbish shots I make!
Patrick

I'll try to get back to you when my finger heals.
Patrick
Thanks for stopping by!
Matt, it is the small finger on my shutter (right) hand. And I'm right-handed. But I can still use my left hand to take the shots. No rock climbing for a while though! I hope you have a great Christmas!
Thanks Pete and Tina!
Patrick
Another awesome image Patrick, this is top drawer stuff as per usual
This is a beautifully lit shot, Patrick. You have captured the power of the sea very well too. I would like to thank you for taking the time to comment on so many of my uploads over the past year and to wish you and your family a happy Christmas and a great new year.
Ted
The finger is slowly getting better but I'm still writing with one hand, so I won't be out on EPZ for a couple of weeks I think.
Thanks Chris and Edmund!
Ted, here's to a happy Christmas and new year to you and your family as well. You've put up a lot of great shots this year and I bet there will be lots more in the new year!
Patrick
What a great capture. Your images are always so sharpe and clean
Hi Patrick,

Thanks for dropping by, and for the kind wishes! They mean a lot to me.
My finger is partially better but I need to have some work done on it next week, so I'll probably upload a new one on Monday while I can still use my hand.
LOL Colin, I had a great Hogmanay!
Patrick
Hello Patrick.
Long time no see. Happy New Year to you.
Myself, I am too busy with uploading daily pictures at Treklens.com (Janone) so no time left so far for epz aswel, but I intent to in near future again.
The main reason, I visit your site and atmire you fantastic picture, is, I mentioned your name and portfolio to an other photographer from Califonia, who also upload on treklens. His name is Vincent James.
Will be nice when he have a look on your portfolio too.
Very best wishes from Jan1
See you later.
Great work, Patrick. I love the contrast of the warm light on the rocks against the cooler tones of the sea. I love the contrast of the blur of the sea against the pin sharpness of the rocks, and I like the capture of the distant crashing wave as this provides a focal point to lead the eye to. In short - I love it. ![]()
Pete
Thanks for your comments!
3 Years Suzi? Aargh!
Yes Jon, it is cold but I still use water shoes. It's about 54 (12c)
