The Big Sur coast (100 miles south of San Francisco) was blanketed in a 2500 foot deep low cloud layer, but this part of the coastline bends to the east just south of Carmel alowing holes to develop in the fog. The camera is pointing straight in the direction of the oncoming fog. This hole allowed the light to cast itself across the beach and mountians one hour before sunset. So it was just a matter of waiting for the sun to drop down and shine through the constant hole onto the mountian and beach. It took about an hour of waiting before conditions were right.
This is just a deep fog layer, as no rain has fallen here since late April.
1/4 second exposure @F22 with ND grad 0.6 over the sky only. F22 was used only to slow down the shutter to get a longer exposure time which created the motion effect on the wave.

. . the timing on that wave curl . .and the light on the hills are the making of this one Patrick! . .
Mike.W
Another majestic image!! Superb! Love the action you captured in the waves. CLICK!
Super clarity in the shot. A wonderful freshness about it.
Waiting and knowing your subject-- made you a great image-- I hope these will find theri way into a book-- they deserve a huge audience! I am not a fan of the slow water thing with waves , but here, I like the play of the waves on the beach and the wonderful greens within them.
A supurb and glorious morning image! Jennnnn
Thanks for looking!
Hi Doug (wyatturp). I'm doing fine. I wish I had more time for EPZ, as work has been busy. But photography here in the summer is difficult anyway, as there is only fog at the ocean and no clouds elsewhere.
LOL Jouko, the nerve of people... interrupting your EPZ time. Especially when you got an HC!
Patrick
Beautiful landscape.
I like alone stone in the sand.
Great composition, good shot!
Noemi
Hi Patrick, you have captured some beautiful waves and clouds in this one Patrick,I like how the clouds are low and the colours/tones,the way they are just skimming over the mountains, the texture, ruggedness and angles and perspective.Wonderful composition.I wish i was there.Take care.Ann![]()
All sound work, Patricko...not moving any boats for me...but you know....look fine n all.

There's only three places in the world I would really like to see in my life and northern California is one of them.
Your presentations of it Patrick are always an inspiration.
Allan
Thanks for your comments!
Ann, it is just a short plane ride away you know! This is a great walking beach. And on a flat day like this, it is not too noisy either.
Thanks Keith, just wait until winter!
Allan, where are the other two places?
Patrick
Great open shot, good colour, love the wave action and the hint of sunlight on the cliff.
And thanks mate.
There's so much to like in this Patrick - the light on the hills, the colour in that breaking wave, the way you've avoided the tip of the rock encroaching onto the hills beyond. The only thing I would may be change is getting rid of the seaweed in the foreground on the right. I do find it a bit distracting.
Very nice to see a picture from you again ![]()
Mike
that little patch of light on them there hills sets this apart
Dave
Wow Stunning image, well taken,Wonderful light composition and colours
Beautiful work

Thanks for your comments!
No problem Kim!
Yes Mike, it was difficult to get the top of the rock below the edge of the ocean. I had to put the tripod on some driftwood that I found and the lens was at eye level. I thought about the seaweed, but we'll see what others think. Good to notice it.
Patrick
worth the wait, lovely colours in the wave
christine
LOL........Quick guests...they didn´t speak English and just left me a champagne bottle for my holiday : ))
My kind of guests...LOL.......
...and now to the main thing....
This is wonderful and same time dramatic shot...
Beautiful light and great composition in this....
An hour waiting time! If I ever should wait one hour, it would be a night shot for sure...LOL....I´m too restless soul...LOL...
Jouko
Wow! If my guests would have stayed longer, this shot would have got already 100 clicks!
Not bad, not bad at all! LOL.....
Jouko
a lovely shot i really like the movement of the waternice soft light too .
What a great scene to choose Patrick, beautiful light and soft tones are just perfect, impressive work, Adrian
(Thank you for your comments much appreciated, Adrian)
Thanks for your comments!
Jouko, they must not know about EPZ, so they can be forgiven - LOL! I'm glad you like it. Someday you must visit!
Patrick
LOL...Uncivilized! Not knowing EPZ! LOL....
I´m off to make some online lottery and IF I win tonight....THEN I´ll STAY for a while(a week?? a month??) at your home....already fixed that guest room??? LOL........
Jouko
LOL...Depends on the lottery win...LOL......
Thumbs up! LOL...or down...LOL.....
Jouko
great shot - like the blurred sea water and the use of the light. Brooding clouds are always more interesting.
nice one patrick, love the light on those hills and you've caught that wave just right.
steve
With that patience can I understand why the picture gets extraordinary
Peter
Nice low light just catching the hills. Well composed with the rock in the foreground and the wave just reaching shore.
Steven
Love the colours in the blurred waves Patrick and the capture of sunlight on the distant hills. Top shot yet again
Mike
excellent use of the grad to assist the exposure. The composition and scene are both very good and I like the way you have taken the shot on the turn of the wave.
A real beauty. Youve captured the light in that wave perfectly.
W
The light on this capture is wonderful, with coast & land complementing each other well and the sweeping beech directing the viewer's gaze. A gem.
Tommy
Beautiful bit of light you've captured there and I love the exposure.
A fantastic seascape, great capture of water movement, super composition, lighting and colours
Another glorious sight, Patrick. The shaft of light across the bay looks fantastic and the water colour and movement work well together.
Colin
Glad to have another image of yours to drool over! Another fantastic capture with that lovely use of shutter speed. Must have got that from me ![]()
Excellent light and tremendous colour in the wave.
Mark
That curly wave does it for me on this one Patrick, great cool colours inside it as it rolls.Lovely composition, clarity is excellent.Looks like a great beach to stroll along.
Janet
Really nice Patrick, the only thing that sprung to mind was maybe just a smidge higher to get a little more seperation between the pyramid and the cliffs. Still though, really nice.
Thanks for your comments!
It would be a good idea Russ (LeCCy) but I already had the tripod on some driftwood and right at eye level to try to get the rock to fit under the shoreline. And with nothing but beach behind me, any higher would not have been easy!
Patrick
Is Clint still down there?
Beautiful work. I like the colour of the water and the way you caught that wave Patrick.... excellent image.
Jeanie
Breathtaking Patrick, I'm not sure what to add to all the worthy praise that this shot has been given! Worth your wait for that wonderful light on the mountains and shoreline, the jade tones of the breaking wave does it for me though!
Sarah ![]()
Stunning Patrick, love the strong composition teamed with the delicate colours!
gill
...almost like Cornifornia!
i think you have the shutter speed just right at 1/4 sec Pat to catch wave action, you've caught some nice colours in the wave and the way the sunlight has lit the hills is very effective, well done.
this is such a great image of Big Sur, one of my favorite spots to photograph along the California coast..the colors are a true spot on, I was glad to see the green on the wave and very clean sand...just how I remember the last time I was there...
Excellento !
alex
Fantastic seascape, Patrick. Thanks for the tech details (as usual). -=Walter
Pat stunning sea scape that really invites the eyes in to it as it is simply breathtaking!
stay well
tonymarq
Another beauty Patrick. If you were to frame and hang all of your good shots you'd need to buy a bigger house (or print them very small).
Dave.
Some lovely wave action here Patrick - very well timed. I also like the way the light is just touching the distance hills.
Debbie
I just love the colour of the water and that wave movement, Patrick. Delighted to be number 100!
Jim
Thanks for looking in!
LOL - Jeanie. Yes Clint lives literally right over the hills (maybe 5 miles away) from where this was taken.
Yes Gill, Cornwall without the rain!
Terry, 1/4 second sems just right for slow moving waves like this. Maybe slightly shorter times for faster waves.
Alex, it is one of my favourite spots too. I'm planning on hitting a few othe rplaces nearby when I get a chance!
Patrick
Hey P......Nice work once again!
Definitely a lovely shot, beautiful light hitting the rocks, your patience paid off!
Can't think of anything rotten to say either...![]()
Cheerios,
Suzan ![]()
Have a good weekend...![]()
Hi Patrick. This is a belter. Love the light on the hills, the sea just reaching the rock, and your timing on that beautiful wave is spot on. Love it.
Brian.
Impressive capture Patrick.Love that wave, its a suspended beauty.Great light on the mountain to finish it off. Most excellent.Have a good weekend.
~Alley~
superb Patrick - the detail, comp and that touch of sun light make for a wonderful image
Fabulous, Patrick - congratulations on another quality image ...
Susie :o)
Beautiful light Patrick and the wave id a peach with nice colour in the water.
All the very best
Dougie
Hello Patrick, I see you are down the sea level for this one...despite the limited light you have impressively pulled out good colours and detail...the exposure on the wave movement is excellent.
Doug.
Love all the colours in this. Well composed Patrick. John
Just a little note.....
I think I figured Sir Jouko out....
SGTSYPA:
'So Good To See You Pestering Again'...LOL!
Have a nice Sunday...![]()
Suze x
This could be a water colour..just beautiful light colours tone..all superb..
Don![]()
Thanks for looking in!
LOL - Suzan. Your guess makes sense. It is a great Sunday, but still not a real cloud in sight, just fog at the coast.
Yes Doug, this one took a while to get. The light was rather flat for a long time, but eventually the mountians scraped holes in the fog and as the sun went lower, the light got better and better.
Patrick
Wonderful composition and great colours, lovely lighting and sky, beautifully done love it.
Mo.
Wow! As usual the waiting was worth the resulting image. Really nice composition and perfect selection of shutter speed to retain enough detail yet also make the wave look dynamic and full of energy.
Just beautiful.
Ben
Good clarity throughout and the captured wave movement make this for me. Nick.
Wonderful - lighting, colors, well worth the wait. It was somewhere along here that my daughter and son-in-law became engaged - I'd love to visit there too some day.
Kathy
Oh for just an ounce of your talent! Superb! Fantastic light, colour and composition. Your work deserves all the attention it gets and more, you are truly a talented man.
Tracy
Nice shot sir.
Arriving in SF at the weekend & hope to be in Big Sur area toward the end of the month.
Steve
What can I say that hasn't already been said Patrick (about the only word that hasn't been used is "c**p"
but I really can't use that word in relation to this super shot of yours...so I'll just use "fabulous" instead!! Your capture of that breaking wave really is something else.
Gwyn
stunning, stunning, and, uh, stunning...
did I mention this is stunning? LOL!!
Beautiful!!!!!!
Thomas
Looks like the place to be with that lovely beach and the great lighting - superb picture
Hawk
Beautiful ligthing. Great picture, as always from you. Love it!
Benjamin
It's all been said really, but I'll say it again anyway just to reinforce it (
) the sky and the light on the mountains are wonderful and I love the wave! If I were to nitpick, I'd have to agree with Mike about the seaweed...but that would be nitpicking!
Perfection! You really do know how to capture those waves well too ☼☼☼☼☼
Rob
Thanks for looking!
Great place to do it Kathy! Come on over and I'll tell you where to go.
Tracy, you have plenty of talent. I've seen enough of your work to know better!
Steve, I'll tell you where to go too if you would like.
Yes, Cathy, I could take it or leave it in, I'm not sure.
Patrick
This is just great. Love the composition and the wave motion you've captured. I thought you'd need a longer exposure time than 1/4 sec, but I've just learned another tip. Thanks
Keep 'em coming
Richard
Another one of your fantastic California beach images.
Antonio
Gorgeous photo again, you are amazing. Really must go to Big Sur next time i visit my brother. That wave action is great.
