Hanalei Bay, Kauai (in the very southwest of Scotland according to Jeanie - LOL) is a 3 mile long perfect crescent of sand surrounded by the worlds rainiest mountains. Over 500 inches of rain drench Mt. Waialeale (2nd mountain from the left) every year and about 100 inches fall on this beach. Waterfalls are often seen in the mountains (5 shown in the big version), but it is usually sunny during the day.
A barrier reef protects this beach so the waves are small. But the ocean swells are large, so every minute or so, the water rushes in way past where my camera was. It is deceiving because you don't see any warning that it is coming, since the waves are small.
There was not a single person on the beach for this sunrise, as there are no hotels on this beach. Paradise!

Well captured look a stunning place to visit even more so when you are the only one there.
Wonderful stuff.. If you take away the palm trees, this could be where I have been with that fine white beach and the mountain backdrop... only a few degrees (!) cooler where I was : )
Jeanie
it sounds and looks like paradise to me Patrick, just beautiful
rich
All your shots are superbly executed and processed, and I love the lighting in this. However, it doesn't quite ring my bell like the others ![]()
Lots of movement here - the waves and clouds really create a dynamic feeling,
Ian.
Dripping with moisture Patrick, my monitor's now wet.....
Darren
Just stunning Patrick, awesome composition, the detail and light throughout is superb!
Rgds
Paul
Haa haa!!!! - West Coast actually Patrick.... and we saw more seals than people, lol!
Jeanie
it doesn't ring bells in that's it's a bit tourist brochure......but it's way better than the last batch
![]()
I even clicked it
What a lovely beach, Patrick. Hawaii must be paradise to visit.
Antonio
The reflected clouds give the foreground vital interest and colour enabling it to stand up against that impressive backdrop.
I'd love to see those waterfalls in the distance closer up!
Mike
Thanks for looking in1
Yes Jeanie, It was about 25c on this morning. Nice and steamy but not hot yet. I saw the Hawaiian Monk seals on the island too. They are fearless and just sit there as you walk by. There is a huge fine if you are caught disturbing them!
Yes Martin, this is a calmer one than most. I wanted to add a little variety to the PF.
Thanks Keith. Most bruchures just show blue water and sky at mid-day, so maybe I should send this to the Tourist bureau! I have lots more from here, but haven't uploaded them yet.
'Chewing' Cathy? Like a cow! uggghhhh....
Really Mike? LOL - any suggestions? Like one with 7 waterfalls? Never mind! It may see the light of day yet but I'm holding out for when I hit a dry spell (like all 6 months of summer here) and need a good upload to get back on track!
Patrick
This has to be one of my favorites from you, Patrick, and oh boy that's saying something. Although the cloud's reflection in the wet sand is a joy to look at, what really packs a punch is that distant landscape. The way the light plays on the mountains and clouds takes the breath away. What a beauty.
The luminous quality of the wet sand is quite beautiful, and the waterfalls are so clear in this shot. The light is simply outstanding. A very lovely portion of paradise.
Allie
PARADISE for me.................
...just enough people
Miss some kick though, sorry : (
I´m in this winky-wonky mood still...
I´m as good as dead now...LOL
Jouko
Thanks for looking!
Yes Ian, it is so amazing there that I literally almost forgot to take the shot. I just stood there watching the sheets of rain and light pass by. I should have taken 10 shots but I only took 2 at this time. Both turned out well fortunately.
It is pardise Allie.
Don't worry Jouko, wait until you see the one I took when the snow covered the beach! Just kidding...
Paul (sut68), I was just thinking the same thing as I look at this database I have to work on today.
Patrick
Goddammit, you scared me to death! SNOW in Aloha-land! LOL..........
Jouko
Thanks Paul and Peter!
Jouko, the higher elevations (above 11,000 feet) on the big island do get SNOW and people go skiing there!
Patrick
Stunning shot. Love your whole PF...
Sorry I miss your uploads now and again...
Beautiful reflected colours in the wet sand, the water looks as if it was moveing,
top rate shot I like it.
Bill
This is so beautiful Patrick, really like the reflections on the wet sand.
Lisa
Must be paradise- in spite of all the rain!! Wonderful shot.
Ron
The reflected sky in the waters on the shore are magical, as it the entire image Patrcik. Another stunning composition
Mike
The clouds reflected in the foreground sand save the foreground from being rather devoid of interest (but I guess you knew that!) The water movement has been captured to a T and the mountains with the clouds above are just superb. Love the light on the distant shore too, brings the greens out beautifully.
martin
Truly beautiful scape Patrick with awesome colours sky light and reflections.
Mark.
Luminous is the word, stunning place and wonderful shot.
Ann ![]()
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
patrick it's all been said already. STUNNING.

Rg Tony

Malcolm
Great photo and a good description. I know where I wish I was!
Man!!! I have got to go to this place. Time to break in that new credit card! LOL The only problem is that I would never want to leave once I got there. LOL Did you recently go here, or is this one from the past that you were hiding from us?
I can imagine what it must have looked like there Patrick, beautiful image, Adrian
You've done a great job on behalf of the Hawaiian tourist board.
Superb image
Alan
As has been said, great touch to include the reflections in the foreground.
Dave
Paradise perfectly portrayed - another cracker from the master
Bruce
Paradise indeed Patrick. I bet you enjoyed this scenery and the conditions. I like all the elements of this shot, the sky, the reflections on the sand and the moist, lush greenery on the mountains. Terrific shot.
Nigel
What a wonderful serene capture graced by extraordinary light and composition. Excellent camera work, Patrick….again!
Eric

Hi Patrick,
Isn't this where puff the magic dragon lived.
Puff the magic dragon, lived by the sea,in a misty land by the ocean,in a land called Honalee(is how it's pronounced). It was a song about a dragon when i was wee,not that i've got any bigger............lol.
That is a stunning place, the light, shading, beautiful tones and atmosphere. It's like heaven and paradise meeting together.
Take care.Ann![]()
Excellent work as always, Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
P.S. Couldn't think of more to say, I am down with the flu!
Beautiful shot. Headed there with SO gajj at the end of April. Hope you left a few shots for us.
bill
Stunning work Patrick, gorgeous light and composition. Love those cloud reflections.....
Ali
Another stunning shot Patrick. Really love the tones and colours you capture through your shots.
john
Stunning!!!! Wish I was there and I wouldn't spoil the beach with footprints - honest!!
Thanks for your comments!
Dennis (chamberlain), this is from my last visit. I have a bunch of other ones I haven't uploaded here yet. I want to spread them out a bit. And yes, it is difficult to leave and every time I go, I spend half my time figuring out how I could stay. However great it is, it is still a black rock in the middle of the ocean.
I definitely enjoyed it Nigel!
I hope you are feeling better Greg!
Bill, drop me a note and I'll tell you where to go and when. I only got about 1/3 of the shots I saw there. Jost not enoug time.
LOL Jeannie...
Patrick
Thansk Maddie!
Yes Ann, there are many theories about that song. And it is mentioned in Hanalei quite a bit. LOL - better than the theory that it is about the smoking of illegal substances!
Patrick
Hi Patrick
what a beautiful shot, lovely light and nicely composed. Beautiful reflection in the wet sand
Derek
Such a beautiful touch of Paradise Patrick, love the clear colours & the feeling of fresh clean air here.
Janet
Another first class image from you Patrick, I like the reflection here and the depth this has with those background mountains.
I had a good look at your website today, very impressive display of some places I would love to visit.
Chris
Oh boy! This is painterly. Stuning image.. Stunning place to be and to see.
i can almost feel the dampness in the air here Pat, a very pretty scene although i would prefere i think a milky sea with a long exposure, nice reflections on the beach too.
Thank you for looking!
Chris, I highly recommend Mexico or Hawaii, as well as anywhere in California of course!
LOL - Sorry terry, no milk tanker spill on this beach on this day! There are some clouds out today so get out there.
Patrick
Hi Patrick,
The picture/scene alone is fabulous, but I love the reflection of teh clouds in the wet sand as sucha plus!!!
Another stunner!
Thomas
Hi Patrick looks like i have missed some great picture of yours , well done that man.
Doug
Holy smokes, Patrick, this is GORGEOUS!!! Your pictures are always beautiful anyway but this has a certain lovely magical glow about it. Those clouds, that light, that 'mist'...wow...
A...
Now this has whetted my apetite Patrick. My youngest daughter is getting married on Kauai in June 2008. Fantastic image.
C
considering the endless list of comments, let me know if there is one pixel left in the photo that hasn't been commented on yet, and I will be more than happy to comply :o)
For now though, let me just say it looks rather fab
Thanks for your comments!
Yes Mr. ChiliMan, the sky really does glow over there. I wish it would here in California but the clouds disappear quickly after storms.
Chant, if you want some great landscapes, I'll show you exactly where to go and when according to the time of year. There were shots I could not get in November that you could get in June because of the angle of the sun at that time.
LOL Koen, nobody has mentioned the log on the left side of the beach. It eventually washed down the beach and I got a good shot of it next to the pier.
Patrick
Log ? Now you really spoilt it for me :o(
I thought it was a lady sunbathing topless on the beach.
Actually that was the reason why I clicked for the darn pic ;o)
No Doubt this is a great picture. The capture of light in the clouds and their reflection on the wet sand really make this photo. As for composition... would have been tempted to start the frame at the point where the bulk of the clouds start reflecting and included more of the sea. BUT, you were there, I wasn't and I have to trust your judgement on this.
Tony
LOL - Too late Koen, you can't have it back!
True Tony, I could have either pointed down a bit or made it extra wide. If I had pointed down I would have chopped off the tops of the middle-sized clouds while gaining their reflections. And if I has made the comp wider, the mountians would have appeard smaller, and I wanted to show the waterfalls. But I do think I experimented with that at the time so I may have to go into the archives to see if there is a shot like that. Thanks for the idea!
Patrick
A beautiful scene well captured. I love the clouds and the way they are reflected in the sand.
Ted
WOW, Patrick, this is wonderful!
I really do Luv the lighting within the clouds as well as the water streaming down the mountains that you managed to capture.
You sure are getting good with that Pocket Instamatic....Is that 110 format?
![]()
I'll bet you're wishing you were still in Hawaii with all of those lovely clouds and light fog hovering throughout the valley.....You sure these aren't the Smokies?? Hee Hee!
Well, you could have cloned in the swaying palms and whitecaps....![]()
You've done well once again, a gold star on the EPZ blackboard....![]()
Have a wonderful evening and stop thinking how HAPPY you are that I am back...LOL!
OK, Nexxxxxxt.....
Suze x
Great capture, Patrick - lovely to have that inviting scene all to yourself, an opportunity you didn't waste, well done ...
Susie :o)
Thanks for your comments!
LOL Suzan, I'm not sure about the format. It is from one of those plastic film cameras you get at the local drug store. But it is the photographer, not the camera, right? And it is good to see that you are back in fine pestering form!
Yes Dave, they are hard to come by.
Susie, I only had it for about 20 minutes but that was enough.
It is Mark!
Patrick
Gosh thats even more rain than here in Wales and thats a lot!! LOL
Love the reflections in the sand and lush green of the bg mountains.
Mari ![]()
Superb image Patrick, lovely light and composition,a wonderful shot.
Mo.
Your photography amazes me Patrick - you, run out of ideas - never!
Sarah ![]()
absolutely love the way you showcase water - every single one is very nicely presented!
Very nice Patrick. Great capture of light on the clouds. Well done. John
Thanks for looking!
LOL Mari, Wales is a desert compared to here! But yet it is sunny most days.
Thanks for the kind words Sarah, but it does happen!
Patrick
Like the composition Patrick and the reflections off the the beach.
MikeA.
Like the light and the sky Patrick as always exxelent.
But the left is missing something i dont know what and i cannot explain what it is but it needs something.
A rock,a Tree,someone.
It just dont Balance and sit well for me and i hate saying that with all the clicks and comments you have.
But thats me,the odd one out..
Giving ya a click
But telling of my reservations too
Dave
Thanks for looking!
I know what you mean Dave. I thought about a more panoramic type of shot, but things were to chaotic to see up one properly. I may try it the next time I go back. There more trees to the left which might make things more evenly balanced. Thanks for letting me know. I guess there are always tradeoffs..
Patrick
Hello Patrick.
Nearly hurt my finger by scrolling down that much.lol
Superb picture again, lovely place, where i probbebly will never go to.
Ciao Jan
