I'm back from Maui with some new shots. We have had no rain at all in California (at least near San Francisco) since early March, so 10 days in Maui provided better skies than in the past 6 months here!
This black cobblestone beach near Hana, Maui is right next to what is locally called the Venus Pool. This is a really spectacular place with a pool right behind the beach. Most people photograph the pool, but the cobblestones were too much to resist! I did get a nice one of the pool which I may upload later. The black rocks reflect virtually no light for the camera unless they are wet and shiny. So I found a nice reflective spot and waited for the light on the rock and the cobblestones. Once that happened, I waited for a nicely formed wave to break.
1/5-second exposure @F10 with ND grads 0.9 + 0.75 (ISO 200. I usually use ISO 50 but wanted a shorter exposure)
Now, I think I'll go see what I've been missing.

Quote: We have had no rain at all in California since early March
Unbelievable!!
Good to see you back. I rather like those pebbles.
Cheers, Paul
Thanks for having a look. It is great to be back! 10 minutes after upload and off the front gallery page already. I guess things are busier now, right?
It is good to be back Boyd, I'll take your earlier advice.
Well Fran, I actually have not shot locally for a few months but still I only took 200 shots during the trip, of which maybe only 10 are decent EPZ worthy shots. But still it was fun.
Yes Paul, no rain for half a year and none expected until perhaps November? But there is often an early rain in September so we will see. Those pebbles nearly killed me!
Patrick
Welcome back Patrick, good to see your work again, I hope you are well.
Steve
Welcome back. nd what an image to to come back with. Beautiful.
Thanks for such a great welcome back!
LOL Jouko. Yes, I will have to go see all those Jetties including one that I see that Fran gave to you. As if you need more jetties! And what is this about a once per week award? I guess I've been away too long.
Thanks Steve. I am well, but I've been working a lot because my birth defects place may be split up so I'm trying to keep my options open. That is the main reason for ay EPZ absence besides the clear booooring skies.
Glad to be back Ange! I decided to get my head out of the sand and... oops sorry....
Patrick
Thanks, it's great to be back! And I'm glad you looked in here.
LOL Ron, I hope you are right.
Thanks Richard, that is an ankle-breaking forground too I might add.
Sure Jeanie, send it over! Or at least a few real clouds.....
Nice job Jouko, it looks like you have found all the great shots for me. Now I don't have to hunt through 10,000 pages of shots! Only one per week?
Patrick
Good to see you back on EPZ, looking forward to seeing some of the other shots from Maui.
Ant.
A great shot to return with, the wave and light on the pebbles are superb.
Darren.
Hey there stranger, thought you had deserted us ![]()
So good to see you back Patrick with clarity in your images that leaves me speechless !!...yes it's true ![]()
Beautiful drop of light here, sky's good,fg excellent...love those wet cobbles & the wave breaking just at the right moment..how considerate was that ?? ![]()
Lovely to see you uploading again Patrick , and with a stunning composition ... beautiful details of light through the clouds...!!!
Nikki !
Thanks for such a nice welcome! It means a lot.
This is definitely wet Alley. Send some my way if you can. It is no record dry spell yet but usually the rains last into April at least.
Thanks Janet! I wasn't sure until now if I should have uploaded this one first because it is not your usual sort of Hawaii shot. But the new side of the island is like this.
Yes Jennnnnn, it is a great place, though the dark lava is nearly impossible to photograph. It mostly turns out so black that you think the sensor must have large patches of bad pixels. I have some really ugly shots to prove it!
Thanks Peter, you should see the money transferred into your account any moment now!
I liked that part too Nikki. Thanks.
Patrick
The large version is stunning. There is so much to enjoy in this image - the rendition of the water, the variety of tones and colours in the sky, the light glancing off the dark rocks and the amazing clarity of the pebbles in the foreground.
Phil.
Thanks for having a look!
No Janet, I have those in a special hermetically sealed hard drive for special occasions!
You should see this place Phil... another planet....
lol Peter, no problem.
Patrick
Good to see you back Patrick and a worthy image to return with.Beautifully comp[osed and your trade mark seascapes which we have missed.
Tom.
Thanks for such a warm welcome! I missed you guys too.
I don't know how to live up to that Mike, but I'll try!
Yes, Martin, I've heard about the rain. Send soem this way if you can. There are similarities from what I've seen, though the lava is so jet black that they need to be wet to see them at all in the image! Yes, I'll upload more after I do some catching up. I
Patrick
Nice foreground rocks Patrick! You have captured the wave perfectly with a great exposure. In contrast, I think it's rained everyday here since March (well maybe I'm exaggerating but that's definitely how it seems at the mo)...at least we don't have a hurricane.
Charlotte
ps I go back to St Andrews in a few weeks to start my 5th (and final) year, thanks for asking ![]()
Gorgeous composition, colors, detail, and exposure Patrick. Good to see your work again.
Dennis
Thanks for stopping by!
Good luck Charlotte!
It is good to be back Paul and Dennis.
Patrick
Wecome back, Patrick. This is a great image full of detail in the pebbles in the foreground and a well chosen shutter speed to freeze the waves.
Ted
PS I know where all your rain has gone. We have got it over here we have just had the wetest August on record and the dullest ne to boot. You can have it back now as we are getting a bit bored with it!

I like your pov Patrick, the exposure for the water, the turn of the wave, the sheen on the pebbles, but most of all - the light catching those rocks! Been waiting a long time for one of your images - does not dissapoint
Great to see you posting again!
Sarah x
Thanks for stopping by!
LOL Ted, I was wondering where it went! Send it back here when you are finished...
I'll try Gil.
Thanks Sarah!
Patrick
Hi stranger.. Welcome back!!! see that everyone was waiting for you to get back with all the C+C's and Award... Congrats on the award.. This is yet again an Outstanding capture !!!!! Your work is always a pleasure to see Patrick...
Nice shot indeed. Fast shutter speed to freeze the water is a welcome change. Which always means the fg is nice and sharp, and nice light on the rocks to finish.
And Hawaii, lucky jigger!
Welcome to EPZ Patrick. Great first upload - I hope you stick around ![]()
Fantastic sky, and I love the exposure on the water - the colours, the timing on the wave and sense of 'wetness' that transfers very well in the photo
No rain in California eh? You should have come over here - it has hardly stopped raining here. (plus we have better cobblestones!)
Awesome, Patrick.
Welcome back - I'm sure I'm not the only one who's been eagerly awaiting your return.
This is a beautifully controlled shot; the sky is magnificent, as is your timing of the wave.
All the best,
Bill
Thanks for the welcome back! The lava shots are really difficult because most areas turn out completely black if you are not careful.
I was lucky Graham, for 10 days at least.
Thanks Matt, it seems like a decent site so I may stick around!
Patrick
Ill jump on the band wagon, welcome back, and you can have all the rain weve this summer up here in New England, remember San Fran ffrom the 60,s service time spent at Camp Davis, in Davis Calif, great pictures of Hawaii, Chuck
Yes, no rain in 6 months with none expected until late October, though sometimes a surprise bit falls in September!
I was excited to see all these clouds so I stayed on the wet side of the island. On the flight over, I could see the thin California coastal fog gradually give way to more tropical wetter looking clouds as I approached the islands.
Patrick
A stunning beachscape Patrick, just what we've come to expect from a man of your calibre. I can scarcely believe you haven't had any rain in six months, all it has done this summer is tip it down! We've had the least amount of sun this summer since records began, and it's been day after day of leaden skies and rain!
Nice to see you back Patrick with another little jewel! I like the shine on the fg pebbles, and the incoming waves are beautiful. So fresh...
Johanna
Thanks for not forgetting me!
You stole our rain Glos! Well, we rarely get rain during the summer but you stole our March and April rain, which is supposed to last us until November!
Thanks Phil, I'll have to quote you when I become rich and famous...lol...
Nigel, you don't sound happy about the weather. Call it ESP...lol...
Patrick
Stunning light. Not at all surprised to find it was one of yours, welcome back.
Jean
Great shot Patrick, the light is spot on as always. Its also good to see how you actually make the shot up, gives us green horns a look in. Looking forward to more.
Mark
Thanks for your views on this one. I nearly killed myself on those cobbles...er I mean chuckies!
LOL Georg..
Patrick
Welcome back! Great to see you uploading your wonderful images again. You certainly haven't lost your touch in your absence. I love the light catching the lovely cloud formations, the glistening rocks in the foreground and your perfect timing with that crashing wave. Fantastic as usual!
Valerie
Takes a while to get down here ![]()
Compositionally strong and nice complimentary tones topped of by a great sky.
Inspirational work.
Paul
Thanks for not forgetting me!
I'm still busy but I thought I better upload one before I'm totally forgotten!
Patrick
I have been wondering where you had got to! Glad to see you back Patrick. ![]()
Thanks Lesley.
And for whoever sees this because it is linked in the EPZ newsletter, I'll be back! I wish I could be around more but my daytime access is virtually nil right now. I may try uploading during the weekend.
Patrick
