This is my last upload of this year. I just want to thank everyone for teaching me so much about photography. I can't believe how much I've learned in such a short time.
This image was taken about 20 minutes after my last upload 'Under the pier.' Those 20 minutes were spent mostly waiting around for the rain to stop and for the sun to get high enough to illuminate the mountians and sheets of rain across the bay. I was lucky, because about 10 minutes after this was taken the skies cleared and the light was too harsh.
The Hanalei pier points directly towards the mountians often referred to as 'Bali Hai.', named after a song (by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II) from the musical South Pacific (1949 on Broadway, 1958 as a movie). This area resembles the island Tioman, which is the original Bali Hai.
25 second exposure @F20 with ND grads 0.9 + 0.6

All the best for the new year.
Mark.
And what a way to end 2006 with Patrick.
Really good lead-in lines with the pier, gorgeous light & colours in the sky.
Really like the effect the long exposure has had on the water.
Very nice indeed.

Chris.
Paddie, whenever I look at your images I am greatly inspired-- I think-- How can I transfer this fantastic technique to what I do-- --smooth , magical colors, perfect composition-- and the light-- always waiting for the perfect light! This last, I think- the most important aspect of what I have learned from you--

Thanks for looking! And I'll be catching up this week.
Alex, have a great holiday too.
Yes Jouko, it makes perfect sense. We have made lots of good friends on EPZ. I will have to visit someday!
You're welcome Jeanie. I'll take a few shots for you while I'm in LA!
LOL Chris Plumbe!
LOL too Janet. This was almost the least dangerous shot I took. But I'll do better to live up to this reputation next year.
Patrick
This is a Patrick Smith!!!
Knew the quality from the thumbnail.
What I love in this especially is the dramatic clouds right at the back creating such a lovely backdrop for the patches of light.
So when are you coming to Scotland for some real scenery??? ![]()
Scotty
I like the light and colours in this, Patrick. The comp looks a tad one sided to me, but a very beautiful location. You're lucky to have been there.
Have a great Christmas ![]()
Paul..
I just love your treatment of shots Patrick, there's no mistaking your style. Have a very Happy Christmas, look forward to seeing more in the New Year.
Malcolm
Thanks Phil and James
LOL Scotty. It seems like winter is a great time to go for those frosty scenes but it sure looks cold! I'll ahve to think about that one...
You have a good one too Paul. I wanted to include the tip of the penninsula in this one and I didn't want the pier to dominate too much, but rather to point to the light. I do have one from the other side that may address your point. Tradeoffs, tradeoffs.. You may be forcing me to put that other one up!
Malcolm, time to mix it up then!
Patrick
Another splendid shot of the pier Patrick, for something that is obviously a purely functional construction you have made it come alive both underneath and on top!
Look forward to next years uploads. (I'm hoping to have at least one sharp photo in my PF by then!)
All the best Darren
Wonderful sight Patrick, especially that little piece of blue sky opening up in the distance. Have a happy holiday and new year.
Yup, a stunner to finish of a great year for you on EPZ Patrick. Been a pleasure to look at your shots and marvel in their beauty.
I hope you have a great time over the festives season.

Superb image - the light in this is fantastic and this is primarily down to your vision and patience with your camera. Well done.
Beautiful image Patrick, that silky water looks so good, great composition, impressive work, Adrian
the water is just superb on this, another incredible shot.
CLIX
not bad at all Patrick it's got a good mood about it and light
Thanks for looking!
Yes Darren, under the right circumstances, even a classic composition like this can look great.
Angela I like that bit of sky too.
And the best to you too Paul.
Ann, I wish you a great 2007 as well.
Nick, that is one of many things I've learned on EPZ...patience.
Kim, it is the reult of the inspiration I've had on EPZ. It is a sappy thing to say but it is true.
LOL Kin, thanks!
Patrick
beasutiful image patrick

Ken

Yes Arnie, I have lots more lined up.
I'm honoured Bruce!
LOL - Tony, I wish it was easy! Well thsi one was easier than most once it stopped raining.
No problem Dave. LOL - The pier idea worked great. I'm not sure about the one where I would climb into the blowhole though!
Patrick
Patrick your work is fantastic and you fill me full of inspiration!
A truely magnificant portfolio you have, Well done.
Have a magical xmas and a happy new year, Catch up with you next year.
Oh, i almost forgot, great shot, the mountains and the sky look fab!
Rebecca. click*
a beutiful place, this and your last upload are crackers. really enjoyed looking at your work this year. hope to see more next year.
Beautiful image Patrick, agree that it has your style writen all over it. I also like the fact that you have used 5 stops of grad. People have said that this is overgradding but I share your love of the dramatic sky that this brings out. Thanks for this years uploads, they have been really enjoyable.
Dave
A fine way to sign off till next year Patrick. May 2007 prove to be just as successful for you!
Mike
And you teach us very much, pity that we learns so slow(at least I)
Peter
Bit of a goodie to end on Patrick. Only discovered your shots this year and they are inspirational. Keep us inspired in the New Year too.
All the best.
MArtin
Superb light with a beautiful sky.
I think the touch of sun on the hillside really does it for me!
Simon
Wonderful Patrick as ususal. Love the smoothness on the water and of course the light at the end of the pier... helen
Well that the ton up
.
well it seemed a shame to leave it on 99, lol.
Superb piece of work Patrick :0.
Chris.
Masterpiece from a master craftsman, one of your best I feel, have a jolly holly,
Ian.
Thanks for looking in and for the kind holiday wishes! I'll try to bring back some good shots from my visit to SoCal. Probably a bunch of 'under the pier' shots that I have planned but we will see.
Rebecca, you have a great holiday time too!
Dave, yes 5 stops were necessary. I tried 3 and 4 but it was not enough. The bright cloud would get burned out.
LOL Simon (poltavia), Viagra? Well, if it would sell as well, I'd be very happy.
I hope you are right Mike!
Peter, you've shown me a lot of things this year too you know.
All the best to you too Martin.
Yes, Simon, this one does look a little like some of your images with that awesome light on the hills. I looked for a red stripe but saw nothing like it.
LOL Chris!
Thanks Ian, I'll give it my best!
Patrick
Great work as always! May you and your family have a happy christmas and a click & HC filled new year.
Ted
Stunning Patrick, really stunning. Have a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year.
Thankyou for your kind comments.
Trish x
I envy you your trip but appreciate the time and consideration you have taken with each shot while there. You have shown us some extrodinary camera skills and given us such pleasure in your presentations. I wish you and you loves ones a very Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the New Year! Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
great lighting on the hillside Pat, pity there wasn't some object on the beach you could have used for the foreground though.
Thanks for looking!
Ted, I wish you a happy Christmas too. I'll hope for the HC's too!
Trish have a happy Christmas too. The kind comments also help me to learn as well, as you have lots of great ideas.
Greg, you and Cesie and family have a very merry Christmas. Feel free to ask about landscapes any time!
LOL Terry, I thought of that one too. But I took it on the other side because there was a log there.
Patrick
you should have dragged that log into position here Pat as the lighting and conrast in this shot is better, then you'd have had everything...lol
this is a very nice image as is though.
True Terry, but I think if I had dragged the log over, it might have looked too contrived. This is a 3 mile long stretch of sand with hardly anything but sand all the say around the bay. I was lucky to have a log on the other side. And I didn't want to distract from the light on the mountian and under the pier. It might have been too busy with the log. But who knows!
Thanks Carol!
Patrick
Lovely scene, the clouds and the lighting are spot on!
Sean
Hi Patrick
Its all top class work keep um coming cant wait for the next one.
Merry christmas and a Happy new year
Steve
So peacefull, yet such a brooding sky..another superb shot there Patrick..rgs, Rob.
Thanks for your comments!
I have a bunch more lined up Steve.
Rob, In Hawaii, even though the sky threatens to rain every day, it is actually a welcome relief and not a bother at all. Maybe that is what you are picking up.
Patrick
Beautifully composed Patrick with the pier being a grand focal point...the colours in the sky reflected on the water add an appealing facet to your image...a merry christmas and all the best for 2007.
Doug.
Well done Patrick have a great new year have a good drink and rest, wear a life jacket with the drink, thanks for your comments on my pictures it helps.
Doug This looks super
Last upload of the year - gives the rest of us mortals a chance to get a look in! Lol
Some of us will when we get the pc at home sorted
What time of the morning did you get up for this one?
Steve
So there was light at the end of the tunnel then Patrick. Simply superb.
Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
Brian.
Marvellous composition Patrick ... such natural beauty captured in this exquisite image, really is excellent technically.
Merry Christmas to you and your dear ones.
All the best,
Joe
lovely calm image Patrick, have a good xmas and a happy new year. x
Gorgeous.!
Sure a picture to end the year with Patrick. Really a Beautiful landscape 'painting'.
It sure will do perfect as a print on canvan or linnen in large format on a wall.
Have an excellent end of the year, Patrick.
All the best wishes to you.
Jan
An exceptional image Patrick, have a very Merry chritmas and best wishes for 2007, Ed
Wonderful composition, lighting, colours, tones and use of shutter speed, fantastic work here Patrick.
Mo.
I'm late again Patrick (I blame the kitchen floor!). I like the composition, the light on the slope in the background, and wonderful sky. The movement in the sky adds drama to the shot, but I'm suprised at how little movement there was in 25 seconds. Thanks for your support over the year Patrick, and best wishes to you and your wife for Christmas and the New Year.
Nigel
I can't blame the kitchen floor Patrick
but I would like to add my congrat's to yet another beautiful image! Thanks for your support of my work during 2006, your work is truelly inspirational - have a great Christmas and New Year!
Best wishes - Sarah ![]()

LOL - Douglas (wyatturp), I'll try!

Have a happy Christmas too Joe.
You too Maddie. I hope to see lots more great stuff in the new year.
Thanks Jan, I may try that.
You too Ed.
Sorry about the floor Nigel - LOL. As far as the cloud movement, it was mostly moving directly away fromthe camera so there was little sideways movement.
Thank you Sarah. You ahve have a great Christmas and I hope to see lots more next year.
Happy holidays to you too Gill. If you make it out this way, I'll point you to all the good spots.
Merry xMas to you too Dan.
Thanks Simon.
Patrick

Patrick

A stunning shot. The long exposure really softens the water and the lighting and composure are excellent. Cracking shot.
Chris
Love the silky look to the water in this and the sky looks beautiful too......fantastic work.
Ali
Happy to make this 200! Just a wonderful scene. Great picture.
Chris
Thanks for looking!
I had a great Christmas in good part because of everyone at EPZ who has made photography so enjoyable!
Patrick
Another superb piece of work Patrick. The light and composition are just fantastic.
Phil
Where is Patrick hiding out these days.....?
This is an exceptional shot, P....Almost as good as some of those superb English-lit-hill shots that get soooooooo much attention, guess your going to have to work a little bit harder for that award....hee hee!
Sorry, I couldn't help myself, but, hey-it's 1:37am and I am trying to get back into my all-night stay up mode to start working again soon and it's not easy.....![]()
Just a little bit giddy tonite if you haven't noticed.
Really, I just Luv taking up all this empty space on your picture shots, especially since you don't get as many comments during the middle of the night....I am only number 2003 or something like that...![]()
Merry Belated Christmas and Happy New Year....
Have a Wonderful Sunday.......![]()
Guess who......![]()
Ooops, almost forgot, you won the 'Megamuffy Award' for this finely lit shot....![]()
Thanks Phil.
As to the next commenter. I'm not quite sure that I can guess who it is? LOL - You have left so few hints that I have nothing to go on!
Thanks for the nice wishes whoever you are! I hope you had a great Christmas time in whatever country you are from. I'm updating my website today because I'm giving a talk this week on photography for a camera club of about 50 people. I'll be using my website to give the talk.
Later,
Patrick
You have been the one who has taught up so much!! A true inspiration, your work never fails to astound me. I would sell my soul to the devil to have just a pinch of your talent Patrick. Jaw droppingly beautiful image as always.
Hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas and New Year, here's wishing you the very best for 2007.
Tracy
I'm honoured Tracy! I had a great Christmas and thanks for your wishes. They mean a lot! And you have plenty of talent, so the devil would be getting a good deal!
It was amazing to be there Anne.
Patrick
What can I say but Perfection I stared at this image for a few minutes, it has so much to offer, well done
Joe
I've clicked this because of the light - which is wonderful - but it's a bit lopsided for me... As there's so much to look at on the left hand side and so much space on the right, I find it a little unbalanced...
