Some people wanted to see what my earlier upload 'Exposed', really looked like. This was taken about 15 minutes before Exposed, and is for everyone who is nautically lactose intolerant!
While they were both taken at the same spot, (on an island north of Cancun, Mexico) they turned out quite differently. The waves were so small, it was like being by a lake. I had to wait several minutes for even a small wave to hit the old pier.
A hurricane last October (category 5, direct hit, 220mph gusts) had exposed this pier. The beach used to extend well past the end of the exposed pier. The sand is about 5-10 feet lower than before.
0.2 second exposure @F11 with ND grad 0.9 + 0.6 I had to slightly desaturate the middle part of the sky to get back the detail.

Hello Patrick. The water looks so inviting.Great lead in and wonderful sky.Excellent.
~Alley~
Another wonderful shot Patrick, love the sunlight rays, excellent timing and colours, great composition a wonderful image.
Mo.
I like the way the pier seems to split the water near the beach. Great shot as usual Patrick.
Martin
Just knew this was yours as soon as I saw the thumbnail... a superb capture.
Jeanie
"Milky Way Moses".....................
This IS it! ; )
One of my favs from 70ies ; )
Jouko
Patrick it's great, I would say I prefer this one to the others and thats saying something :o)
Angie x
Wow Patrick! Two completely different but equally stunning images.
I do love the way that the sun's rays compliment the lines of the old jetty in this image, radiating as they do from the centre of the frame. The finishing touch is the perfectly timed capture of the small breaking waves.
Mike
This must have been such a memorable eveing for you!
Now all you need to do is put that sky with the milky water-------joking,both class shots on there own merits.
A record of the day! 30 minutes or so!
Took six hours here! LOL.................
Now you solve my riddle! ; )
"The Milky Way Moses" thingy............????????
Jouko
One heck of a sky, Patrick - I love its metallic qualities. But the real joy for me is the unusual and really appealing colour of the water and its movement on either side of the posts.
Very nice Patrick!!
colours, light what more could ya want!!
Dave
Thanks for your comments!
Angie (beanibabe), then this one is for you!
Sorry Teresa, this is my front yard, not my garden - LOL... Tradewinds was taken from my back garden.
Yes Mike, it was a great evening and I'm glad I had my camera so I can remember it forever.
Be careful what you ask for Kim!!
Jouko, is it this?
Patrick
Thanks JeremyCC, that is why I took many versions. I never know what people will like.
LOL Jouko - EPZ? What's that?
Oh, EPZ is what you use in order to find things to look up in Google! Right?
Patrick
That sky...wow, it's looks so inviting. An amazing place to be I'm sure. Well done.
Helen.
Very nice Patrick, I particularly like the sun rays bursting through...
Chris
Love that little wave Patrick. Looking at your pf picture I have to say you are starting to look your age, if you dont mind me saying ![]()
Dave
Hi Patrick.
Beautiful picture to look at, and thanks for the description.
Jan
Superb image and I like it as much as the previous version. Bulls-eye on the setting sun.
Antonio
Over 50 before I even get here!
Lovely capture Patrick - the way you lead the viewer towards the sun is spot on.
Debbie
Lovely work Patrick, super shapes in the water against the remains of the pier, which makes a superb lead in.
Janet
I am in awe...I am not worthy LOL.
Super work Patrick, I like this...a lot.
Gwyn
Two very different pictures, Patrick. Both are stunning. -=Walter
Another perfectly executed shot Patrick.
That awesome sky makes this for me.
--Den--
Patrick
thank you very much, you are wonderful ![]()
Angie x blows a kiss
Thanks for looking!
LOL Dave, yes the scales give it away, don't they? Time for a facial I think.
Gwyn, sure you are!
Thanks Angie (another one fooled - lol!)
Patrick
Hi Patrick, love the timing, movement, mood, atmosphere and it has to be yours.Take care.Ann
Knew it was one of yours straight away. A very good photo in itself and well deserving of a vote but, for me it lacks that magical look that "exposed" has.
Great light Patrick, superb lead in, terrific colours and detail
Malcolm
Excellent comp, I feel as if I am being launched right into the skyline, your work never ceases to amaze me, hats off to you! Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
Brilliant image Patrick, like the lead in, colour and comp spot on as usual.
Mick
Beautiful image Patrick, I particulary like the angular patterns created by the waves and the sun rays you have captured.
MikeA.
A marvellous image, love the composition, colours and light
For me Patrick, this is an excellent photograph, whereas "exposed" is more akin to a work of art. I am not going to express a preference, as I like them both for different reasons. I love your:

Nigel
Thanks for looking!
Steven (u47sb2), Thanks for the input. This is why I did several versions.
Yes Mike, I like the rays too. I don't get much of a chance in California to capture something like that.
Thanks Nigel, I had to think of a different way to put it. I know what you mean about art vs. photograph. Sometimes lately I look at a scene and just want to make it into a feeling rather than a photograph. I have a few of these planned for the next couple of months when the rains return.
Patrick
It's very pretty indeed and worth one of those click things...I'll not get sucked into raving about it you understand as I only rave about original work...
.....i'm much harder headed than that.

I love the original incarnation of this image and this too is a stunner. It's not quite as good as the original IMHO as I feel the tranquilty of the extra long exposure of the original really suited the compositon and subject matter. However the sky has fantastic drama and colours in this one, a very close call!!
Ben
Thanks for looking!
True Keith, this has been done before. And you'll need that hard head for all those landscapes you'll be reviewing!
Yes Ben, I know what you mean. That is why I uploaded the long exposures first. But some like the lively water, so here it is. It always pays to get more than one version. I actually have about 4 other ones that I could upload. Each is different.
Patrick
Yup, it's all been said above. Fabulous capture Patrick, perfect exposure, great - strong composition and a fab sky to boot. Lovely work as usual.
Paul
Patrick simply stunning and beautiful detail through out! Patrick a very inviting scene!
stay well
tonymarq
It's astonishing how light etc changes over such a short time span. Fine colour throughout here. Nick.
You're the king when it comes to sea exposures Patrick, I love this, beautiful colours and composition.
. . . bit late getting to this one Patrick . . but really glad I did . . top shot . . the quality of the light hitting the water and the perfect positioning . . . just magic!
Mike.W
I think I prefer this one Patrick.Every element in the pic seems to be heading to one point on the horizon.Excellent.
PS. Last night when ePz crashed I went and had a good look at your website. Easy to manouever, well laid out, great idea to put methods in, liked it a lot.
Brian.
i've got to be honest here pat and say i like the other version, the smoothness just makes it feel so surreal, although i think the sky and reflections in the ocean are better here.
how did you use the 2 filters Pat? both on the sky or one for the sky and one for the foreground?
It's all been said above but this is a very beautiful image Patrick, excellent work!

Thanks for your comments!
Nick (VintageRed), yes it is amazing how much things can change in just a few minutes. And how different a photo can look with just a few adjustments.
Brian, thanks for checking it out. I've seen these photographer websites that are all flash and no content. I just wanted something simple but good looking where people can see my photos. I set up the database first. Then I wrote the HTML and PHP code in in a text editor and uploaded it to the site.
Terry, I used them both on the sky. it was really bright in comparison to the ocean and I wanted detail in both places. A few minutes later, the ocean was picking up more light. It changes really quickly. There are times where I'll invert one ND grad if the beach and sky are bright but the middle areas are darker. And yes, I decided to do different versions just for the reasons you mentioned.
Patrick
Having missed it had to go back to see what "Exposed" was like. Having done so, I much prefer this for just about everything, sea, sky, actuality. With 'Exposed' was wondering about an ice field in Mexico, until I saw the 30 sec. exposure. You certainly plan things and I admire your dedication. A lesson for all of us there.
Jim
Hi Patrick, this is like a window with a road I could walk along. Very atmospheric and really, really beautiful. helen
Thanks for your comments!
Jim, I know what you mean. I learned that it is good to get many versions of the same scene when I happen to be in the right place at the right time. You gave the exact reason. It either hits you or it doesn't. I must admit that I came here 4 times in one short week!
Thanks Helen. You could actually walk quite a ways out past the pier and only be waist deep in water.
Patrick
Love this image Patrick, in fact I am on holidays in Mexico at present, and the earlier image you posted of the Island just off Cancun of the pier, they have sand bagged up all the wooden strats coming out of the water, making it much less pleasing to the eye than when you captured it. Double drat! Still a lovely island though.
Hi Simon, I guess I got there just in time! Sorry to hear that it was sandbagged. I did have to move one out of the way to take these shots. The mornings looking east offer the best opportunities. I have other ones that I havn't posted that are as good as the ones I have posted! I look forward to seeing what you get!
Patrick
a very well thought out and captured composition Patrick - the detail and light are superb
Sun, sea and fine white sand...Paradise! Perfectly captured Patrick ☼☼☼☼☼
Rob
Another cracker, beautiful colours, great composition. I can almost believe I'm there with the waves lapping around my feet.
Richard
Amazing difference between the shots Patrick. This obvously gives off a much more naturalistic feel, whereas the others are more surreal in effect.
Both are superb shots in their own right, and no doubt appeal to different people in different ways.
Regards
Martin
Thank you for looking!
Richard, it was difficult to take pictures when it was so perfect there.
You're right Martin, that is why it is always good to take several versions when you manage to be in the right place at the right time.
Patrick
Lovely light and colours Patrick...the old jetty stakes feature well. Have a good weekend.
Doug.
Yes Patrick I am inclined to store and forget, its not until I see Louis's shot I say I must have a similar one, somewhere!!!
one day.....just one day i will take an image like this, i have the kit so in the end... i will!! its people like you who inspire me..!!
chris
A stunning shot. great colours and the composition is excellent.
chris
Hi Patrick! Bit late getting to this one, so everything's been said, but I will add that I prefer this one - must be lactose intolerant...(LOL) Cheers for your recent comments!
Simply stunning Patrick. Love the way you direct attention to the sun. The colours are wonderful, especially that milky blue sea
Hawk
I am not suprised this has got such a major reaction, Patrick. Jawdropping stuff especially viewed large.
Thanks for your comments!
LOL Cathy. That is why it is good to get more than one version!
CB, I wasn't sure but I had to find out!
Patrick
Hi Patrick,
I think this may be off-centered a little bit to the center???
LOL!
Just thought I'd write something a little bit different from all the other comments....And I was saving this comment just for today, I didn't miss it, so no excuses here.....![]()
Anyways, just how do you get these perfect shots anyways......This is actually way too perfect, but next time, just try and center it a little better, k?
Another winner!
Have a Peachy Day,
Suze ![]()
Thanks Dan and Tony!
(snickering.,.)
I'm not sure why there is so much empty space between your messages. It must be a bug in the EPZ software. Oh well!
Patrick
Sheesh Patrick... I thought if I left ephotozine for a while, your photos would start just deteriorating in their greatness and I'd come back and find you'd be taking shots like me!!
A girl only has so much breath to be taken away!! ~ CA
Thanks for looking!
I was wondering where you went Carol Ann, but I did see you mentioning me on that website.... I'm honoured.. Yes, I know things.. - LOL!
Patrick
I think it has all been said. This reminds me of my last trip to Mexico. Must go again soon...
Thomas.
Wow! Has a real ethereal feel to it. Just heavenly. Stunning shot, wonderful light, muted colour and composition.
Tracy
