Point Lobos state park, at the north end of Big Sur just south of Carmel California could keep a photographer busy for months or even years. It is a penninsula that has been sculptured by large Pacific waves over millions of years and the results are stunning. This rock is probably 50 feet tall at high tide.
Details: 0.6 second exposure @F22 with ND grads 0.9 + 0.9
My usual 1/4 second exposure didn't paint the movement of the water quite enough so I had to go longer to show every detail.
I've missed everyone at EPZ while I've been working on my now completed probabilistic SQL data linkage program. I'm still really busy, but perhaps I can upload one per week and browse the the galleries.

Hi Patrick, nice to see a shot from Cornifornia at long last! Superb exposure to capture the rough waves and amazing detail!
Charlotte
Thanks for your comments. It's great to be back. It is a little overwhelming realizing that there are probably 100,000 uploads that I've missed!
Mike, what restrictions do you have at work?
LOL Charlotte. Ever since you mentioned that term to me, I think it all the time. Even taking this shot, I was thinking 'Cornifornia!'
Patrick
Welcome back Patrick, nice to see your work again and what a cracker it is too
CLIX![]()
Back with a bang, good to see your work again, it was the main reason I upgraded to the 5D.
Quality to aspire to.
Steve

Thsi is an amazing shot. I don't usually like stuff like this but the water is amazing.

Steve, Great avater! And the 5D is still awesome.
LOL Jouko, I see that a few interestnig things have happened while I was out! Not so boooooring???
Patrick
Needless to say spectacular as always Patrick, that water movement is nothing short of spectacular. Welcome back, you were sorely missed!
By sheer coincidence I was looking at your profile and website this morning and up popped a new image by you! Glad to see it!!
Dan
Good to see you back Patrick!
Love how you have caught the movement in the waves and superb detail in the rocks - quality photography.
Mark.
THE MAN IS BACK!!!!!
And he's back with a cracker. The water movement and rock details are out of this world.

Ditto the remarks above Patrick. Good to see you back, and a heck of a shot to announce your return!!.

LOL Jouko... um... well......
That is an amazing coincidence Dan. Maybe you picked up vibrations fron the ether somehow...
LOL, thanks Ian. I'm not sure I can live up to that but I'll try!
Pleased to be back Sarah!

Patrick
Alright for a beginner i suppose,we all have to start at some level
Lol
Talk about returning in style. Wonderful wave action and perfectly exposed.

Good to see you back, with your usual high standard of shot. Gorgeous lighting and the waves timed to perfection. Brilliant!! ![]()
Great to see you back Patrick. Nothing lost in the quality of the work whilst you have been away-- this is awesome.

Lisa
This is so good it hurts! the clarity of detail is excellent and on top of that the scene has beautiful drama, welcome back Patrick, Adrian
Welcome back with a signature Smith upload!!
Had to be yours Patrick. Glad to make it 60 ![]()
Phil.
Thanks for your comments! I've missed you too.
LOL Kim. funny you should mention that because I'm trying to get my work into a very fancy gallery and the owner wanted to know how long I'd been doing photography and what my education was. What should I say? "Uh... well I have no photographic education but I've uploaded shots to EPZ for 2 years." Funny thing is, I've had more critique and education here on EPZ than I could have obtained from 10 years of school and normal experience. So, I never tell anybody about myself until after they see the shots! I'm in by the way.
LOL Adrian, well I hope to deliver more punishing blows in the future!
Patrick
I agree.....what a cracker!
Just love that waters movement.
~Alley~
Thats a bit good Patrick.Love the water and colours in this.Good to see your still about.

Nice combination of movement and rock.
And welcome back, sir
![]()
Paul..
Very nice to see you back Patrick, with this wonderful image and the detail in the rocks is fantastic and love the water movement.Superb.
Mo.
Stunning comeback, Patrick. ![]()
Do you have one grad upright and one inverted, or are they both the same way around?
Michael.
Thanks for looking!
LOL Andrew...just barely though..
One is angled from the lower left hand corner to the upper right, while the other is just touching the brightest bits in the upper left.
Fortunately I didn't have to hand hold it, as I was using my other hand to hold onto the cliff so I wouldn't fall in!
Patrick
i've never seen the ocean look so beautiful, i just love the water movement here, it looks like the sea in some of the old paintings i have seen with the old sailing ships, beautiful effect!
Hello Patrick so pleased to see you back in the fold.Lovely image to restart.
Love the tones and exposure.
Tom.
Nice to see you back Patrick, missed you posting. Nice one with some gorgeous wave action to start the ball rolling
)
Ange
Good to see you back Patrick and with a great image.
Kate
An outstanding image to herald your return, the water movement is excellent
hurray your back.
this is top draw quality and i hope to see more in the future again.
beatiful qulaity to the light, perfect colour in the water, just the right amount of motion.
Welcome back Patrick, I have missed your uploads. Wonderful detail in the rocks, and drama and movement in the water in this. I'm glad to hear you have completed your program and that you have an upcoming exhibition.
Nigel
Quite an extraordinary photo which got the most extrordinary response. JNC
The sea wraps the rocks , and the light plays well
Doug-----------Hope you are well Patrick, TAKE CARE
Thanks for your comments!
Funny you should mention that Terry. Just a couple of hours before I was in some of those fancy Carmel art galleries looking at million dollar paintings (literally!) and one grabbed me with a ship being tossed by waves with amazing light going through the scene. I wished I could capture that for real. I'm still wishing, but for now this will do!
It's good to be back amidst all the drama!
Patrick
I've still not got out and taken any photos.
This is a good 'un to come back with - nice blurring of the waves - enough to suggest movement, but not so much to turn it all to mush.
i hope not concerning the banning and this is a very fine shot
Beautiful shot with wonderful details on the rock formations and water movement looks Superb.
Yogendra
Thanks for looking!
LOL Ian, then I won't show you the 2 minute exposure I too after this! Supermush! But not cottony, just fine mist.
Kin? 'The banning??'
Patrick
Welcome back Patrick, love the fine detail in this wonderful shot
Mari
Wonderful comeback image Patrick. Almost looks like the waves are caressing the rocks.Super detail too.
Brian.
It's a long way down to this comments box! What an excellent picture this is. That powerful sea movement is captured so well.
David
Back with a great one Patrick, nice to see California again - stunning work.
An awful long way down this page for my tuppence-worth : stunning, plus all that has been said above!
Beverley
Thanks for welcoming me back. I have a lot of catching up to do. I bet there have been some awesome shots uploaded in the past few months!
Patrick
ya back ![]()
The shots a cracker to come back with Patrick ..
Dave
Nice to see you back Patrick. Lovely movement captured here - perfect shutter timing I'd say.
Hi Patrick - so good to have you back and with a stunning shot as always!
It has taken me almost as long as you have been away just to read these comments lol!
gill ![]()
I see Charlotte beat me with the 'Cornifornia' comment ![]()
Patrick, nice to see you back, your presence has been missed. As always an excellent shot, love the way the light dances on the waves and brings out the detail in the foam and spray. Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
Thanks for looking!
LOL Gil, yes, the young one was faster!
No problem Michael. I usually stagger the grads if I use two. Putting them right on top of each other only works with a flat horizon if there is enough contrast.
Patrick
Ahah...Dangerman..I was just talking about you a couple of days ago & up you pop.Nice to see you back Patrick I have missed the 'forums in your comments' ![]()
Your usual super detail & clarity, you have been missed!
janet xx

LOL Janet, there was a definite element of danger in this one too!
Cheers Pete,
Great to be back!
Patrick
You have been away far too long, but what a come back my friend, the water is fantastic and makes this image stand above all else. The rock will be there in another million or so years and where will mankind be, I wonder?
All the very best and keep them coming,
Dougie
The MAN is back!
The usual high standards, Patrick. Glad to see you didn't forget how to click!
Colin
Dougie, I do wonder about that. I hope that our descendants will be around.... toting their 1 million megapixel brain activated eye implant cameras!
LOL Colin...thanks.
Patrick

MikeA.
Great to have you back Patrick, we have missed your photo's, great water movement and textures in the rocks.
Dot
Thanks for looking in!
LOL Mike, although I live near the Oracle world headquarters, I mostly do MS SQL server... when I'm not climbing a slippery cliff to get a shot like this! I am going to do an Oracle version of my linkage program just to widen my market.
Patrick
Absolutely brilliant Patrick
Brian.......................................
Quality image Patrick, good to have you back again
Colin
welcome back Patrick. This one's a cracker (as are the other new ones I've just spotted on your website).
Try not to stay away so long next time ![]()
Mike
Thanks for looking! It's good to be back and it looks like I've missed some really great uploads. I'm way behind now...
I'll try Mike. It has been crazy the past few months. And no clouds around here anyway! Very poor, very stark and bright light.
Patrick
Good to see you back Pat.

Astounding as always. We are headed for the Oregon coast in a couple of weeks. This inspires.
bill
The day I ever find an image of yours just 'good' will be the day hell freezes over. And if that happened, you'd photograph it to perfection, I reckon ![]()
Andrew

Patrick

Thanks Suzan,
I'm still behind too. It was a good weekend. No clouds so no good shots but I did a very long night exposure with the moonlight that turned out well. I hope all is going well for you!
Patrick
Love the colour and the motion swirling around the rocks..
Very nice pat
Dave

chelseak
Another stunner Patrick and congratulations on the HC,
John
Nice wave movement! The composition is good too. Skilful use of grads - have to remember that ![]()
CHeers, Goggz
Fantasitc shot Patrick. The movement of the water around the base of rock is just so expressive and adds a lot of power to this shot. Perfectly judged shutter speed.
Ben
Thanks Goggz.
Ben, I'll admit that it took 3 attempts to get the shutter speed right before I could take my real shots. This was a big scene almost in slow motion compared to my other real close-in shots.
Patrick
Just superb, one of the best I've seen and the colour is to die for...
Tim
This is an absolute stunner. Why this didn't get an EC beats the hell out of me.
Pete
