Keough Beach, 25 miles north of San Francisco has numerous tidepools during a very low tide. And I saw for the first time in over 100 visits that it also has some nice flat sand that is perfect for reflecting the red cliffs at sunset. I never thought I'd ever see this beach looking this way! It is usually rough and full of very large waves.

This was taken one minute before the sun set and I needed strong ND grads to bring out the detail in the sand. I only got one other shot like this, as the the waves in the distance were at this spot just minutes before and after I took the shot, and the sun was gone just a minute later.

Details: 0.4 second exposure @F14 with ND grads 0.9 + 0.6

ooooo, the perfect reflection!
I can see it now as you got to take the photo:

Patrick says, "mirror mirror
on the lake
who is the Grand Poobahh
of photos to take?"

Lake replies, "Oh seeker of knowledge,
That would be you,
oh, might photo warrior,
oh, Mr EPZ Foo !"

LOL!!!!!!!!!
Have a great one!

The delicate sand ridges visible beneath the surface are wonderful, as is the overall clarity. This really does need to be viewed large to fully appreciate it's finer qualities.

Hey Patrick,

You don't know it yet, but you totally Lucked out and got my tired, goofy comment of the day....LOL!!!

Did someone say, "Quiet"???

Smile

As far as a more Handsome shot.......Ummmmm,
I think you should've waited about 1 minute point 3/10's of a second longer, then you may have gotten a wider range of colours on the reflected lake and maybe a tad of that really nice English evening lit hillside effect on your red mountain that Pete Loves so much...Smile
Other than that, mine is just a teensy bit prettier.....Smile

LOL!!

I can definitely see you talking to the lake as Thomas suggested......That is TOO Funny!

Smile

And what's up with all the BayWatch Babe talk, I think all the EPZ girls would agree that you need some of the Foxy Lifeguards from the show, kinda like, 'Where's Waldo', have them hidden in the rocks.....Smile

In conclusion...And in all honesty....This is quite lovely, a perfect shot, with all the trimmings in between...Really do Luv the stillness of the water and the fact that the embossed markings of the sand are so apparent, like you can actually touch them, the best part being the distant mountains and rocks, they really make it nice....A+ for you!

Cheerios and have a great week!
As Always,
Suzan Smile

Thanks for looking! It's been a busy day.

LOL Suzan, I sure seem to 'luck out' a lot in the 'goofy comment' department! Yes, I guess the peaceful solitude of EPZ has now been broken. Talking to the lake does work you know. Actually I turned the ocean into a lake for about a 30 seconds. As far as the Baywatch thing goes, whenever Thomas sees a beach scene, he wants to know where the Baywatch babes are. I tell him that they are just behind those rocks (or something like that) just to keep up the whole California fantasy. You know...

Oh, and sorry to one-up you with my profile shot. Natural good looks just run in my family I guess! But don't feel bad about your pic, it still looks fine despite the lack of whiskers and a blubbery nose!

Thanks Jan, I did stand here for a long time looking at other shots I was missing and just hoping for this to happen. I lucked out!

I like the reflections of the cliffs in the water and the strong colours, the thing that really grabbed my attention though is the textures in the sand that can be quite clearly seen through the shallow water, imagine how this might have looked if there had been clouds in the sky...lol although then you probably wouldn't have seen the sand textures, still we are used to cloudless skies by now...lol

Things are looking up though, clouds and i am told storms are on there way Smile

PatrickSmith
7 Nov 2006 - 5:49 AM

Thanks for looking in. I'll should be able to write back in the next few days.

Thanks Susie, I wasn't out to get a shot like this at all. But when I saw the possibility, I waited and waited...

Yes, Terry. Maybe we will finally get some decent storms in here. We did get that teaser that cleared out before sunset and then some more fog. It is just a matter of time now. General rule of thumb; if you see a good shot, go out and get it because the shot you want may not happen! I missed one myself and ended up in dense fog without even a decent forest around for one of those foggy-forest shots.

Yes Suzeee, I am photogenic but don't let that intimidate you. I am just a regular person like everybody else..lol...

I had a great evening, I love putting up stucco on walls... great fun... Fortunately is it warm and dry.

That's okay Ann, I'm glad you looked at it.

Colin, I thought about that, but if I pointed up a bit, I would lose the details in the sand and gain nothing but more straight blue sky. Yes, the symmetry is not exact but in general, you are usually you are supposed to keep things away from being centered. Still, a more panoramic crop is an interesting idea.
