Keough Beach, 25 miles north of San Francisco has numerous tidepools during a very low tide. And I saw for the first time in over 100 visits that it also has some nice flat sand that is perfect for reflecting the red cliffs at sunset. I never thought I'd ever see this beach looking this way! It is usually rough and full of very large waves.
This was taken one minute before the sun set and I needed strong ND grads to bring out the detail in the sand. I only got one other shot like this, as the the waves in the distance were at this spot just minutes before and after I took the shot, and the sun was gone just a minute later.
Details: 0.4 second exposure @F14 with ND grads 0.9 + 0.6

julie
Serenity personified Patrick, such calm water and that stunning reflection, simple and beautiful, fine work, Adrian
crystal clear shot, Patrick...
Love those patterns in the bottom...
Jouko
ooooo, the perfect reflection!
I can see it now as you got to take the photo:
Patrick says, "mirror mirror
on the lake
who is the Grand Poobahh
of photos to take?"
Lake replies, "Oh seeker of knowledge,
That would be you,
oh, might photo warrior,
oh, Mr EPZ Foo !"
LOL!!!!!!!!!
Have a great one!
Thomas
Another great shot-stunning folio. My pikkie's not as scary as your bullseal profile!!
Terrific reflections Patrick, as Jouko says, love the sand ripple patterns through the water.
Paul
The delicate sand ridges visible beneath the surface are wonderful, as is the overall clarity. This really does need to be viewed large to fully appreciate it's finer qualities.
Mike
excellent reflections patrick and amazing detail in the large version.
marc.
Thanks for your comments!
LOL - Thomas. I'm glad you like this, despite the scarcity of Baywatch beach babes in this shot!
90125, Bullseal? Thats's me... My self-esteem has been permanently damaged!
Thanks Mike and Marc, the sand does nto show up well in the small version. It was really fine sand.
Yes Victor, this is a great place.
Patrick

Mo.

Magnificent reflections and capturing a superb mood.
Lovely image.
Tom.
Superb reflections Patrick, wonderful light and colour too, like the ripples in the sand - RC on me!

Perfect reflecion or should that be perfectionist reflection. It strikes me you know exactly what you are waiting for and are ideed prepared to wait for it. Good shot BTW.
Nick
Brilliantly timed to give that perfect reflection and beautfully composed too. Bruce
Thanks for your comments!
You could do it Babs!
Thanks Nick. I was waiting and waiting. I almost had this shot several times but there were too many waves washing over this spot despite the low tide. I thought that I would not get my chance but I lucked out just as the sun set!
Patrick
a marvellous reflection the large ver' really jumps out at you...so to speak.
Stunning light and reflections Patrick...looks like Cornifornia to me!
Charlotte
....she got there before me again!
Fabulous light and clarity Patrick!
gill
Thanks for looking!
It was like that Mike. At least for a few seconds.
LOL Gill, Charlotte know how to set her priorities!
Patrick
Great feeling of calm and a super reflection
Brian..............
Hey Patrick,
You don't know it yet, but you totally Lucked out and got my tired, goofy comment of the day....LOL!!!
Did someone say, "Quiet"???
![]()
As far as a more Handsome shot.......Ummmmm,
I think you should've waited about 1 minute point 3/10's of a second longer, then you may have gotten a wider range of colours on the reflected lake and maybe a tad of that really nice English evening lit hillside effect on your red mountain that Pete Loves so much...![]()
Other than that, mine is just a teensy bit prettier.....![]()
LOL!!
I can definitely see you talking to the lake as Thomas suggested......That is TOO Funny!
![]()
And what's up with all the BayWatch Babe talk, I think all the EPZ girls would agree that you need some of the Foxy Lifeguards from the show, kinda like, 'Where's Waldo', have them hidden in the rocks.....![]()
In conclusion...And in all honesty....This is quite lovely, a perfect shot, with all the trimmings in between...Really do Luv the stillness of the water and the fact that the embossed markings of the sand are so apparent, like you can actually touch them, the best part being the distant mountains and rocks, they really make it nice....A+ for you!
Cheerios and have a great week!
As Always,
Suzan ![]()

. . very good details as always . .even in the compressed version . . those warm colours? and the symetry? . . just spot on!
Mike.W
Superb shot Patrick. Reflections on sea water, whatever next?
Nigel
Quality photography Patrick, the light and colours are superb.
Rg Tony
cant fault the reflections Patrick, i like how you can see the sand ripples under the sea.
Wow, this is another hats off to you shot, excellent contrast and light, the reflection could not be anymore perfect, brilliant work Patrick! Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
Great reflection and good skills on the camera to keep the detail in the sand...
Top stuff yet again.. ![]()
Tony
A really calm and peaceful coastal scene Patrick, great lighting and composition and a superb symmetrical reflection
That you could capture such a smooth reflection in that area speaks volumes about your tecnical expertise and your amazing patience to get the shot the way you want it.
Regards,
Jan
Thanks for looking! It's been a busy day.
LOL Suzan, I sure seem to 'luck out' a lot in the 'goofy comment' department! Yes, I guess the peaceful solitude of EPZ has now been broken. Talking to the lake does work you know. Actually I turned the ocean into a lake for about a 30 seconds. As far as the Baywatch thing goes, whenever Thomas sees a beach scene, he wants to know where the Baywatch babes are. I tell him that they are just behind those rocks (or something like that) just to keep up the whole California fantasy. You know...
Oh, and sorry to one-up you with my profile shot. Natural good looks just run in my family I guess! But don't feel bad about your pic, it still looks fine despite the lack of whiskers and a blubbery nose!
Thanks Jan, I did stand here for a long time looking at other shots I was missing and just hoping for this to happen. I lucked out!
Patrick
This is very minimalist for you, Patrick?! lol Lovely in its simplicity; gorgeous reflection, pleasing foreground detail, and of course your trademark quality - like the way the diagonal composition leads the eye to the distant cliffs too ...
Susie :o)
I like the reflections of the cliffs in the water and the strong colours, the thing that really grabbed my attention though is the textures in the sand that can be quite clearly seen through the shallow water, imagine how this might have looked if there had been clouds in the sky...lol although then you probably wouldn't have seen the sand textures, still we are used to cloudless skies by now...lol
Things are looking up though, clouds and i am told storms are on there way ![]()
Quote: I did stand here for a long time looking at other shots I was missing and just hoping for this to happen.
i did that on my way to McClure beach on Sunday, fantastic light on the landscape at point reyes, but i turned a blind eye as i wanted to get to the beach, not so sure i did the right thing now....oh well!
Hey,
I am in total agreeance on the cute mug shot....Luv that smile...LOL!
In reference to the Ocean/Lake comment....It just looked too peaceful to be the ocean, so I turned it into a lake all by myself....![]()
Have a good evening,
Suze ![]()
Thanks for looking in. I'll should be able to write back in the next few days.
Thanks Susie, I wasn't out to get a shot like this at all. But when I saw the possibility, I waited and waited...
Yes, Terry. Maybe we will finally get some decent storms in here. We did get that teaser that cleared out before sunset and then some more fog. It is just a matter of time now. General rule of thumb; if you see a good shot, go out and get it because the shot you want may not happen! I missed one myself and ended up in dense fog without even a decent forest around for one of those foggy-forest shots.
Yes Suzeee, I am photogenic but don't let that intimidate you. I am just a regular person like everybody else..lol...
I had a great evening, I love putting up stucco on walls... great fun... Fortunately is it warm and dry.
Patrick
Patience & clarity Patrick, that's all I can find to say...everyone has said everything else!!
Lovely work!
Janet
Lovely peaceful shot, great colours and reflections, great capture!
Scott
Very simple looking photo but well executed and it works. Needs the large version to bring out the detail in the sand under the water. Nik
There's nothing to add - in reflection, this is perfect(tion) Jim
P.S. As usual, the large version is mind-boggling!
Just sublime - for some reason it reminds of the free postcard that came with the Wish You Were Here Pink Floyd album.
Martin
Glad to make it 100 Patrick. Wonderful reflection and composition deserves it!
Mark
Hello Patrick.
You sure didn't used a mirrow?
Really a superb reflection in the water.
Gorgeous Ja
Patrick, I'm amazed how you manage to find such wonderful places to make your superb captures. This is such a simple composition which has produced a wonderful atmospheric picture
Hawk
Thanks for looking!
Yes Janet, lots of patience and I almost lost it too!
You're right Nik, it is very simple , but I could not resist.
Jan, it was only a mirror for a few seconds, never to return!
Megzie, you're not talking about yourself again, are you?
I grew up here Hawk, so I know where to go. I must admit that most of my shots are within about 40 miles of my house.
Patrick
Very nice, I like the ripples in the sand under the water. The nature feel is most prevelant at the base of the image. Love the mirror image, very serene. Jenn
No need to comment really, it's all been said. Just magical!!!
Geoff
Hello Patrick, well you captured the stillness of the day complimenting the beauty in the rock colours...the reflections add an impressive dimension to your scene.
Doug.
Now, yer talkin' a quality wee photy here!
Scottish for, I like it!
Good reflection but it's the almost abstract yellow arrow pointing into the pale blue colour clash that really makes this stand out!
Man I sound like a total anorak!!!
Really though Patrick, ... great shot, (even without any water movement!
)
Scotty
Lovely reflections Patrick, and the texture beneath the water is a good capture!!
Look forward to your night exploits my friend.
I'm sure they will be of the quality of your main work!
Regards
Dave
beautiful reflections and color tones, i like the simplicity of balance...
alex
Amazing detail in this - you can even see the ripples in the sand under the water!
Dionne
wrinkle less water. seems a rare event to me. well photographed.
Thanks for your comments!
I don't know how good they will be Dave. it looks like it takes a lot of practise, but I'm not one to give up!
Yes Robert (clevercloggs), I only see it maybe once or twice per year.
Patrick
Hi Patrick,
sorry i had to click and run the other day.
Amazing reflections, love the lighting, tones and textures, like a sheet of mirrored glass.
You really know how to catch this area and you do it so well.
Exceptional!!!
Take care.Ann![]()
Super reflections, Patrick. I might be tempted to crop a sliver off the bottom to give it a complete mirror image, but that aside, spot on.
Colin
Thanks for looking!
That's okay Ann, I'm glad you looked at it.
Colin, I thought about that, but if I pointed up a bit, I would lose the details in the sand and gain nothing but more straight blue sky. Yes, the symmetry is not exact but in general, you are usually you are supposed to keep things away from being centered. Still, a more panoramic crop is an interesting idea.
Patrick
Missed this one,the water is so clear, and the reflections are stunning.
hayley
Minimalist and serene - different to crashing waves, etc., but still lovely!
Love your portfolio shot too incidentally!
so superb Partrick if it weren't for the ripples in the sand ..... it would be difficult to tell which way was up or down ... a perfect reflection ... the colours are sooooo amazing! Well done on another fantastic image! Click*
Karen
this is such a lovely composition but the beauty for me is in the ripples underneath that still sea, wonderful colour superb Patrick.
Hello Patrick,
Having recently discovered your pf thanks to some kind comments you left on mine i have spent some wonderful time browsing your work, and i have lost count on how many times i have said WOW .
Its just not possible to point to any one image in particlar and say thats my favorite but i must say that i have come back to this one a few times.
I love the calmness of this and the sand ripples through the water, the superb reflection and amazing detail colour and composition.
You are a true artist.
Wonderful work.
Many thanks,
Malc.
Starting to get lost for words here! I've never, ever seen Point Reyes as calm as that ![]()
