The last light of the day came through a hole in the clouds at the 2300 foot level of Mt. Diablo, 20 miles east of San Francisco. I waited for the light to illuminate the farm house and some of the misty clouds. After I took the shot I uploaded last week, I ran further up the hill looking for a good chunk of lichen covered rock to include. I found it and waited. It almost never happened, but for a minute or so, it was like this. I'll admit that luck played a large part in getting this shot!
Things are drying up now so I may only have 2-3 more weeks of green grass before the dry season takes over. So I hope to get a few more like this.
Also, my company is being reorganized, so I may not be on EPZ as much as I would like for the next couple of months. But I'll check EPZ as much as I can and I'll still try to upload at least one per week.

Wow---a first
Equally as good as your last!
Hate these adverts!!!!!
As`always Patrick wonderful light and composition
Brian..................
Again the light is wonderful Patrick, lovely composition and colours, excellent work here.
Mo.
I admire your patience Patrick, it paid off again! the large version is fabulous.
Sarah ![]()
stunning piece of work as ever Patrick, hope you're able to stick around when things settle down for you.
CLIX
Good luck with the weather, a nice capture this one. I don't think it's pure luck although
Peter
Thanks for looking!
I don't like them either Kim.
Too patient sometimes, Sarah!
Yes Tony, I'll be around but probably at very unusual times of the day I think.
Patrick
Lovely mellow tones and gorgeous light.
Could be a shot of the Black Mountains in Wales!
Dave
It's not luck Patrick its your patience that got this beautiful scene, the clouds look almost like smoke rising, wonderful image, Adrian
Pleasure to be 30 Patrick, good atmosphere in the sky and detail in the fg rock!
gill
That is glorious Patrick.
I've been taking the liberty of showing a friend your pictures, as she might be moving to live in SF in the next year or so - she's a bit worried about the fog!
Had to look twice Patrick - thought it was Todmorden Moor! (That'd be England!) Lovely shot.
Kath
What thick mist you have Patrick, it almost looks like the hills are smouldering.
Thanks for looking!
You think so Dave?
Thanks Adrian. True, I did wait for clouds that possibly might do this, and I did climb over 1,000 feet to get to this spot, and I did compose it. But if it wasn't for this one minute of light, I would have come back home with only the one previously uploaded shot in a few versions!
Angela, why is she afraid? It won't bite! Will she live in the city? Where I live, (20 miles away) I rarely see fog and it gets nice and hot in the summer half of the year.
LOL - Kath!
Yes Cathy, it did look like steam was rising from a volcano or something. I rarely see that here.
Patrick
A super image Patrick, but I do feel that it lacks your usual punch and style which gives your shots that bit extra ...
Dave
Yes Dave, this is a much more quiet image. Things were moving slowly and the light was soft. I'm trying to mix it up a bit. I have a bunch of action shots in the que, but chose this one just to be different. LOL - I see you have a bunch of new ones, so I'll check them out so I can give them a good thrashing!
Patrick
Wonderful shot again, Patrick........
Hope your work problems turn out well....
Jouko
PS I´ve been a bit down and tired for few hours......I´m sure tomorrow brings better news again....I´m trying to get rid of this negative attitude, but it´s not easy.....
Patrick this is lovely. The light on the foreground and the lower slopes of the valley with the mist/clouds rolling over the top of the hill all combine to make a great composition. Well seen.
Ron
Quote: so I'll check them out so I can give them a good thrashing!
Ooooo I cant wait .... lolol
Dave
Thanks for looking and commenting Malcolm and Ron!
Jouko, it is perfectly normal to have these feelings. So don't resist them and don't get rid of them. Just let them happen. It is part of a process that needs to run its course. I don't know if I would handle it as well as you!
LOL Dave. Here, let me practise on my shot now. 'This is pure rubbish. I would be embarrased to put this god awful thing up on a public website, but obviously your standards are so low that your belly is dragging in the putrid filthy mud that is the foreground of this shot!'
Okay... I'm ready... after I eat lunch....
Patrick
Beautiful colour & light Patrick, excellent clarity.
Are you sure you've not been over here in the Dales for a while...could be England with it's greenery!
Janet
A gorgeous shot--- and I love the foreground!
Masterly work!
Jennnnn
The light through the cloud is beautiful Patrick. Well captured and great patience!
Another beauty, it is my goal to try and get a shot just like this, I am heading out to Washington State in two weeks and I hope to have some time to break from business and get some landscapes. You do inspire me to keep trying as your pictures always have such great contrast in the elements and vivid colors. Keep up the excellent work! Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
Hi Patrick,
This is as brilliant as the last one, love that touch of mist, looks like someone letting off steam...........lol.Those clouds are amazingly beautiful and the textures too.Amazing composition.Take care.Ann![]()
Thankyou for your comments, much appreciated.I did use layers,on each flower individually then merged them all together using photomerge and filled in the blank space with the bg colour of the flowers.
love the way the clouds sit on the mountains.. and the way the scenery layers , beautiful atmospheric shot capturing the essence !!
Nikki![]()
Lovely greens, and some nice soft light on that foreground rock. And you have more clouds on show!!
Subtle but nice. (sorry, hate the "nice" word, but it is nice!!)
Martin

looks like you have a smoking hillside there Pat, sure it's not the smokey mountains in tennessee...lol, this is a scene i couldn't do as when i'm at the location i can't 'see' the picture. The clouds gave you interesting light across the hillside though and you have nice textures in the foreground rock.
Patrick well worth the wait to come away with this one! amazing how those clouds seem like you can just grab them!
stay well
tonymarq
Nice light and color as always Patrick. This looks like a nice area to shoot. I will have to check it out next time I am up north. It's really interesting how the clouds are making contact with the hills.
Thanks for your comments. It will take me a while to catch up, but I will!
Janet, that may be true now, but it will look a lot different in a month or two. It wil be bone dry up here, so I'm getting my green grass shots now.
Greg, you should get more clouds in Seattle than down here. So you have a good chance for something like this. Can't give you any hints about where to go though. I've never been there.
Ann, that must have created quite a large file until you flattened it!
Thanks Martin for the nice comments...lol...
Terry, I'll show you how to do it when you move back up here. Though we may not have clouds by the time you arrive.
Dennis, it is a great spot, but it does take a long time to reach this spot. And the grass is turning brown now, so you may want to wait until next winter.
Patrick
Patrick when i first saw this as a thumbnail i thought it was the start of a forest fire. The sun on the clouds makes them look smoke like.
Wonderful shot right through with lovely saturated colours and tones.
john
Sorry for late comment patrick, but time seems to slip by.
This appeals to me as I am a fan of moody clouds. Lots of photographers attempt to get the bright fluffy blue clouds, but I like the more stormy/heavy feel which this has. The UK has this type of clouds more than most. Catching the light coming through adds to the whole image.
Regards
Edgar
I really like the dappled light and colours on the hillside, and the tones in, and radiance of the sky. Hope the changes at work do not cause you too much grief Patrick.
Nigel
This really deserves to be viewed large, the level of detail, the mist and the light all add so very nicely to the overall shot
Sean
You snuck over to Derbyshire to take this didn't you Pat? It has a real gentle English light look about it. ![]()
Thanks for your comments! I'll try to check in as often as I can.
Yes John, it does seem like a fire. But these are just clouds. In the summer, it very well could be fire though.
True Edger, you guys have more dramatic clouds over there. I have to wait for a long time for decent clouds!
Nigel, we will see. I'm not sure what is going to happen yet, but I know my schedule will change for sure!
LOL Kris (Ex), I don't get a chance for an 'English Countryside' sort of shot so I took advantage while I could!
Patrick
another classic shot Patrick.
Once i get to your level of quality i'll be happy
keith
Fabulous image Patrick the colours and composition are spot on. The dappled sunlight adds drama to the land and the sky is superb.
All the very best
Dougie
Super lighting that takes patience to get. Reminds of the Highlands of Scotland where light changes within the minute, and you miss it ![]()
Ken
Like the detail and colours in the f.g. rock and the overall lighting Patrick.
MikeA.
Amazing scene, P.....You've got the sun hitting the hills perfectly down pat it seems.....![]()
Hope you had a nice holiday......Still learning my way through the new and improved site...![]()
Cheers and have a wonderful week,
Suzan ![]()
the look good feel good feel of your work extends on to this image as well - however i feel that the composition is not as good as some of the others you have posted before...
just my thought!
Hi Patrick hows life sir, this looks a fine picture--The sky makes it for me.
Doug
Fabulous image . The light is fantastic . Wonderful scenary but you hardly need me to tell you as you get so many votes . xx
Patrick exposures bang on buts thats always the case with you ![]()
This could be scotland or the lakes mate..
But as much as i like the shot,i think in all honesty its not wowing to view as your other shots do..
For me too much trees, and a cenralish horizon line just does not have that visual impact for me..
Hope you dont mind the honest opinion.
Dave
Thanks for looking!
No problem Dave. I want real opinions. Otherwise I'll get deluded! This is more of a local interest spot for hikers. And it is so rare to have any decent clouds at all that I was glad for that! A nice lake would be good here, but there are no lakes!
Patrick
