After shooting an unusually good sunrise, I noticed these striated formations in the cloud deck, so I ran quite a way down the beach until I found a spot where the sandstone formations lined up with the clouds. Even the light on the water cooperated as though the sand on the beach is pointing right at it! Then I waited for a wave to complement the scene, and some foam to appear behind the ledge on the right so it would stand out better against the background water.
There is a surfer in that curl by the way!
I've been away for a couple of weeks so it is time to catch up once again. Is anything interesting happening in EPZland?

Great shot. Wonderful sky & nice lead-in from the rocks.
Rog
Geat colours and composition. The way you have captured the waves looks fantastic.
Richie.
That's one hell of a shot Patrick. Looking forward to the sunrise one.
Laura

What a great pairing of the clouds and the textured rock. Great shot.
Tim
Thanks for dropping by!
Yes Marilyn, EPZland. It is a quaint little village set in a picturesque valley where peace and harmony reigns supreme!
Patrick
Great image wit a fab sky and lovely foreground.
Cheers
Alan
Superb image Patrick. You've picked up the right place at the right time!
I have been waiting and waiting for your next upload!! It is that magical light again and the contrast of blues and golds. You portfolio is one of my favourites.
Di
Thanks for your comments. I did get lucky on this one!
I'm honoured Di!
Patrick

Jennnnnnn
Thanks for your comments. I did get lucky on this one!
I'm honoured Di!
Patrick
welcome back... and you bought a beautiful shot with you too... love it
Wonderful capture, I'd run down the beach to if I saw a sky like that.
Richard
Awesome image Patrick, great exposure and the colours and toning is awesome
Dave
That's one special sky! I like all the lines in this shot, you certainly take time to put it all together and it works a treat, even that little wave at the end of the rock - excellent work Patrick.
Sarah *
Thanks for your comments!
Glad you mentioned the wave Sarah. It looked empty out there without a good wave, so I waited for a niceley shaped one. Most were breaking closer to shore.
Patrick
Superb image with wonderful light, patterns and light. A beauty!
Rende
Everything perfectly in place a fab image..Oh have you seen the Pareen challenge yet?
Bernie
Thanks for stopping by!
The Pareen Challenge Bernie? Is that for shots from childhood or the '70's? I had one up for a while but maybe I'll put up another one.
Patrick
That's a spectacular shot, Patrick. Good to hear about the process that you used to make it too.
David
Not got the impact of some of your shots initially Patrick. But when you sit back and look at this in more detail, it is one of the best i have seen for quite some time. Would take to long to go into detail, but the elements came together here to produce some very special conditions indeed.
Phil.
What a lovely soft sky, just to sit back and enjoy the view, excellent lead in also
Peter
As you pointed out, everything works together in this shot. Great stuff.
Leigh
Superb foreground detail in those rocks which lead you all the way in.Stunning composition.
Tom.
Just amazing Patrick so sharp I think my feet got wet and sand in my toes
all the best steve
I think you knitted that sky Patrick ![]()
Love the freshness & clarity of this..
knit one...purl one...drop one ...![]()
Janet
Thanks Barry and David!
Yes, Phil and Paul, I usually like more dramatic waves but the structure drew me in once I found the right spot. I do have a more dramatic one taken just to the left and close to the water with a big wave and surge. Perhaps next time.
LOL - Knitting Janet? Hmm, that really doesn't evoke images of 'dangerman' , now does it??
Patrick
What a fantastic sky Patrick and you made good use of it.
Another stunning image Patrick. Top class .
Regards Cheesey.
That is some sky you got there Patrick. Not a stand out image like some of yours, but everyting combines very nicely.
Martin
Thanks for dropping by.
Yes Martin, this is taken from higher up than I usually go, but worth it in this case I think!
I have a dramatic one with this sky I may show later. That one has more action, but I went for the strong lines in this one.
Patrick
Love the clouds - also like that detail in the little patch of sand.Superb as usual Patrick.
Brian.
Thanks for dropping by.

Hi Patrick, hope all ok with the finger now, if you can take pics like this then all seems ok? Just love the echoing of the rocks in the sky, an amazing capture. Although I think a close up of few small pebbles placed strategically on that large rock could have produced another shot ROTFL, would you like me to post you some!!
Only joking, its fab
Mari ![]()
Thanks Jouko and Malcolm!
LOL Mari, don't bother, I'll just cut and paste 'em in from one one of your shots! This was taken before the finger but it's doing better now. I'll have another round next month though. It still needs work.
Patrick
What can you say . Superb Patrick
Brian............................
I love the cloud formations in this shot. They bring a great sense of perspective to the image. I hope the finger isn't too sore.
Ted
![]()
Thanks Brian Chris and Yoda!
It is a bit sore Ted but not too bad now!
Patrick
I should add that the surfer is hidden in the wave so you can't see her! Just as well, as 1/6 second would just make for a blur.
Patrick
Quote: Hmm, that really doesn't evoke images of 'dangerman' , now does it??
Flippin dangerous them knitting needles you know..![]()
So obviously yours Patrick, subtle colour, stunning light and fantastic attention to detail.
gill ![]()
Fabulous cloud formations - you can feel them drawing you into this image, Patrick.
Colin
I do like the patterns in this - the clouds, the lines on the sand and the layers in the rocks... nice one Patrick ![]()
Jeanie
Thanks for your comments and to the lookers too!
LOL - Yes Janet, so I've heard! I should not make light of such a dangerous activity!!
Let's see it Freda!
Yes Colin, It is sucking you in......
Glad you liked it Jeanie.
Patrick
Perfect timing, the light is well balanced and the scene seems to seamlessly blend together, Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
great perspective and nice colours throughout, just shows what can be acheived with a keen eye.
i've never seen a cloud structure like this, great stuff!
How do you get your thumbnails looking so good Patrick? Your thumbnail landscapes look better than most peoples large versions. Lol, and another beautiful shot.
One to savour Patrick, needs to be looked at for while to appreciate it fully. Do you follow the sharpening technique on your website?
Martin
The layers of the rocks are fascinating.
I really love the mood, sky and lead in to this great shot.
Absolutely superb - as always.
Annette
wow, the sky really adds the extra "wow" to this for me... perfect as always!
Thanks for stopping by and having a look!
I'm not sure Dave. It might have to do with what I'm going to mention right below.
Martin, yes that is how I do it. I sharpen each area separately at various radii and strengths leaving the sky pretty much alone. Then I sharpen all the land at 0.2 pixels at a high strength. I leave dark areas alone so as not to increase noise.
I like the rock layers too. This is a great place with lots of possibilities.
LOL Thomas, but how do you really feel? Don't hide it now!
Patrick
They just get better. This IMO is stunning in everyway..
regards
Edgar
This really draws you in, a fascinating sky, fabulous colours and an excellent composition.
C
Thanks for looking!
You don't see the bad ones Edgar! But I do have a few new ones up my sleeve.
Patrick
Glad i have just found your p/f Patrick! One of the best i have seen on the site. Great job
Rgds Ollie
I spent some time absorbing this Patrick. Wonderful lines and patterns in the sky, and textures/details in the sandstone strata.
Nigel
A brilliant shot Patrick, great sky and composition.
Pete.
This has almost a surreal quality to it. That sky is just amazing, and the rock striations add real interest and texture. Love that you don't oversaturate your colours. Think I've been to that beach, but never found that spot!
Cheers, Jon
I agree with Jon, it has a surreal look to it, nicely done Patrick.
Lisa
this is excellent Patrick, fair zooms you straight into the image, lovely work
chris
Thanks for stopping in!
Yes John, I do usually add 4%-8% saturation to the raw file sometimes but that brings it back from being too flat to a more natural state. Though I just did one where I had to desaturate because the sky had a lot of red in it.
Patrick
One amazing image Patrick. Love the colours, textures, composition, sky - did I miss anything.
Thanks for your comments!
LOL Gary, that pretty much sums it up!
Patrick
If I have done this right you should have an award now. If I haven't done it right I meant to.
Danny
Stunning shot, brilliant detail, love the sky.
Alexandra
Thanks Alexandria!
And thanks Danny, though I don't see anything yet!
Patrick
It's not really my favourite from your photos Patrick. Technically it all looks impressive, but the scene just can't captivate me (me not being a huge fan of landscape photography obviously doesn't help). but for me this one is just too much just sandstone and sky (good title though lol). Looking forward to the next one though ![]()
LOL Koen, it is probably because I am further from the water than usual. For the next upload I'll do on Monday, I got soaked! I'll see if I can cut and paste a train station onto the beach. That should do it!
Patrick
Beautiful lovely fore ground detail and a beautiful composition.
Pauline.
Fantastic shot, Patrick. It has everything, the texture in the rocks, the wave breaking and a sky to die for. Glad to hear you are feeling better and thanks for sharing your techniques with us. You always get your images spot on.
Valerie
Thanks for stopping by!
I see it now Dan, thanks.
LOL Valerie, thanks but you don't see the bad ones!

Thanks for dropping in! I'll be browsing around this week.
Patrick
A sky that is out of this world Patrick . Such a great lead in . xx
another stunning image Patrick I allway's enjoy your work really quality m8.
Steve.
Like the way the rock formation leads your eye through the entire image, almost like staring down a bowling alley with all these wonderful pins just waiting to generate a load of excitement
Well done !!!
Leon
Stunning --- perfect in every way. That skyline really draws you in.
Mac
That is such an amazing sky, the patterns give loads of depth and the cool colour makes a lovely contrast to the golden rocks!
Charlotte
ps just having a 'catch up' with your pf...yes I am also partly procrastinating but I can't think of a nicer break from the Chemistry than looking at shots like these!
I'm glad you like it Charlotte. I used to play tennis right after Chemistry just to get a decent break from it!
