The first storm of the rainy season blew through last week bringing with it some nice cloud formations. So I made a side-trip on my way to work with this image in mind because only at low tide can you get into this spot. Thanks to Martin W for seeing the posts as an abstraction of the city!
I am realizing that I should capture some images of the city skyline before it changes forever. A 1400 foot tower is about to go up along with several thousand footers and many more over 600 feet. (What would it be like 1400 feet up during an earthquake?) Fortunately, they are going up on the other side of downtown as seen from here. The touristy parts of town will remain mostly unchanged.
On this side of the bay however, life remains quiet and peaceful.

Perfect harmony and balance of nature so peaceful and beautifully composed, true the calm before the Tempest... stunning..!!
Nikki !
What a beautifully lit and serene image - great work, Patrick
Rob
still NO visible dust spots on CMOS! Where do you keep your precious!??? And don´t say it: I never change the lens! My Cannonn was dusty when I got it from Japan! Damn, they really should hire ME to the cleaning company! LOL......I love hoovering, though I´m not J.Edgar ! And you can call me Al ![]()
I´m beginning to forget, why I am here! LOL....
Hmmmmmmm????? This is quite nice from you, fog man ![]()
Jouko
That cloud sure looks menacing! I really like the outline of the city in the background - excellent work Patrick!
Sarah *
Beautiful Patrick. Sausalito is such a wonderful place if not too mobbed by tourists... like at this time of the day. In fact the whole area is lovely from there, over the headlands and up the coast to Mendocino and beyond. Lovely image. Cheers, Martin.
Thanks for your comments!
Well Jouko, actually I have discovered some dust spots. Just small ones in the corners. I have used the Eclipse fluid and some swabs but the spots are still there. I had to change lenses and it was windy. I did it in a plastic bag but some dust still got in!
Sarah, I knew you'd liek a little architacture. I'll try to work some more in this winter.
LOL Tony, I'm saving that one for later. Kim would not have liked that one I suspect!
Patrick
This is brilliant Patrick, I love the silhouettes of the city and the bridge on the horizon - in fact I like all of the comp.
I love the balance of light and the serenity in this image.
Allie
In a bag! Now that´s clean work! Think we should build up a cleaning company! You could clean CMOSes and I rooms ! LOL......
Jouko
how VERY peaceful.. lovely colours and comp'osition
a soothing image for all id say
matt.
Usual very high standard Patrick.... the foreground is screaming out for some minimalistic images in the vein of David Burdeny....... I hope you took some ![]()
I don't think I have come across your portfolio before and am just going to have a look slowly! This is sensational..the light is absolutely magical with wonderful colour and a great feeling of space.
Di
Thanks for your comments!
LOL Jouko, I may not do well on my half of the business. There is still dust in there! I'll try again tonight.
Kevin (thewaiter), yes I had him in mind here and added a bit to what he does. I will be back to get those sorts of images from a different angle that I could not reach on this trip before the light got too harsh!
Thanks Di. Have fun! If you have questions, feel free to ask. And I have a lot of information on the website.
Patrick
I love shots like this with posts in the water.. the cityscape on the horizon finishes it off perfectly, Patrick... good to see you finally found some clouds.. ![]()
Thanks for looking!
Glad you like it Jeanie. And may I say how lovely your nose looks today - LOL!
Patrick
A real beauty Patrick, I love those soft colours and the city in the distance.
Simon
Quite serene, and image of a city that lets you see the beauty and avoid the hustle and bustle and competition for space. There are a bizillion crops that I can see. Images within an image that makes looking even more interesting.
The foreground posts look like an abstract impression of the distant city. Tis a beautiful image.
Thanks for looking!
LOL Jouko, yes it is a big fuzzy thing, isn't it? Cute though.
I see them Melanie, and I do like to stay away from the pile drivers of the city right now, though it can be an exciting place.
Good eye Martin. I was wondering when somebody would mention it! I didn't want to put it in the description so see if it was noticeable. But now I can. I'm just experimenting with abstraction now.
Patrick
My thanks go to Martin too. Very nicely put together Patrick.
Dave
Capture that great skyline as often as you can. Gah, I hate that they keep building up.
It's a wonderful composition.
Anne
I like the soft, pastel quality - really brings out the tranquil setting and mood. Beautiful.
A bit quiet & peaceful for you Dangerman!
Yummy silvery sea Patrick.
Janet
Another nice image Patrick, great exposure and a great piece of photography.
Scott
Thanks for looking!
Yes Anne, there is a big battle with many trying to limit the size amd amount of building. There have been severe limits for the past 20 years until now.
Janet, um.. well I did have to climb down a slippery retaining wall to get here. And I got my work clothes a bright seaweed-green. Does that count for danger?
Patrick
Perfect illustration of a soft and silky early morning Patrick. Awesome shot.
Ron
Superb photography Patrick, the composition is stunning. The skyline looks almost to have been layered on - amazing...
The sky looks great with the different colour and movement. The bridge and the building certainly are very well positioned in the shot
Sean
Excellent composition, and wonderful feel Patrick.
Nigel
Beautiful, beautiful ambience and exposure Patrick but the composition bothers me a little.
I know it probably wasn't possible and you will have made the most of the viewpoint you had but I would have liked to have seen the posts not cut through those stunning forms in the background. A higher position maybe? But then I can appreciate the balance of the small fg posts on the left would have been spoilt........aaargghhh so many elements to unbalance!
Still very much clickable mind but maybe worth a re-visit?
Dan
Thanks for looking!
LOL Martin!
I know what you mean Dan. I do have some from slightly higher where the posts to not break the horizon but they don't quite have the depth. So I uploaded this version instead. When I came home after shooting this, I thought that those would be better, but I like this more with bits of the posts breaking the horizon. I did make sure that the posts did not touch important parts of the bridge or skyline. There are several other things I want to do here, so we will see.
Patrick
No problem Patrick. I know what you mean, only when you visit an area yourself can you truly understand the photographers reasons.
Look forward to what else you can come up with as that horizon detail is to die for!
Dan
Nice echo between the posts and the skyscraper skyline, lovely range of light and colour, beautiful exposure.
Thanks Dan, you were right to spot my original intention! Maybe with different light the higher view will work better. I'll look at them again tonight and maybe process one.
Thanks Eric,
Patrick
What? No big surf? No crashing waves? You going soft on us Patrick?
Iain
LOL Iain! Sure, there were plenty of big waves, just not around here! Okay, I'll see what I can do.....
Patrick
There is absolutely nothing not to like about this image...you've captured the most grandious fashion. ![]()
Well done Patrick...
Cesie
Another wonderful image Patrick, like the milky water effect and beautiful reflections.Superb.
Mo.
Beautiful, intriguing and enlightening all at the same time.
May all your clouds be of the right density, speed and shape from now on.
Dave
Wonderful skyline, water texture and light Patrick all making a stunning image
Mari
My pleasure to be number 100 for this fabulous image, Patrick. I really like the tranquil feeling you have captured here with the city skyline in the distance. The wonderful colors speak for themselves.
Eric
Magic shot, Sausalito is a stunning place, and great for Lobster too ![]()
Tom
Hey, would you look at this. Another stunner. Well done. Keep em' coming
You must have power over the weather and the wind-wonderful shot-well done as usual.
One of those images, Pat, one would like to keep forever-- serene and lovely to view!
Thanks, Jennnn
The light and composition reminds me of Venice....apart from the bridge that is.
Stunning........
gill
Nice pastel shades here Pat, i think in this case the long exposure on the water has worked better than having waves, great reflections, i still have a lot to learn.
Thanks for looking! I'll try to catch up more tomorrow.
True Tom, great lobster here!
Yes Terry, I tried a couple with shorter exposures but there was too much going on and it was a distraction. Sometimes action is good and sometimes not. It was peaceful here so I wanted a peaceful image.
Patrick
Beautiful delicate feel to this.
I'd have it on my wall.
Guy
I just took another look at this and covered the bottom of the shot with a piece of paper, it looks better if those 3 pilings were cropped from the bottom of the shot if you see what i mean?
Wonderful composition keeps the eye moving to each area of interest, and I disagree that the bottom of the picture needs anything changing as its where the reflection of the looming black cloud sits forming a horizontal symmetry within the shot, nice on Patrick.
Pooch.
ah... thought I wouldn't like this one Patrick, but that layering feel is just magic, with the soft silhouettes of the city and the bridge in the bg. Terrific work
Thanks for looking in!
True Terry, there is a panoramic crop in there as well as a few other crops.
I like the black cloud too Pooch. And it was not just fog too!
You lucked out Alan, this is the first rain in 6 months!
LOL Koen, another one fooled! Actually, I wasn't sure either until I saw it on the big screen. And the print looks great.
Patrick
This is AWESOME, Patrick. Could be the opening scene to a Batman movie as we swoop across the water to Gotham City...
*cue Batman music*
A ![]()
think this is brilliant Patrick - it has elements of the abstract and minimal which works so effectively with the city skyline in the distance - love it
A shot that has so much going on. This is one you can not just glance at. The city scape adds a different aspect to this shot.
Perfect...
Another hugly impressive photograph Patrick.
Didn't see the skyline of the city in the thumbnail, so opening this image was like opening pandora's box!
A1 photography Patrick !!
Cheers for the 100 click !!!!!!
Keith
Thanks for looking!
Cheers Matt, good luck with the baby!
I could not resist Keith! I see I've missed a lot so I'll catch up when I can.
Patrick
We get quite few shots of posts sticking up out of lakes with hills or mountains behind, but none that I can remember with a cityscape behind. It's a beautiful image Patrick.
Thanks for looking!
Yes Dave. I wanted to add somethnig extra to that theme. I still like 'just posts' though if other things are right.
Patrick
All been said Patrick, but I love the texture of the water and the bridge in the distance
Malcolm
Silhouettes in a sea of glass. How poetic is that ?
Great image Patrick.
Brian.
Beautiful image, Patrick. I love the city sky line and the way the posts in the foreground compliment it.
Ted
Thanks for looking!
Good to see you back in action Thomas!
Patrick
hi patrick another class shot from you
this is awsome
did you get wet feet ? ![]()
Well, Patrick....I'm definitely not first and surely not the last....This is breathtaking to say the least.
Luv the city in the bg, with the slightest hint of fog, (Nice Touch)...![]()
The clouds are way cool, ya gotta Luv a good storm coming in over the bay...![]()
Keep your feetsies dry...![]()
Have a nice weekend,
Suz ![]()
Thanks to all the lookers and Eve!
Almost Phil. I took this before work and it was low tide. I ended up sliding down a slippery rock and getting seaweed all over my pants. Fortunately I had no big meetings!
No Suzie, you are definitely not first this time. No chance of the feet staying dry this weekend though. I have a few very wet places to visit! You have a great weekend too. Good job keeping the mysterious one's spirits up!
Patrick
Hi Patrick,
Nice composition as always, the scene look very trtanquil and your long exposure has added nicely to the mood of this shot, movement in the sky compliments that in the water nicely.
Ben
I think the mysterious one had a good weekend, the countdown continues.....Hee Hee...![]()
Did u keep your toesies dry?
Have a good week, Me ![]()
Thanks for looking in!
No Me, they got a bit wet. You may see the results soon!
Patrick
Simply stunning, a fantastic image.
Very calming and so serene.
Annette
Thanks for looking!
LOL Scotty, that is exactly what it was. Though I've had it planned for a couple of months now for when conditions were right!
I'm honoured Sara!
Patrick
great Patrick but from one who doesn't intentionally seek out scenes but reacts to what I find, may I suggest and I hope you don't mind but I would have kept the horizon above the posts. Its a very fine image regardless.
Thanks Tommy and Colin!
Not really Suzie!
Hi Kin, I do have one with them below the horizon but it doesn't seem to have the punch of this one. So I carefully positioned the posts so as to not block the important background elements. But some like it the other way, so I may post the other ones.
Patrick
This one calls for music to relax by it is so beautifully gentle on the eye. Therefore it would make a good wall picture in the lounge of an hotel.
(*.*)D,
Hi Patrick,
It's all been said,stunningly lit and shaded.Take care.Ann![]()
Another outstanding image Patrick, love the sense of serenity in this one
A stunning shot once again from you Patrick. Great silkiness to the water and lovely tones.
1400ft on a below ground rubbish dump with an earthquake in progress hmmm.......
Anyway on to the photo - this really captures the imagination Patrick, brillant use of the sticks made all the more special with the city skyline in the distance. The skyline adds to the photo but doesnt detract from the main subject.
Wonderful shot! Superb composition with the city in the background. Love it!
LOL Gary, it would be a bit exciting I bet!
Thanks Benjamin.
Patrick
A superb image. Soft reflections and all quietness away from the bustle of city life . xx
I just came back to this and noticed how the city skyline is sillouetted against a bright patch of sky where the rest of the sky is dark, it looks really stormy, i hope you can show me where you took this shot from sometime, i'd like to get one for myself.
Its all been said..... stunning image beautiful tones and so tranquil... Karen
Well deserving of all the attention. What a way to present that skyline!
Cheers, Jon
