Last upload for a couple of weeks. I'm visiting relatives in Los Angeles.
Another one with a cool feel to try and beat the heat. The wind bent the trees and grasses as the fog rolled quickly over the lower hills at Mt Tamalpais, 10 miles north of San Francisco on a late May evening.
So I chose a 1 second exposure to show some movement in the branches and grasses, but not too much. (Is this movement distracting?) Shorter exposures just looked a little blurred and a longer ones just looked mushy. Anywhere from 3/4-1.2 seconds seems right for a windy day up there.
Then it was a matter of timing one full sweep of the branches as a gust of wind hit them, to get a swirling effect.
Standing upwind from the camera blocked the wind and stopped the camera shake.
1 second exposure @F18 with ND grad 0.3

Love the mist and depth in this image
Dave
another great eplanation of technique, thanks patrick.
love the fog below, looks surreal to see clouds under you
steveb
Beautiful scene Patrick great composition.. Hope you don't melt...Judith
Another great shot. Can`t wait to get some mist up in our hills, although its rained it still looks very dry.
Great view,well taken.
Some good tips in your description-- something to learn even for a macro person-Thank- you!- This is a gorgeous image--very inviting scenery and very well done! Jennnnnn
Thanks for your comments.
Thanks Judith. It is cooler now. Only about 34c today (which is average) at my house and cool (18c - also average) and foggy at the coast.
Patrick
Excellent composition, the rolling mist is a real bonus.
Simon
It's that little roller coaster of mist top left that works for me. Again just enough light hitting the land to lift it.
Nik
Thanks for looking!
Yes Nik, the fog is moving rapidly from right to left and over a submerged mountian ridge and into a valley, creating that roller coaster effect. You should see it in person. It is like watching a river flow over rock!
Patrick
Tremendous shot Patrick, the colours and the way you've caught the fog is excellent
It certainly looks cooler than the news we've been getting over here of your temperatures!!
Has to be seen large to really appreciate the mist in the distance, well captured indeed
Mari ![]()
Thanks for looking!
Yes Mari, the days of 46 degree temperatures in the shade are over for now! But it rarely gets above 30c at the beach, since the ocean temperature is about 13-18 year round! The fog is from hot air flowing over the cold ocean.
Patrick
Like the mist in the trees and the clouds banking up in the bg. beneath the delicately coloured sky.
John
A very nice image indeed with good colours and a nice comp.
have a good time Patrick, like the pic by the way. Found it interesting, your new profile pic that is
)) And you talk about me!!!!!!
Ange
Thanks for looking.....
Ange, I'm inspired by the best! That's my good side, isn't it?
Patrick
Hi Patrick, ooh another fog shot, love the light and colours, great timing!
Charlotte
A very fine lanscape photograph, I'm fascinated by the composition (the fog) A good point of view...
Well done.
I reckon your timing was just about spot on. A potentially difficult situation very well handled.
Kris.
Looks like you timed the exposure spot on, like how you've captured the movement in the trees and long grass and that's one hell of a bank of fog..
Great work.
Tony
I really should learn a ten finger system! Already 45 clicks and thought I was the FIRST!?
This is fabulous, Patrick!
Such a great place to take shots!
Love that fog....
It has been a few misty mornings this summer, but I should be out taking shots at 4 AM to capture the fog...I´m getting too old....LOL....the warm bed wins : )
Have a nice break with your relatives...
...and remember to take LOTS of shots! I just purchased a 2 Gt memory card this week....now I come back home with about 4 gigas RAWs, when shooting...and I know, it´s not amount that counts, but I´m still learning....IF one shot from a hundred is a proper, I´m satisfied...LOL...
Take care my friend...
Jouko
Exposure time looks good to me Patrick, just enough to 'feel' the wind.Love the mist rolling in,looks like a good vantage point there, quite high up I feel.Lovely fresh colours,a well timed image.
Janet
Thanks for looking!
LOL - Jouko? Were you sleeping? Yes, I'll get some shots. I don't take many though, but I do have 7 gigs worth of cards just in case! I'll still do a quick drop in from time to time and I'm not leaving until the weekend anyway.
Janet, it's good to know that the movement creates an impression of wind.
Patrick
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz..............
Oops! Almostfellasleep...LOL...
Good to hear that...we´ll meet again....Zzzzzzz.....
Jouko
Great shot Patrick. You have clouds there! I like the dappled light on the conifers, and the undulating mist in the background. The movement in the grass and branches is not distracting to me. How high are you here?
Nigel
Thaks for looking!
Wake up Jouko, you'll miss the sunset!
Nigel, the ocean is about 2200 feet almost straight below where the trees meet the fog.
Patrick
Hi Patrick, awesome atmosphere, love the rolling fog, detail, timing, lighting, exposure, tones and presentation. What a magic photograph to leave us with whilst you go on holiday.Astounding composition.Take care.Ann![]()
Enjoy your holiday.
very well taken Patrick and that mist really creats an air of mystery as to what is below it ![]()
As always you you have your finger and eye focused to the environment, and this shot is no exception. You have something for everyone, gorgeous sky, clouds that you can touch and a landscape that makes green with envy, excellent work! Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
P.S. Patrick enjoy your visit with relatives, kick back and use the time to unwind. Because once you get back that code will still be waiting for you to complete!
Oh, will send you a chilled 6 pack to help you cope with the heat! ![]()
That cloudscape really comes alive when viewed large, fantastic photograph.
Beautiful, the fog/mist in the trees makes it stand out and for some reason (personal preference probably), offsets the intentioned movement and makes it all work.
Regards,
Jan
Fabulous light Patrick, you have captured this just right!
gill
Another with the wow factor great landscape
Brian.......
Patrick this is just beautiful. You have got the movemrnt effect perfectly here, not to little and not over cooked. The cloudscape is just beautiful too, like a misty sea, just beautiful. What a stunning place you live in.
Ben
Thanks for stopping by!
You're right Greg, I'll try to relax. At least there is no code to write for a whole week!
Yes Ben, I do live in a great place.
Patrick
Very good light Patrick and I like the fog swirling around the trees.
However I feel you have tried to create a FG when there really isn't one there. I am sorry but I find the ' blur' a real distraction. You ask the question yourself in the description, and I think you probably have your own reservations on the movement in the FG.
I seem to be on my alone with this view but I say what I see.
Brian.
incredible!
I maen every shot is just amazing from you!
Thanks for checking in on my photo. I replied to your comment too ![]()
Thomas
Thanks for checking and commenting all my previous macro's.
Really appreciate that, Patrick.
Have a good evening.
Jan
another picture postcard image...love the fog rolling in and the California blue sky at the same time..
alex
Wow Patrick that's a stunning photo, you've picked out such a good scnene with good natural colours, excellent as always, Adrian
As always Patrick your images are in another league and this one is no exception.
Mike.
Thanks for your comments! Sorry I haven't been around much the last couple of weeks.
Yes never know Brian, there may be others that don't like the movement that just don't say anything. This one is not for everybody (I guess no photo really is!)
No problem Mr Cool... I mean Thomas LOL!
Patrick
You're a lucky man to have so much spectacular scenery, Patrick.
Have a great visit to LA. No doubt we'll get to see some pretty amazing images from there too!
Colin
i'd say you have the shutter speed about right here Pat, too much and i would think the grass would disappear altogether, nice colours here too and nice to have some interest in the sky, going to get up there myself sometime but am waiting for the clouds to come back.
Pat really beautiful capture with great depth and detail! the cloud cover surrounding the trees is outstanding!
stay well
tonymarq
Excellent work again, Patrick. Lots of interest throughout the frame, and I like the combination of soft light on the foreground and the touches of sunlight on the trees. The movement of the grasses is a nice touch too.
Pete
Ok, this is another one of those shots that is so good it's mind blowing. I don't think the momvement is distracting at all. On the contrary it definetly adds to the photo.
Hi Patrick, I'm going to have to get one of these fog filters LOL. I always enjoy the sweep of your landscapes. Nick.
A superb capture Patrick, great clouds, colour and light.
Pete.
Glad to be the 100th your landscape images are very stylish and classy!
Simon
Great panoramic view Patrick, loads to look at, great detail and superb light

Hello Patrick.....
