I still have a few more Mexico shots to upload, but because of the heat, I've decided to upload something a with a cooler feel to it.
The official high temperature in my home town east of San Francisco was 46c both Saturday and Sunday. And we had no power for most of that time. So it was a rather warm weekend! Most people went to a place like this at the coast, where there was a cool fog and temperatures around 20c!
Mt Tamalpais is about 10 miles north of San Francisco and usually sits above the persistant fog bank allowing for great views like this one. I took this back in May when there was still a little green in the grass and a few cloud layers in the sky.
I found this composition using Google Earth. People say it is just a map for geeks but so what! I was able to hike right to this spot and know almost exactly what it would look like based on my knowledge of how the fog behaves.
0.6 second exposure (to soften the grasses in the breeze) @F16 with ND grad 0.9 + 0.3

you certainly get some interesting weather in san fran.
. . 46c and no A C ?. . .wow! so no wonder you need cool photos and places like this . .
. that touch of light on the hills and out on to the fog / clouds . . really works! . .
Mike.W
What a great location Patrick, I like the play of light on the hills and the sea of fog and clouds. I thought it was hot here at 29c. 46c WOW !!
Sez ![]()
Super looking landscape Patrick, looks a bit like Tuscany from the thumbnail, wish google earth was high res over my area..one day I guess.
Nigel.
Wow what a fantastic idea, Patrick, never thought to to use Google Earth (i'm a geek also then LOL).
Also a fantastic shot, I feel I could just step into it, its so clear.
Mari ![]()
PS LOL re: my "Dali" shot, i'm honoured, I absolutely love his work ![]()
Wish I was somewhere like this at the weekend. It's not been anything like 46c, (more like high 20's/low 30's) but still too hot to be wearing a suit! I feel much cooler looking at this.
Another great image, love the grass effect and the patches of sunlight.
Its always good to read your comments, theres always soething to oick up on. Thanks
Kim
Thanks for your comments!
Yes Richard, you can drive to your preferred weather here. Very convieniant.
Yes Mike, I needed a break and those Mexico shots remind me of the heat.
Sez, I came out of a bookstore at 11pm, and my car's door handle was actually almost too hot to touch. A rather strange sensation with it is dark out.
Never Steve! I don't wear pocket protectors!
Nigel, they are always updating the images, so eventually your area will be high res too.
Mari, he is my favourite too. I would eventually like to find a way to imitate his work in photographs somehow. I'm working on it! Can't find a good set of stretchable crutches though - LOL!
Patrick
And I had +4C one morning in norwegian mountains, not so very hot. Lovely details
Peter
LOL...though I still take issue of your use of the word 'compose', this goes with work of yours that actually uses light, Patricko, and so as with those others gets a click.
Lots of lovely cool greens and soft clouds in the excellent landscape--totally appropiate and very well done! Jennnnnnnn
I've been here once or twice. It's an absolutely georgous area and this image does it justice. This area is not far from Gallen Rowells famous Cyprus Tree silhouette. Makes me miss the Bay!
Thanks for your comments!
Peter, +4c sounds great to me right now! Well, maybe +14c!
Ah but Keith, notice my very subtle wording. I wrote that I 'found' this composition..LOL! Yes, I'll be trying harder to get more light in my shots as time goes on.
Yes Scott, I do have a few shots of Galen's tree from the exact same spot, but I really need a longer lens to get the same crop. I have included it in a wider landscape instead that I have not posted anywhere yet.
Patrick
Absolutely a wonderful image and that beautiful sky and colours a great shot.
Very nice again - this shot kinda reminds me of the type of pictures you would have uploaded perhaps 1 1/2 years ago - remember all the ones above the clouds!!
46 C?????? THat better be a dry heat. Around here we get to 33 and we're dying.
FYI - Just a note about the tags that you're using. I learned this the first few days, but I think that you have to separate your tags with commas (','). I tried to search for this very picture with the tag 'tamalpais' and nothing came up.
Great shot - I think this is going far today!
Mike
Cool is good. Delightful clarrity throughout Patrick and I particularly like the sense of movement in the f.g. grasses. Nick.
hot hot hot.........
Hope it gets cooler there...
Power back already?? Hope so...
I´m on holiday this week and just came home...visited at the worlds largest wooden church today...The church of Kerimäki is the world’s largest Christian wooden church and has the most spacious interior in Finland. It is 45 meters long, 42 meters wide and 27 meters high. The height of the dome is 37 meters. There are altogether 1670 metres of pews and a seating capacity for over 3000 people. Including standing room, the church can accomodate almost 5000 people.
Took lots of shots inside and outside the church....perhaps some rainy day???
I´m not sure though...
BTW...another fantastic shot from you...
Stay cool!
Jouko
me tough....LOL...Dunno where you got that idea Patrick?
I can see I've missed a few belters from your good self over the last week or so, well done to you mate, I'm off to have a looksee now....
Ade
nice work Paqtrick, love the splashes of light in the middle of the image
steve
Thanks for looking!
Yes Mike, it is a dry heat! It is the kind of heat where you wear extra layers of clothing because your exposed skin will sting even in the shade!
Jouko, I've never seen a wooden church that big! Even if you don't post any to EPZ, I'd like to see what it looks like. Yes, the power is on now, but some places are still without power. Today it will only be about 42c so people will now be without their electric heaters - LOL. So they will have to bundle up to stay warm!
Ade? Naah... you're actually a pushover, especially on Cheryl's shots - LOL!
Patrick
Has a nice wide ranging view to it Patrick, and there's just enough light hitting the hills to provide a point of focus - I think without that light the composition wouldn't have been strong enough?
Nik
Great shot - glad to be number 30. Google Earth ehh? Clever - better than an OS map and compass!
Nice with all the colour bands - interesting variety of textures too.
Hi Patrick, yes the cool colours in this are lovely and I love the patches on light on the hill and catching the mist!
Charlotte
Patrick, I really like the light catching the top of the undulating ridge, and the shades of green in the trees. Great shot. I can't imagine what 46C is like.
PS. It hasn't arrived yet.
Nigel
Hi Patrick,
This has a beautiful, serene and calm quality to it - the light is just wonderful. Very nicely done.
Debbie
Patrick: Yes, it really IS that BIG!
The shots inside the church are quite ok, but, when shooting @10 mm outside the church that BIG, the lines are falling, if you know what I mean....the shots look a bit odd! And it was not possible to take shots from longer distance, because of the other buildings and trees....
Nice to hear the power is back....
Stay cool : )
Jouko
another beauty, love the colours and the sky, looks like layers as you work your way down the image (or up of course).
What a cracker Mr Smith! Colour tones/composition is fantastic!
lloyd
Hi Patrick, long time no comment !
This is gorgeous. I love the distant light on the hillside and the shades of green and the wonderful sky. Another top notch shot!
Colin
This one stands out as special not only for its composition but for those so cool colours, a joy to look at Patrick.
Alethea
Lovely delicate lighting, and so many shades of green - marvelous capture.
Bill
beautiful..
the layer of coloursis wonderful.
Oh how l wish l could do this....
excellent work Patrick.
Lizzie
x
A stunningly beautiful landscape with even more beautiful light!
gill
Thanks for your comments!
Yes Nik, this one needed that light for sure.
It stings the skin Nigel. Even in the shade.
I'll have to see them now jouko!
You could do this Lizzie, as long as you don't mind climbing down a cliff to get here!
Patrick
I bet at 46C you wish you could dive right into those clouds to cool off LOL, I know how you feel at the moment, we had those temps here around new year, most uncomfortable. Lovely shot BTW
Great shot, Patrick! I witnessed a similar sight a few months ago on my way to work when the city of Belfast was covered in fog like this but unfortunately I didn't have my camera.
Ted
Patrick beautiful capture on the rolling hills, tree line and cloud cover on drop off and sky! Breath taking image!
stay well
tonymarq
As always you bring out every detail in the landscape.Beautiful job Patrick.
Well done, Patrick - this is really lovely. Especially like the soft cool tones and the diagonal layers ...
Susie :o)
Beautiful lighting, lovely sky. You seem to be surrounded by magnificent scenery and you do get the best out of it in your photography.
John
It has definitely got a cool look about it Patrick. I like the soft grasses and just the glimpse of the sun on the hillside
46c thats hells temperature surely - 36c has blown us out !!!
Brian
Hello Patrick.
What a wowwow, Landscape scene.
Really Beautiful, a pleasure to look at, Superb. Great work on it, Thanks for showing.
Jan
Bloody hell - 46C! We are struggling with low 30's.
Superb view you have captured Patrick.
Mark.
Beautiful view Patrick, not as dramatic as your seascapes. But a nice peaceful scene with lovely sky.
SB
Very nice indeed Patrick, love the coolness to this image . The movement in the grasses is lovely, looks almost like a whisp of fog at a glance. Very well filtered too, tonal balance is spot on
Ben
Great shot for a geeky war mongerer
Nice bit of light hitting that middle ground. Is this just over from the golden gate? I remember driving north from the airport on the way to Yosemite and there was a lump sticking out of the mist.
psst joke btw.....but you did know that didnt you?
Wow!Patrick that is just Spectacular,like a dream.Jawdropping!Take care.Ann![]()
Thanks for dropping by! I am WAY behind in looking at photos but I'll have more time soon.
Yes, it has been a little warm. Only 40c today. Time to break out the thermal underwear!
Yes Ben (ghibby) I did try to make a flowing effect similar to the fog, which was moving quite fast I must mention.
Russ? Whatever do you mean? LOL! I am NOT a geek....
Actually this is further up the coast behind that first lump. But maybe it you were about 20 miles away and out of the foggy areas, you would see this spot.
Patrick
Great sky Patrick, love the different shades of green in the land, strangely etherial
Malcolm
Well I guess the Google stock being at over 400 a share is well worth it if it can help turn out work like this!
Excellent shot Patrick, you can feel the subtle breeze and bask in the cool surroundings, want to be there all ready! Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
Patrick you are the Marlon Brando of the Landscape world on E photozine! Another feast for the eyes.
Lovely light on this great composition...Sorry about the heat been watching the temps. on the news...Judith
As the others have said, get to the mid thirties here and we're wrecked.
Such a beautifully cool image given your current weather - and how wonderful to be able to drive to a different temperature! LOL
Having discovered your work only recently, I've had a great time looking through your pf and this is yet another WOW!!
Great work, look forward to seeing the next one
Geoff
Thanks for looking! I shoudl have more time to see some photos later today I hope!
Russ, I'll get you for that! Expect the geek squad to be knocking at your door at 3am. Oh, what is your address again??
You're right Greg. But it is down to 384 right now, so it's a bargain!
LOL - Simon (poltavia), the what of the what? I never would have thought.....
Thanks Judith. It has been a bit uncomfortable at my house lately.
Yes Suzi, just drive a few miles to a different climate zone. Right now it is cool and foggy in Berkeley but very hot again at my house. But if it gets cold in Berkeley or the coast, then my house is warm and pleasant.
Patrick
I like this - the composition is beautiful and the colours are striking.
another very well captured image, I too am suffering from the heat here, its been 112 for the past 2 weeks, and do enjoy an image that brings back coolness...looks like a great place to sit ontop of the hillsde and admire the freshness of a cool breeze....I too use Google Earth for a great map...so I guess we are both California Geeks..
alex
Thanks for your comments!
LOL - Alex, don't admit it in public or you will be subject to humiliation on a grand scale! I wouldn't have it any other way. Yes, we had 115 and 116 (46) on two consecutive days. Only 104 (40) today as I got home. It actually felt good and I worked in the garden. Tomorrow should be a little cooler yet!
Patrick
Another beautiful shot and what a fantastic sky. (we think its very hot when the temperature approaches 30).
David
Does your camera actually have an iso 50 setting or is that the equivalent with your ND filters fitted?
Yes it is refreshing for me too as we have another 36°c in France today. The successive green layers colors are great, perfectly completed with this great sky. I now will start considering download google earth!
Denis
I skimmed over the thumbnail initially, and that was my loss. The composition does lack a strong focal point (I guess that is what Keith is referring to), but the soft light carries the shot, combined with the touches of sunlight on the hill. The SF fog in the distance is the finishing touch. Very nice indeed.
Pete
Hello Patrick. This shot has such a magical feel to it and depth. It makes you want to be there. Most excellent.
~Alley~
Crikey, This shot is well deserving of the amount of attention Patrick. You must have the high res map of your area in Google Earth, your lucky, in my area there's only the City but it is a fantastic program...Anyway, again, awesome shot, regards, Rob.
Perfect and admirable control of all the elements. Somehow, you found clouds.
The Naperville I grew up in can never be replicated, a town of around 5000 with rolling river-carved hills and farmlands surrounding. Gone forever. Naperville is now over 200,000 people, often the second largest city in Illinois. Glad someone likes it today. Alameda is more like it used to be.
The skipper is, as usual, a crop. I think you could add a mutliplier to your current lens and get better results.
A beautiful "dreamy" shot Patrick. It's nice to see green grass ... even here in the UK where we don't usually have extreme weather all of the lawns are brown and crunch underfoot. I've forgotten what rain looks like.
Dave.
A very pretty image Patrick, that cloud/fog formation makes it for me,looks like a fluffy sea.. but the composition is excellent & the colours are so fresh, lovely scenery so well conveyed here.
Janet
The capture is great but the post production is superb!!!
Great calming, cooling image, thanks because it is roasting here in Glasgow Scotland also.
Keep 'em coming!
Scotty
46C?! I didn't think that kind of temperature was possible unless you are in a desert or something!
We could do with a bit of that heat down here, it's freezing.
Very cool shot. Particulary like the clouds and the texture of the grass in the forground.
Atu
You really do have an eye for a shot Patrick. Terrific layers from top to bottom.
Iain
Very beautiful. Love all the green colours.
Excellent capture!
Benjamin
Thanks for looking. I'll try to put up a new one tomorrow.
David (big_beavis) the 5d has an ISO setting of 'L' (I think) that is below 100. You ahve to set it in the menu system. Why? I don't know.
Yes Pete (peedeephoto), I can tell that it would be easy to pass up.
Yes Verne, the old Naperville is gone forever.
Atu, we are on the edge of the desert here. We get 20 inches of rain, all in the winter so must fo the year is dry. And if you are far from the ocean, it gets very hot. Some inland places average nearly 40c in July just 80 miles inland. And We are just 200 miles from Death Vallet where the July average is 47! It was 52 last weekend there!
Patrick
lovely lighting and colors. another gorgeous scene Patrick! well done!
The balance of light in your scene is good Patrick and the silver tops to your grasses provide a beautiful fg. sheen...nice cloud formation.
Doug.

Doug.
Wee glitch Patrick, nothing to do with senile yet.
Mt. Tam. Never been up there. But all the shots I see look great. Maybe one day. Great work!
Poor you having to suffer such temperatures... I'd expire in 46 degrees!!
This is quite a subtle shot and very lovely it is, too! I love the swaying grasses in the foreground and the light catching the hills in the middle distance. Beautiful!
