This is a very wide angle shot of this unusual sandstone rock formation taken at 17mm just after sunset and at high tide. I had to hand hold the ND grad for the entire 1 minute exposure since the filter holder becomes visible at such a wide angle.
LOL - By the way, this is a 100% vegan image. No dairy products were used in the making of this photograph....
65 second exposure @F22 with ND grad 0.9

Realy as the wow factor Patrick superb
Brian.......................................
sharp with exquisite details, ( no vegetaion visible) The spilt milk is wonderful-- LOL! and the brilliant sun to the right caps this splendid image nicely without distracting!
Your work always amazes and pleases!
jennnnnnn
what a lovely rock Patrick.
What filter system do you use by the way? I don't get any vignetting with my Lee holder (which has two filter slots) even at 17mm.
Mike
Lovely smoothness to this Patrick,a pretty misty quality from the water.
Now how did you take this..dangling from a bungee or waist deep in sinking sand ![]()
Janet
Superb image, Love the exposure and colour tones. Regards Cheesey.
Beautiful movement from the clouds and the appearence of the water compliments it so well, not forgetting the lovely colour appearing on the right
Sean
...and I moan, when I had to hold another ND grad for a second or two last Thursday! LOL.......First time ever I used TWO (2) ND grads at the same time....My filter holder can be used only with one filter at the same time ![]()
BTW....... Grand image, once again! And folks, THE LARGE VERSION looks BIGGER!!! Go for it! ![]()
Jouko
Thanks for looking! Is EPZ running slow today? The pages are taking a LONG time to load.
LOL Jen, thanks.
Mike, I use Lee filters and a Cokin holder with the usual #3 slot cut off. It works fine for now except at 17 and 18mm. I have no vignetting problems either. Here, the left side was darker at the time so that is fine. I should get those bigger and thinner filters and the extra large holder. I forget what they are called, but it is distracting to hold onto a holder for a minute while watching for large sneaker waves to hit while you are stuck out there not able to move for such a long time.!
Yes Jouko, holding filters is a pain when a wave could strike at any second and you have to run and abandon the long exposure! I need a better system. If the filter taps the side of the lens while you hold it, you can ruin the exposure if it is a few seconds long.
Patrick
Something rather surreal / Daliesque about this fine shot, Patrick - striking!
Rob
This is ridiculously and absurdly brilliant!!!! Wish I could say more.
Rowan
Thansk Rob and Steve.
LOL Janet, No bungee chords were used! Though the tripod was on a rock and I was on the back side of it partially submerged in water at the highest points. I had to stop the exposure 3 times because the water got too high! But real danger? Naah!
Patrick
A beautiful image and an interesting rock texture Patrick, a pain with the filter, have the same problem at 17mm with cokin Z.
MikeA.
superb image, i have the same problem with the holder.. not sure i would want to stand while waiting for the exposure holding the filter!
no dairy products in photography... im shocked! you should market that recipe
This is a wonderful shot, everythings so...well...smooth. I guess taht happens when you get over a minute!
can I just ask, was the ND just for the sky? And how dark was it when you took the shot? - a minute sees a hugely long exposure time to not come out with a white screen at the end of it!
Absolutely brilliant work ![]()
Mark
Yes Mike, it is a pain!
LOL - Genese.
Mark, this was after sunset and it was getting dark. The dark part of the grad covered the top right third of the image at a 45 degree angle. Sometimes if it is brighter, I'll put on a circular ND8, or even 2ND8's if I'm not at a wide angle. I can get a 1 minute exposure at mid day with 2 ND8's!
Patrick
I had to clone my fingers away from my handheld filter shot...LOL......Never would have known, they did appear in the shot....... @10 mm all is possible...LOL......
I really should purchace Cokin Pro holder, so that I could use more than one filter at the same time...and take those loooooooonger exposure times...Nothing but costs here
LOL....
Jouko
I have the impression that this might be one of those images that people either love...or don't love quite so much as those who do love it! I love it, Patrick - not least because of that wonderfully dominant, centralised rock!
Patrick .. Ive just advertised a set of Cokin X pro's unused in the classifieds lol ![]()
Thanks Alan and Ed!
LOL Jouko, I wonder what 10mm would look like on the full frame sensor. Like a fisheye?? my fingers migh tget in the shot even if they were behind the lens!
You're right Kris, I should get the Cokin pros. And then the 16-35 2.8 mk2 for the slightly wider view (and all new filters for the 82mm ring size), and then the new 5D and then.... well, I guess I'll settle for the filters for now!
LOL Ian, so do you love it as much as the people who kinda love it, or just love it almost as much as the people who really love it? I can't decide, so I want to be 'just friends' with it..lol..
Hey Dan, I'll check it out. I don't know much about it yet.
Patrick
Fabulous detail in the rock, the milky ocean and a sunset.....what a bargain!
gill ![]()
A superb seascape. I'm sure that everything else has been said.
Ken
This is so beautiful, looks a bit alien too - gorgeous
Ann ![]()
Thanks Paul and Ken!
Ann, I tried to get a melting watch in there but it got washed away!
No milk Gill, just a touch of soy!
-39C Jouko? At that temperature you would probably be relaxing in your swim trunks on a lounge chair under the swaying palms sipping on an icy drink with a brolly in it!
Patrick
Wonderfully mystical feel to this scene Patrick, as someone who used to cook in a vegetarian/vegan restaurant I appreciate your efforts lol
fine image, Adrian
I saw the thumbnail and thought this might be a bit disappointing from your good self. How wrong I was.
Martin
This is amazing Patrick, real quality.
I used to have filter trouble but got so fed up that I now use the Lee holder and wide angle adaptor with Cokin Z Pro ND grads. I see this is what you use but I don't get any vignetting with the 17-40, have you got the wide angle Lee adaptor??
I'd be interested to know what tripod you use, it must be a very steady one to get such a crisp rock at 65 sec exposure.
Mari
Thanks Joe, Simon and Ned.
LOL adrian, and no animal fat was used in the cooking process too, just about 5% saturation in the raw file in C1pro.
You're right Martin, the thumb is not too impressive, but it does pique the curiosity a bit luckily, or it would get completely passed by.
Mari, I think I just have the P series holder. It has 3 slots and I cut the last one off. I don't get vignetting either. I use a super-lightweight Slick tripod (so I can carry it when I scramble around on the cliffs) and a Manfrotto pistol grip that is somewhat heavy unfortunately but very fast so I can compose it really quickly. Even in a 20x30 print, you can see every grain in the sandstone, so the tripod is very solid, but you'd never guess when you look at it. If I went to an EPZ meetup, I'd probably get lots of laughs about the scrawny looking tripod!
Patrick
Very strange surreal atmosphere Patrick, full marks for perseverance
Malcolm
Are you absolutely sure that you haven't used milk here, great smoooothness
Peter
Thanks for looking!
LOL Peter. No, I use only the finest triple filtered soy in these images. I would never cause harm or even any physical stress, of the sort that milking would do to a cow, in order to produce an image. True, not milking a cow can lead to problems as well, but that is beyond the scope of this discussion!
Patrick
Patrick,
Great to see you back...been missing your stuff.Gorgeous seascape executed to perfection.
Guy
Thanks Guy and Chris.
Sorry I haven't been able to return the views and or votes, but it is taking over 1 minute for an EPZ page to appear on my screen. I can barely even make a comment on my own shot!
Patrick
This is brilliant Patrick. The shot has a wonderfully dreamy and ethereal feel. I half expected to see the Excalibur sword emerging from the stone. Spot on.
Ron
Lovely and dreamy. Stuff we expect from you. Beautifully photographed.
bill
Thanks for looking! More that I can say for myself, as the pages are loading so slowly (at home and at work) that it is nearly impossible for me to see anything. Maybe tomorrow will be better!
Patrick
I like the silk like effect of the water Patrick and that flash of colour on the horizon - fabulous work as usual from you! Site is still slow today ![]()
Sarah *
Thanks for looking!
It is still taking over 30 seconds for an EPZ page to display for me. Is it this way for everybody?
Patrick
I used to love these milky shots but after the last upload of 1/6 sec, i am definately turning vegan Pat.....lol
a great sky though and i like the foreground.
EPZ is loading super fast for me today, other times though it can be painfully slow, so much so that i come back to it later.
I really enjoy looking at the light your able to capture in your shots, even the rocks and boulders take on new form with your skillful eye, excellent work! Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
Sorry, I haven't replied in the last week or so. I don't seem to have as much time as I used to to travel around here. I've made my way back onto EPZ in the last month or so, so I'm just trying to get back into the swing of thing.
I see that you're still up to you brilliant work, although not as frequently as before. Are you still trying to sell stuff??
Good work
Mike
This is startlingly beautiful, Patrick. I can't remember the last time I stared at a rock so intently...wow...
A...
I agree with Martin L. Its simple but it delights with its colours and feel.
Dave
That was a long way down!
Silky smooth with beautiful detail. That's a great rock looks prehistoric.
Kate
Have the TOn on me Patrick. As always....outstanding photography
Mike
Thanks for looking. We are back in action!
I go back and forth Tryy, so I do a bit of both.
Me too Mike. I got super busy and I can't seem to get enough time to make my comments lately. I'm fine, just doing software programming consulting, my day job, and some photo stuff. I sold 50 shots at a local art and wine festival recently! Now I'm busy after all that. You should try it. It is a lot of work though.
I have three words for you Kim,
...squirt..squirt...squirt!
That's a lot of weight to bear Mike!
Patrick
A fantastic shot Patrick, a gorgeous sky, an excellent capture of the texture of the foreground rocks, and I love the sea, it's like a sea of mist.
Pete.
Beautiful image Patrick and well worth the arm strain ..... ! ![]()
Thanks for your comments!
The site seems to be running well now, so maybe I can browse the galleries today.
Patrick
An outstanding image Patrick, love the feeling of calm in this one
That is a beautiful image Patrick,as they say outstanding work here.Like it very much.
Mo.
Silky smooooooth! Just gorgeous Patrick, the lighting is amazing.
Lisa
Thanks for looking!
Yes Lisa, I wanted an extra smooth look. Leaving it in the blender on the highest setting was the best way to go here..LOL!
Patrick
I never thought I'd reach the end!!
I've missed a few this week as I was too impatient to wait for EPZ to keep up ![]()
This is beautiful Patrick - I love the smooth exposure on the water. Very nice.
Debbie
Thanks Debbie! I don't know how anybody even found this picture in the gallery. The site went dead about 10 minutes after I uploaded this but comments kept creeping in. But I could not make more than about 3 comments myself for about 6 hours.
Patrick
A real stunner...As always..
( sorry for lack of comments only returned in last week or so from busy work period )...
You are a great inspiration...
Superb new upload. Tried vitting on this earlier but the sight was down. But anyway fantastic shot
I'm late again Patrick. I love the sky and detail in the rocks.
Nigel
Thanks for looking!
No problem Edgar, good to see you back.
Patrick
An amazing out of this world shot! It looks as though you've completely scrubbed the rocks - not even a barnicle!
This is wonfderful Patrick. So smooth and clean with a surreal feeling to it, especially that monster rising out of the soup!
Best wishes
David
Lovely trademark-style shot - love the rock formation.
I'm also very proud of your efforts with regard to animal welfare! ![]()
Thanks Karen and Gary!
LOL David, that woudl get me an EC for sure!
I try my best Cathy!
Patrick
Not that wow fator of the previous but still a nice one all the same ![]()
Dave
True Dave, the smooth ones are much more calming. Maybe I should sell prints at meditation centers!
Patrick
Outstanding tranquillity, and this has an amazing painterly quality.
Allie
Just like a painting with the most wonderful light and softness..meditation centres would snap up your prints I should think.
