I saw few high clouds drifting by in the weather satellite photo, the first in over a month. So I took the opportunity to go up to Mt. Tamalpais above the fog. So did a couple of other photographers on the hill to the right. They seemed so small compared to the grand scene before them, but they also became a perfect focal point for this scene. Especially in the 4,200 pixel version where even their shirts are easily seen.
They had long zoom lenses on their cameras. Maybe they were trying to focus on the fog flowing through the forest.
It was perfectly quiet, except for the sound of the waves crashing on the beach below the fog, and the sound of the photographers talking.
0.2 second exposure @F13 with ND grads 0.9 + 0.6

Jouko
Hi Patrick,
Welcome back you were missed mate. This is up to your usual high standaed.
Keep them coming.
Mike
Beautiful subtle colours, lovely composition, stunning capture.
C
Beautiful shot! The sky, the layers, the colours, the shirts, it's all beautiful. Superb picture. Love it!
Benjamin
Beatiful shot Patrick. Lovely muted colours and a slightly surreal feel from the fog banks rolling in around the trees. Perhaps the sky could do with colour saturating a wee bit? but that's just my opinion.
Dave.
Absolutely fab. I didn't notice that you were above the clouds at first but that just adds to the drama.
Thomas.
Thanks for looking!
Yes Jouko, I'm back at least for a short while. Still have lots of work to do on the house and these have been the only clouds in months. This was taken a week ago and no clouds since. The sunset on this day was awesome and I may show that later.
You might be right Dave. I left the saturation bar unchanged and right in the middle for this one.
Patrick
excellent capture of the rolling fog..I have to put this place on my list to visit...
alex
Wonderful rolling hills and the fog is amazing. Great capture Patrick.
Derek
Beautfiful muted tones and superbly composed. Natural and peaceful. Bruce
sigh... this just makes me want to roll down those hills right into those puffy clouds of mist.
Stunning !!
I thought the fog was the sea from the thumbnail. Wonderfull sky .
Pete
Beautiful image, - I really like the overall tone.
W
Fantastic shot, Patrick. The larger version looks great on my monitors. -=Walter
A sensational image Patrick. The undulating hills add a special touch along with the sky and the low cloud. I like this one !
Phil
great light and exposure, your choice of composition enhances the rolling hills
Wow! This is some shot absolutely wonderful Patrick, love the hills and that beautiful sky the fog looks great i want to be there, excellent work.
Hi Patrick,an absolute dream,love the fog,hills,texture and tone.Take care.Ann![]()
Nice to have you back, Patrick. Another beautifully composed and exposed shot.
Colin
Hay Patricks back,
nice one, its a shame there isn't a little more colour in the f/ground, but when you have no sky for months and no rain that grass is going to cook.
I trust you have had a good time on your holiday.
Regards
Mike
Thanks for looking!
Yes Mike, I had a good holiday. Little time for EPZ or photography though, so I'll have to catch up. The grass is a golden brown, so maybe I'll bring that out a little more in my final version. I just don't want to do too much, as the colours here were very subtle.
Patrick
Thought this was a seascape Patrick..great fog image & a very nice time of day to get that sky.
Janet
The fog-master has struck again and I like the smooth curvature off the hills in this landscape, peaceful
Peter
Good to see you back Patrick... hope the work at home is coming along nicely. Good BBQ?
Looks like you need a drop or two of rain - I will bottle some for you - we've had plenty the last couple of days.
Jeanie
A sensational image!
What a fantastic photo oportunity for you!
Dawn ![]()
Superb landscape. The composition colours and details are excellent.
Ken
Wish I could do stuff like this... fantastic. It's all been said above, so I'll just click :o)
Leaving me breathless-- Wow, Wow, what a scene-- Wish I had words-- but it is very, very good! etc.! Jennnnnnnnnn
Glad to see another upload from you Patrick. Great sky, low cloud and rolling landscape.
Nigel
This has beautiful sky and I love the mist in the valley. I also love the way the rolling hills take you into towards the mist, but I feel there is perhaps too much of the hills in the foreground - I personally feel it might be more balanced without the front hillock with the waving grasses...
Stunning Patrick a superb piece of work brilliant
Brian............
Love the clouds in this, Patrick, they look like an ocean lapping against the hillside. ![]()
Michael.
Wonderful photo, composition and colouring are excellent.
Regards
Clive
Hello Patrick, you have been absent without leave for a little while, its not good enough, lol...seriously beautiful sky and the inverse atmosphere is impressive...grasses although a little flat match the subdued twilight ambience. Good work.
Doug.
this picture has beautiful sky the colours are stunning! great shot i love it!
Patrick stunning view perfectly captured! love the lead with the rolling hills to the water!
stay well
tonymarq
Stunning scene, excellent natural colours, impressive photography, Adrian
I would have though a darker FG would have worked better with the great and colourful sky my friend. It's still very good and says Patrick Smith.
All the very best
Dougie
Excellent work as always Sir and welcome back! Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
Thanks for looking!
Yes Jeanie. A few drops or rain, or at least a few clouds would help! But it would ruin the grape harvest, so never mind!
LOL Jennnn, that's good enough for me.
Cathy? Do you mean the very first grassy hill?
Thanks Doug and Dougie, I may liven up the foreground grass a bit. I left it alone in the raw file. LOL The 'Doug's' are a tough audience today! I'll give it a shot.
Thanks Greg.
Yes John, it is probably only good if you have a big print, because they are hard to see here.
Patrick
when i was there last weekendi i was standing right where the photographers are and then i went down the other side, the hill is really steep and once i started running i very nearly couldn't stop and thought i was going head over heels, glad i didn't though as i had my camera attached to my tripod in my hand with my camera bag on my back, that might have been a really funny sight for anyone watching....lol judging by this shot i really need to get a couple of extra N.D Grads, not sure whether to get more cokin or change to LEE though, i don't know if i'd notice the difference, this shot is well lit and nice and sharp.
Hi Patrick, love the fog creeping up the rolling hills, and a fantastic capture of the sky!
Charlotte
Congratulations on a stunning image, Patrick - an absolute pleasure to view. Hope this finds you feeling fine!
Susie :o)
Superbly atmospheric capture Patrick - your description enhances the effect - I'm sure I can hear the waves crashing beneath the fog!
Bill
A excellent example of being at the right place at the right time...
And knowing exactly what you are doing.
Alan
And I thought some of our grass over here looked a little sunburnt! LOL.
This has everything right in it,i particularly likethe movment in the midfield grass.
Think its a view of heaven personally... beautiful Patrick, just beautiful!! helen
At last the wait is over!! Nice to see another upload and what a shot too. Love the fog coming in and the stunning skyscape you have captured here Patrick. Nothing to fault here at all, a beautiful image.
Ben
hewwww-weeeee
what a scene!!
Great sky, color, and clouds,
great capture Pat!
Mr G Boobahhh strikes again!!
Take Care!!
Thomas
Thanks for looking!
LOL Terry. You have to go slowly down the hills because the brass is very slippery and dry. Some people practice snow skiing on these slopes in the summer. I have Lee ND grad filters and they are great.
Thanks Susie, I'm doing well.
Yes Nik (chuff), it is just a wee bit dry over here!
Thanks Cathy, I may try that later. I could crop it but the resolution would decrease then. it will be easier when I get a longer zoom lens.
Yes Ben (ghibby), I haven't been around EPZ much, but later this fall when the clouds arrive, I hope to have many new ones. Thanks for the encouragement!
The what Thomas? LOL!
Patrick
Amazing how all of your images makes you wish you were there. And that can't be just because of the locations!
Tommy
Your excellent photography and style of capturing an image remains inspiring. Beautifully rendered scene...
Regards,
Jan
I must have had a blonde moment as I was sure I had commented on this wonderful capture days ago..lol...Judith
Love the lead in composition, Patrick. the light on the scene is great as is the fog and the sky. Beautiful scene and very well presented.
SB
A stunning image, such detail and wonderful colours.
Barbara
Lovely subdued colours and I like the layered effect of the receding hills Patrick.
MikeA.
Hi Patrick
Sorry I haven't posted any comments recently, I've had a massive flare up with the Athritis. Am on the mend now which pleases me as I'm coming over to Carmel in 4 weeks.
Tanya
This is really something Patrick, love the clouds and colours, well done.
Richard
Hi Patrick. I like the viewpoint you've taken here with the hill descending into the main body of the image. Nick.
Nice description.....I just Luv the rolling toasted coloured hills....Makes me want to be right there....That just beats all!
Hope you have a nice weekend, P...![]()
Cheers,
Suze ![]()
