Just before my trip to Kauai, I was in a 'fine art' gallery in Carmel, California and came across an image taken under the Hanalei Pier in Kauai. The photographer wanted the equivalent of 2,500 Pounds for a 28x40 print! So I put this down on my list of shots to take on my trip. And here it is.
This was taken just as the sun rose behind and to the left of the camera into a brilliant red sky. But there I was under the pier pointing in the opposite direction. But the light hitting the concrete was worth missing the sunrise. The shot I saw in the gallery was taken at mid day and did not have this light.
I wonder if she has sold any at that price?
Even this shot was slightly dangerous to get. At least for the camera. Every minute or so a larger wave would be big enough to brush up against the underside of the pier trapping me inside. So I had to wait for a long period of small waves in order to take the shot. Fortunately, most waves were only a foot high, but the camera was about 1 foot from highest water for the entire time of the exposure. It took 5 tries before I was able to keep the camera in place for the entire 30 seconds. And about 5 waves passed under the camera as I took this shot.
30 second exposure @F16 with inverted ND grad 0.6

Big wow on this one. £2'500 worth!
Superb composition, repeats, exposures..All! Paul
Another great one from the master off living dangerously, nice green tones
Peter
Fabulous Patrick, great detail throughout, but it's that patch of Jade green water that does it for me ... just lovely!!
Paul
Great colours and wonderful perspective to give that vanishing point effect. Great shot!
Mark
Didn't take this for one of yours from the thumbnail Patrick. Excellent choice of shutter speed and I like the diminishing perspective. Class work.
Nick
Superb Patrick !! Excellent work ... agree with Paul's comment too.
Bert
Very strong graphic lines in this image - well done. Think that it would look good in B&W and other versions of toning!
Jacqueline
Excellent abstract view Patrick. My brother is just about to come back home from 2 years in Hawai'i He visited Kauai for the weekend last week and loved it - didn't quite have the same weather as you by the look of it.
The more I look at this the more I like it.. how does $25 sound? ;o)
an interesting shot, its not the parick smith trade mark , but i like this alot...
alex
Thanks for looking!
I wish Paul! But I refuse to do the whole 'limited edition' 'artificial scarcity' thing. Even if I was in that position to be able to do it.
Yes paul and Bert, the green water was nice and warm too!
Jacqueline, that is a great idea. I'll ahve to lear about B&W conversions first but this might be one with which to experiment.
LOL Rob (vaughar), I'll take what I can get!
Yes Alex, I wanted something different. Like the pier shots I got in Mexico. I am going to work on a series of these sorts of shots. I just sold 4 of these to co-workers without even asking.
Patrick
You should be able to sell a few copies of this; first-class image.
Terry.
Something very compelling about this image...haven't figured it out yet but keep coming back to view it.
I like it Patrick it has a good Dof ,the eye leads nice , well done glad the camera made it,
Doug --- and you to ,wear a life jacket next time----------LOL.
Truely fantastic Patrick, the light at the far end on the water and the colours and textures of the concrete together with the fact that the water looks like a fine mist making the pier to "appear" (lol) to be floating make this a absolute cracking shot.
Darren.
this is a very impressive shot patrick, excellent photography, well done mate.
marc.
WOW, is all I can say. It goes on and on. Definitely one of those pics that needs to be large to be appreciated.
Teresa.
How much you selling this one for Patrick?
Leads the eye wonderfully Patrick. Cheers for your recent kind comments mate and if I don't speak to you beforehand have a fine Xmas and a prosperous New Year.
Ade
I think you could get at least £2.50 for this Patrick - lol
Only joking of course
Ange
Thanks for your comments!
I hope you are right Terry. So far, so good!
LOL Douglas (wyatturp) never!
Yes Darren, it does look like it is floating. It was a little dizzying to be in there.
Well Teresa, for you I'll give you a break off the 2,500 Pound price..lol! Actually I'm not sure. But in the last couple of months people have been buying them through word of mouth. But the printer I was using went out of business so I'm trying to figure out what to do.
Thansk Ade, you have a great Christmas and new year too. I might squeeze in one more before I leave for a week next Friday.
LOL Ange, if this was Monty Python, you'd offer me 'A Pound!' But with inflation I guess that £2.50 would be about right!
Patrick
Stunning architectural shot Patrick, with an almost abstract feel to it, love the view into infinity, impressive work, Adrian
Perfect symmetry and exposure.Love the textures on the concrete pillars from the water running in to the sea/makes an excellent contrast to the green water colour.Superb.
Tom.
Wow Another stunning capture Patrick
Excellent work
click
regards
chelseak
interesting image, how something so mudane can become so abstract and interesting to look at.
Its the light at the end of the tunnel thing...just can't stop looking ![]()
Chris
Excellent interpretation of depth and perspective
mike
Now thats what I call composition!! Great capture Patrick.
Phil.
Good shot - interesting choice of subject. £2500?!? That's a lot of money for any photographic print!
Think I'll explore the underside of some bridges now!
Steven
Wow,what a shot,I bet you are well pleased with this result Patrick.Superb depth & perspective, excellent tones in the water..which at first glance I thought was eerie mist.Lovely work!...Dangerman strikes again!
Janet
What a fantastic shot, Patrick. Be careful. You don't want to drown that D5 of yours. ![]()
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and all the best in '007.
Too bad I won't be in town when you are down here. It would be fun to take some shots together. Watch for some Buffalo snow pics when I return. -=Walter
Points from Finland, please...... The smaller version: sept point
The LARGER version: dix point
The tale: intéressant
I´ve been so tired, that I was asleep and dreaming in French...LOL.....must be because of this seasonal sickness????????
I have found out lots of interesting activity in the air tonight.........
Jouko
Amazing photography Patrick. Love the floating effect from the misty water. Superb camera work.
Rg Tony
Absolutely fantastic! I've tried to take shots from under piers but, it is very difficult to keep the camera still and I am afarid of the water!!
Thanks for your comments!
Yes Steven, get under the bridges. I think I'm going to hit all the piers I can now.
LOL Janet, 'Dangerman?' Stupidman, or idiotman perhaps!
Hey Walter, with the way things are going, I would not count on snow even in Buffalo. But the odds are still with you. Eventually we will meet up.
I'll take dix Jouko - LOL! What activity?
Yes Taya, you really have to bury the tripod deep in the sand, as about 5 waves passed under the camera during the exposure.
Patrick
Once again . . . . what else can I say about yet another superb photograph by this very talented photographer.
Brian
Wow! This is absolutely a wonderful image, amazing work here Patrick, like it very much.
Mo.
Excellent work, Patrick - I like the distant green of the water. That, with the composition, gives the image great depth.
Pete
This is good and cleverly thought out Patrick, if the art dealer sees this he'll be worried sick wondering what you are going to do with it!!!
Regards,
John
Seems you're still doing dangerous things around the coasts of Hawaii (as I recall from before?). Love the shot - see if you can make that money too!
Do you know how to take a bad shot, Mr Smith????
This is simply wonderful. Reminds me of one of those never ending corridors that frequent horror movies (lol)
Great stuff, Patrick.
Colin
Thanks for your comments!
LOL John, maybe I should take this into the place and see what they think?
Um, I think you are right Angela. I did get myself into some rather tricky situations!
Yes, Colin I definitely do. You should see the 4 shots just before this one, where I had to uproot the tripod half way through the exposure. Definitely NOT fine art - LOL!
Patrick
ALL the activity seen here...LOL...
80/52 my recent stats for today´s post....
BTW....The weatherman just promised some SNOW for next Monday! WHITE CHRISTMAS : ))
It´s has been a real winter in the northern Finland all the time...lots of snow and the temperature is from -20 to -25 C....
Just watched the movie on telly and they had lots of SNOW in LA California and ALL those famous Hollywood hill letters were covered with that Hollywood snow...Have you ever seen that Hollywood snow??? Can you make a snowman of it???
Is it eatable???
Why do they always go out and play in the snow???
So many questions here...LOL...
Jouko
your a brave man Patrick, the shot is perfectly composed and executed
Spectacular-- You got the lighting right on! Image design is masterly and draws the view into the image---way into that green someplace at horizon!
Jennnnn
Thanks for your comments!
Snow Jouko? That is great news. I was starting to wonder. Yes, I think that your warm weather was just on the edge of the freezing line and the line will move over your area soon.
It does occasionally snow both in LA and San Francisco. Maybe once every 20 years. But usually when a cold storm from Alaska moves in and then you get one really strong thunderstorm and it dumps a few inches of snow in a local spot. But it is never below freezing when it shows so it melts quickly. It snowed about 20 years ago down to sea level in a few spots. But it was +8c and melted fast. You would NOT want to eat LA snow. Too smoggy!
I liked the water too Jennnnn.
Patrick
Thanks for the feedback, Patrick....
Last time we had this warm and no snow back in 76....I hope these kind of weather come in 30 years periods...
Jouko
Great shot, Patrick. Worth the risk. Of course, if you got 2500 pounds for this you could buy a new camera (if it drowned).
Verne
I wish Verne! I'll bet that lady never sells any. But if she does, I want in on the action....
Jouko, now that I think about it, 1976 was the last measurable snow just north of where I live, but it did not snow in some other areas. I have noticed that when we get colder than normal weather, you get warmer than normal. But it is only +13c right now when it should be +16. But it will be warmer next week, so that is when you will get snow!
Read a few lines down on this page. It talks about the snow of 1976 and other local weather things.
Patrick
Gorgeous endless shot. The colours and mistiness here are divine!
Andrew
... and on to infinity. What a fabulous image; I can just make out the swell of the tide in the foreground, but it's the green that makes this for me. You're living proof that you have to see things in a different way to produce the goods.
Allie
really clever image - beautifully seen and taken.
Chris
Superb, very interesting to hear about.
Respect!
jonny
definately worth £2500 patrick, a cracking shot and very well taken
click clint
Thanks for looking!
Allie, I liked the green too. That is why I had to invert an ND grad. The spray was a little too bright, but the green was there between waves.
Clint, I wish you were right!
Patrick
striking, almost perfect abstract; is there done some manipulation like pulling up the brightness and colors under the bridge?
alfred
Thanks John and thanks for looking!
Alfred, in the raw file in Capture 1, I set the saturation to +10% (which is about average for my shots), and then in PhotoShop I adjusted the curves to give it more contrast. I did see if I could saturate it more in PS but the details became blotchy and strange looking when viewed at full size. I try not to saturate in PS because the noise gets bad. Then I sharpened it, resized it and that was that. It was an easy one to process. I did spend about 20 minutes trying to get this right when I was under the pier. So that is where the real time was spent.
Patrick
Perfect composition and perspective Patrick, so much depth!
gill
Another stunning image, Very well taken, Congrats on your 100th,Click.
This looks like a scene from a computer game, you know where you are going down a long tunnel looking for things to shoot at, the textures and colours here are amazing, and i love the long exposure effect on the water, you took the risks and got your shot mate.
I don't know what to say, you really worked the shot and the fruit of your labors paid off, this is absolutely stunning, and now one of my favorites. Your attitude and your energy can clearly be seen in all your shots, but this one is just fantastic, Spot on! Click!!!
Greg
What a super pattern shot, Patrick. You're a brave man!
Jim
Stunning photo Patrick. As mentioned before, it looks like a setting for a game like Half Life. Top quality
Different style for you Patrick, but quality as always.
Dave.
The way you describe the problems and how you overcome them in the descriptions of your images make your portfolio a very interesting read Pat.
This is simply one of the most eye catching images I've seen on EPZ. I love the way you take the time to create your images by being out there in the field and not in front of a PC which is the only way many would be able to attempt something similar to this.
Excellent work.
Ian.
Stunning Patrick, if a little dangerous to get, worth every minute.... So unusual and really says more about contemporary art than it does for photography. I could live with this on my wall..... forever. helen
Thanks for looking! I went under the Berkeley Pier last night at low tide and got another one like this one. I'll show it later.
Yes Terry and Koen, I know what you mean. It remeinded me of those 'Doom-like' games.
Wow Greg, I'm honoured!
LOL Jim, brave or maybe dumb, I'm not sure.
Ian, what you wrote makes it all worthwhile!
Yes Gaz, I tried some without the inverted grad is the spray from each wave made it too bright. I just did one of the Berkeley pier and I needed an inverted 0.9.
I wish Dave!
Patrick
Patrick:
I love your work and especially find this piece haunting and beautiful. Thank you for the visual/emotional experience!
Any time you are in SO CAL - coffee?
Carole
Hello Patrick. Its nearly all been said....its a real cracker...superb work done.
~Alley~
OUTSTANDING!!!The reflections and shadows and light are amazing as are the perspective, tones and exposure.Patrick this looks abstract, gorgeous and beautifully symmetrical.Class!!!Take care.Ann![]()
love the patch of green at the end of this - think that it really pulls the eye through the picture. Fantastic shot!! I have just had a look through your portfolio and I bow down in awe!!
Kim
lost for words patrick, theres no ends to your talent!
this is a truely magnicifant shot, well done you!
The water looks fab and that pier is neverending!
Big click* from me !!!!!
Cracking again Patrick, ... but all the way to Kauai just to photograph the underside of a pier????? LOL ![]()
Sctty
Wonderful Patrick. That little bit of green is the finishing touch. Without it the shot would be still very good, but so much better with.
Martin
You have lined up this shot perfectly Patrick. I am positive that I would not pay what the photographer was asking. I'm glad you and camera are ok.
Nigel
Thanks for your comments!
Hi Carole,
Perhaps we could do a mini EPZ meet in SoCal if we could get Walter (gajewski) to join in. I might be there the week after Christmas but I hae a lot to do while I'm there. But I go down there periodically.
I'm glad people like the green water. It was an amazing colour for sure! And the inverted ND grad helped it not get blown out.
Patrick
Amazing as is most of your stuff WOW ! - Thanks for your comment re take a seat your stuff is inspirational !
Great shot Patrick. Saved a bit of money taking your own shot then !!!!
Looks a never ending tunnel.
Brian
Hello Patrick.
Worth, a full price.! You should offewr him that for his price. lol
Good work, perfect capture.
Jan
An outstanding image Patrick, this is the longest pier i have ever seen, it seems to go on for miles and miles!
Loved reading your info for this stunning shot, when I viewed it in the large size it was if I had a Christmas present!.....fantastic, thank you.
Richard
Thanks for your comments!
Brian, I actually took one recently that is even longer. I'll upload it later.
Good Idea Jan.
Edmund (GlosTomcat), I jsut took one that is even longer. I'll put it up later.
You're welcome richard.
Patrick
great shot a pity you did not see it for yourself. Would have made it better. With your talent I am sure it is better than the one in the gallery.
I want some of my stuff in that Carmel Gallery Patrick LOL
Flamin Nora thats pricey!!!!!!!!
Anyway any price is good but it dont beat seeing your work on other peoples walls
Dave
Very interesting angle used Patrick! Great composition and detail!
Like the detail, symmetry, the colours in the concrete and gren of the sea complement each other beautifully.
MikeA.
Totally and utterly stunning! The simplicty and geometry of the composition is just wonderful. The tinality and textures of the concrete are superb too, the misty water contrasting the hard concrete so well. Love it!
Ben
Thanks for your comments!
Ben, be careful or I'll upload more of these that I recently captured with even more of this sort of effect!
Patrick
Very Impressive, Patrick....Unsure of what the image looked like in the gallery for you, but with the lighting you captured, this is just Beautiful!!
I had every intention of master-piecing a mod just for you, but found there wasn't an option.....![]()
OK...Just kidding....![]()
Very nice!
Click.....
Suzan ![]()
Thanks for looking!
Suzie, the other shot seemed plain. There was bright sun coming in at an angle and it was a shorter exposure so there were little chaotic waves in spots. The quality was there but the time of day seemed wrong to me. But you know how art is...
Patrick
I can hardly word how great a shot this is!! The placement is so perfect and the mood just drew mw in! Great work!
Love the fact that the heavy concrete structure appears to be floating and that vanishing point is hypnotic!
I know how what lengths you'll go to in order to get a shot, so if you say it was "slightly dangerous", I bet your woman had to charge that much for her print to cover her insurance bill! ![]()
