B52-H - Stratofortress (BUFF)

The mighty sub-sonic bomber that has been the mainstay of the US airborne strike arm for five decades. Contracted for in 1952 and reached service in 1965 the B52 has seen active service in the Cold War, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. It has been so long in service that one US aircrew memberís father and grandfather also served with B52s. Though reduced in numbers from the original 740 to currently 94 the BUFF is expected to serve until the 2040s!! (BUFF - big ugly fat fella - or other expressions starting with f)

This example, based in Louisanna, conducted a fly-by at the Leuchars airshow this year and is caught in the September soft evening light. The colour scheme, or rather non-colour scheme, seems so muted for such an impressive aircraft - not at all in keeping with itís massive weapons potential.

Everytime I see a B-52 in the sky I tell myself how majestic it looks .

I have yet to see one of these in the air.

It's on my list of aircraft that I must see before I die. Or they stop flying them!

First time for me too - quite majestic and the 'smokey joe' image is really true to life. The black trail could be seen way out on the approach before any airframe detail was apparent. Unfortunately it only did a single fly-by. Good to hear from you...............Pat

Thanks Bren - been a busy summer, a month in Canada and a g.daughter's wedding seemed to soak up all the spare time. Back in harness now, maybe a wee bit slower!!
