F4 - Phantom
The definitive combat aircraft of the 60s and 70s the Phantom served in variety of roles for some twelve different air forces. Over 5,000 wer built in several variant types and it was in active service with the US forces as late as the Gulf War - as the Wild Weasel variant. The F4 also served with the RAF and RN having an important role in the air defence of the Falklands subsequent to the end of hostilities there. While ‘brutish’ in appearance it was much approved by aircrews all over the world who lovingly referred to it as ‘a triumph of thrust over aerodynamics’ !
Seen here in the livery of the famous Triple Nickel (555 Sqdn) colours during the Vietnam conflict.

Sorry but I must correct your statement the F4 played absolutely no part in the Falkland War by then we had no carriers that could take them and we were equipped with Harriers and the Argies were kitted out with Super Etendards that delivered the exocets, Skyhawks and I believe Mirages. Yes we had flown Phantoms off our old carriers but I never heard of the Argies flying them

Thanks for your input - perhaps I was a little 'loose' in my wording re the Falklands and Phantoms. 29 Sqdn was detached to Ascension in 1982 but was restricted to base defence there, subsequently 23 Sqdn went to Stanley in March 1983, again for base defence duties. Have amended the wording to reflect this - thanks for the update, much appreciated.
