Fallen Eagle
(A companion image to ‘Some you win…..’ - posted recently)
An Bf109E sits in an English field in November having come second best in a most recent combat. For the disconsolate Luftwaffe pilot the well worn phrase of the time ‘for you the war is over’ strikes home hard. A 64 Sqdn RAF Spitfire wheels overhead checking that he is well and truly down.
A common occurrence in the winter days of 1941-42 when the Luftwaffe ‘boys from Abbeville’ would often run intruder missions into southern England. The 109 shown is in the markings JG 52 based in France while the Spitfire is in 64 Sqdn livery flying out of Hornchurch, close to London.
The composite is constructed from airshow photos of the Bf109 and Spitfire and the b/g from my archives. The pilot was seen at Duxford with one of the re-enactment groups - other small additions etc have been made here and there.
