P51 Mustang - 'Big Beautiful Doll'

One of the most colourful and charismatic P51s was lost at Duxford Legends Day on Sunday. During the last event of the day the 'Doll' was in involved in a mid-air collision with another aircrfat in the formation, a Douglas Skyraider. The impact was such that the P51 fuselage was cut almost in two, probably severing the rudder and elevator controls. The pilot immediately started bail out procedures and although the whole episode was below 500ft the P51 pilot managed a successful parachute landing. The P51 is now a large hole in the ground! The Skyraider, missing about four feet of the starboard wing managed to recover controlled flight and carried out a near normal landing. The incident has left a huge hole in the local warbird scene but, most importantly, no one was injured.
The image shows the 'Doll' in happier days.

A very crisp image of the plane, Pat.
And I did see the news item on the crash...just glad to know that no one was seriously injured......could have been so very much worse.
Ronnie.

A cracking image Pat as always. I was at work at the time when the message came through about it, didn't take long for it to be on YouTube and thus removed for the AAIB procedings. Some things never change. It proved the point of how fast a fighter pilots reactions are to get out and technically freefall to open a chute at under 500feet. Hats off to that guy and how the skyraider did his break on a climb'bank way too early, he forgot the count to 5

Super image, The Doll will be missed by many, Seeing the wreckage on TV was a sad day for all P51 fans.

The fact that no one was killed is a miracle.....!!!

I doubt they will re-build her.....Sad
