Don't normally put family pictures in, but thought this worth comment. Think I should have cloned out the shadows, top right, looking at it now. Grandson from one son and grand daughter from other setting off to explore at a seaside caravan park - under supervision of course.
Think back views can be equally as good as front? Canon SX40HS on auto so about 1/800 @ f5.6 and ISO100. Some cropping to remove other bits and pieces.

This could be very good Paul. It is a different one for the family album, given the faces are not being shown, but the holding of hands and the rear view make this a very good and also a very appealing shot.
Why I say 'could' is that I believe your thoughts were correct in that the top right shadows, IMHO would be betetr removed. I find the proximity to the 'give way sign' a little worrying, but I am certain you would not have taken this had there been traffic about. Caravan parks seem to attract boy racers on occasion, despite low speed limits, and it is usually the visitors rather than the residents.
So maybe the place to take this was on a long straight section of road, with no junctions in sight - but maybe it would have been difficult then to keep caravans out of the frame.
Forgive my ramblings, but imagine this on a straight, long and dusty road seemingly leading to nowhere! Excellent and different portrayal of your grand children. I will upload a mod in an attempt to portray my meaning.

Great capture, just the picture anyone with children loves. Like Frank I feel the white lines, patches in road etc. spoil the image. The mod is an good improvement. If these were my grand children I would relocate them with photoshop onto a beach or path to somewhere.
Technical aspects are all fine.

Nice mod, Frank. A considerable improvement. Both kids families think this and a few others taken at the same time are super, and the problem with family pictures is that those closely associated don't see the problems. The comments change the image from a family shot to one with more general interest. There is an excellent bit of suitable road near our holiday home so will try and set it up.

I think that the rear view works fine Paul.
Personally, I wouldn't clone anything at all.
I've come to the conclusion that if something's present when I take a shot, provided it's not a major intrusion or growing out of someone's ear, I'll leave it alone.

This is really great, Paul. I love it.. it reminded me the old B&W shot I saw long time ago, and it was that shot made me realise the key point of photography-light. It was that photo started my learning...Thanks for that.
I also realised that if the photographer loved the subject deeply, the affection would be shown on the image, it would make a great photo.
Personally, I would keep the right side road, because that what life is... I may clone off the dark coloured tree and shadow, and the dark colour on the left of the boy's hat. I just wonder if the girl's hat could be darker.. it looks slightly burn( if it is the right definition), the colour fades away a bit. Anyway, they are all trivial matters. It is a lovely and great shot.

Have you ever thought of CanonEOS M? I couldn't find price a few days ago. I just had a look a moment ago, Jessops price is £769! (18-55mm lens);Canon EF-M Lens mount adapter is £139.99. They will get cheaper..I think, and more for you to play.. They should sell it as DSLR, body and lens separately. Have a nice day, and thank you vey much for your helpful critique, Paul.

I waited a long time for the Canon CSC camera - it didn't appear, so we bought thew SX, then along comes the CSC! It is rather expensive though and I shall wait for a considerable price drop and, as I see it, with my existing Canon lenses I wouldn't gain much in terms of size. They need to do more lenses for it.
The SX has proved popular and shots from it are already in several libraries, so the quality is more than acceptable. It cost £320.

Yes, I agree with you Paul. i was looking at sony nex 5n the other day,it's £399.95 in Jessop, because of it's wide dynamic range..a lot cheaper than CanonEOS E, only the body and lens colours are not quite match...and then I saw Canon EOS E. CanonEOS E is Sonynex 7n's price..I guess the price will drop eventually. I don't know much about cameras, I wonder if this small camera body would work well with large lens even it can interchage with Canon lenses. It would be difficult to hold it (balance), I guess. Of course, it would also lose the advantage of the small body( easy to carry) if it works with large lens. But for Canon users, the interchangeable lens of CanonEOS M sounds very attractive... I thought that you must have had a lot of Canon lenses..
