Young lad on top of climbing frame in adventure playground. Sky added later. Had real problems with hair and used blur tool to try and get realistic effect. Difficult to assess at this size but is it still rather artificial?

Canon Powershot SX40HS at about 500mm equivalent and on auto, so about 1/500 @ f5.6. Even had ISO on auto. I find this camera good for grab shots but rather slower to use than my DSLR's. Sky also from same camera.

Nice idea and nice composition. Unfortunately you can see it's faked because of the lighting. The boy and sky are lit differently....his hair looks lit by warm directional light, of which there is none in the background.
The actual process looks fine, and maybe if you changed the colour balances of the shots so they more closely match it would be better.

I think with the use of a solid defined silhouette you might have pulled this one off. However one cannot question your imagination and forethought. A great effort Paul, and I personally would love to see this image, worked a little further, as I believe it has got so much potential.

hi Paul,
i think its short of its potential too. 20 years ago sillouettes like this were quite popular, usually with a sunset sky but here and particularly now in this more complex era of photography i feel its missing another ingredient somewhere. something perhaps he his observing, ill leave that to your imagination. but an easy one would be a small strip of sea with a yacht with backlit sails in the distance to match the hair lighting. not being harsh here but take a look at BPE salon circuit list and then at some of the acceptances to see how madly complex the created in photoshop images need to be now in order to succeed. believe me i cant keep up with some of them. in truth its the day of the web designer 1st and photographer second which i find amusing to be fair. people who are brilliant at photoshop and artistic are faring way better than seasoned veterans in that sense.

as it stands i think you put a good deal of work in, but the sky is not interesting enough nor paler in tones to allow him to stand off the background. also we have contre jour on the hair yet not evident in the sky.

so what you did you pulled off but im not sure the image has arrived at its final state yet.

regards
Phil

Thanks. I may start again with a different sky and warmer lighting.
