I don't have any pets...but I do like taking photos of animals.
Last week I was busy taking pictures at the Dorset Show, lots of animals there so I tried to find something for the challenge.
I saw the opportunity when the owners of these two just happened to be standing near the wooden sculpture, I asked them to put the dogs next to it & for a few seconds the dogs obliged. I've cloned out the leads, added a bit of blur & took the vivid blue of some plastic containers, out of the background.

Superb pet portrait. I bet the one in the middle got a prize for obedience.
Critique Buddy Comment.
Terribly wooden models you have there Penny
I have to admit, like you, I don't have any pets, but lucked out with finding one too.
I like the idea of the set up, but the crop seems very close to the dogs, especially the one on the left. Cloning out the leads was a good idea, but it does make the one on the left's collar look rather peculiar now at that funny angle!
Still, well spotted moment.
Thanks for the comments.
I hadn't noticed the bit of lead. I shall try to do something about it.![]()
This was the first 'grab shot', the other where there was more at the side the puppy was on the move, she only stayed like that for a moment. (Hence V2 with the single sitting dog.)
I tried various dogs competeing in the terrier racing but my shutter speed was a bit too slow for the best ones.
really like the way you got them to stay in that position for a shot - that's classy, must be well trained and the shot shows that well .
I know it was a grab shot so well done - things that you'd like in an ideal world would be a shorter statue, so the heads are a bit closer, more width to the shot so the dogs are not on the edge of the frame and maybe less stuff in the background - but you can't really cater for that in this circumstance.
nice ![]()
Thanks Ade, it was a bit of fun rather than a serious pet portrait but I couldn't let the opportunity pass.![]()
My Critique Buddies comment, Hi Penny, this is a brilliant moment to capture, the unusual carved dog and the 2 lovely dogs either side. They look like they are looking straight at you, though the carved dog is looking off on a slightly different angle. The background though is distracting and perhaps a larger aperture would have helped, or some photoshop type mod. I also wonder if in photoshop whether the crop might be slightly wider and rotated 1 or 2 degrees anticlockwise to make the subjects more vertical. But it’s certainly a shot I would have been happy to spot take, nice one. Cheers, Stuart
Ahhh dogs, much more my thing!
I love the idea and they are such gorgeous dogs, V1 the crop is a bit tight but in V2 it looks as thought you have blurred the background in PS and there is a definite line where it ends so it looks rather false and detracts from the image.
V1 is technically better but I like the composition of V2 best ![]()
