I've never seen one with so much detail in the head region, and I've never noticed that transluscent body before. It's a superb example of using macro to educate and illustrate.

It's possible the white stuff may be some kind of fungal spores rather than pollen. I have a photo in my p/f of a fly that has been killed by something that looks very similar to white stuff on the hoverfly. If it is, then it's not yet in the advanced stages as it was with my fly.
