Birbhum is a district in the State of West Bengal in India. And this is all about Bolpur, a town in the district. The Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore visualised a University town in a small township in Bolpur and set up his own dreams in this peaceful landscape and called the place "Shantiniketan", the abode of tranquility. Soon after India became independent, in 1951, the institution was given the status of a university and was renamed Visva Bharati University.
This small cottage is found within the vast campus of this university and named in Bengali as "Taladhwaja". This is a typical hut with a thatched roof built around a toddy palm tree (taal tree) with part of its trunk and its huge palm leaves stretching out over the top. This artistic architecture was built by a nature loving individual sometimes during the period of late 19th and early 20th century.
