From Haydock Park Races
I thought the man in the raincoat made a great subject.
I don't think it is a crowd pleaser but I like it and want to get some feedback on it. So all comments are welcome!

1/125 sec, iso 100, f6.3, 53mm
processed in capture one LE and then converted to B&W and tweaked in photoshop. Is it a little oversharp? I've tried to create some emphasis around their faces but wonder if it is overdone (I do have a tendency!)

tells the story - they look like bookies, cigars and headsets
also the fact they're looking at the monitor so intently says that there's a race on and they're hoping for the fave to fall!
think it's a terrific portrait. very well converted. Doesn't feel overdone to me. only doubt I have is about the format. Think I would prefer a square format here. The best crop IMO would be cropping just below his right hand, as it would also leave the best part of his raincoat in the picture, but if the before version is the complete photo, than with that crop you'll never get to square. another possibility would be cropping below his elbow though.
But again... terrific as is.

I did think about cropping it square, but I like his pocket too much and yes, the before version is the straight out of camera version so I didn't have much chance. I don't often look at shots with a square crop in mind, although some seem straight forward, I confess it is normally an afterthought.
Two great characters nicely caught. It's difficult to make comments about sharpness on here because we can only see the result of the recompression of a small jpeg. Sharpening needs to be done as the last thing before any final output.. so you should sharpen differently if say you're preparing the larger file size for a print

Excellent capture Julia the chap sucking feverishly on a cigarette looks like his day isn't going as planned!.............I don't agree about the square crop
the texture of the coat adds to the image, I'll bet that pockets deep!.......LOL
The B/W is a good call.
Excellent capture, nice intense feel to it.

I disagree with koen on the crop as with any picture that needs enviromental clues ,you need to keep them in the shot as your picture should really stand up without an in depth explanation, and the betting slips on the ground are one of those clues, if it was cropped above as koen suggested it could be an assistant director at wimbledon checking out a camera angle at a tennis match " wearing what looks like a really bad wig" Like this sort of photography a lot, nice work.
