A bit of fun & experimenting in GIMP. I decided to try and do away with the background in this view. In the end it reminded me of the pictures once seen on the backs of playing cards.

The image of the horse is very good, but the background just does not do it. Maybe a different colour, grey and then use the lighting effects on the background, similar to what you have done.
