Toasting some muffins for tea I wondered how many Joules were being used. A Joule is a unit of electrical energy equal to one watt per second . So my toaster working at 1000 watts took 192 seconds to toast the muffin, that's 192,000 Joules of energy. The energy is converted to heat by passing it through a thin wire which glows red hot.
