I think compositionally this is a stunning photo. It does look washed out though in colours and I keep imagining how I would alter it - probably do it in B&W, fade the background and edges to a soft focus - make the emphasis on the gorgeous little face and the direction of the mothers face.
Try - converting to b&w, doing a curves adjustment to deepen contrast, blur those distracting leaves, even the hair and childs clothes a bit and really emphasise the faces.
