Martin - by saving the RAW image as a 16bit tiff I could then tonemap it in the Photomatix HDR program, I was struggling to get anything using all the different sliders in this program, so I left everything at default, this produced a very pale image but by adjusting levels I came up with a result, it left a banding effect in the sky which I blurred out. This technique is probably not the right way to do it and has not worked so well when I've tried it on other pictures - I guess this one was just luck.
