Looking towards the Trough of Bowland
Obviously I lack the experience of the Davemead and fvg, but I prefer the first image. The crop takes away the character of the skye and cloud formation and to me leaves what is an excellent photograph looking flat. I might have used photoshop to lighten the shadow along the edge of the woodland thus highlighting the large tree in the centre left. By the same token one could use the same mode to darken the highlights to increase the contrast in the sky.
This is just my opinion, please feel free to ignore.
