Very beautiful, in a haunting way. Scary, too.

It would make a very powerful diptych to do a similarly-processed picture depicting a young Palestinian woman in a contemporary West Bank setting.

It's hard to reconcile beauty in art with some of the terrible events it brings to mind. On the other hand, last week, I saw the statue at Liverpool Street Station in London dedicated to the children of the Kindertransport: the project that brought unaccompanied Jewish children to Britain and safety in 1938 and 1939, and while that brings tears to my eyes, it also makes me proud that my country was willing to offer sanctuary then - even if it seems less willing now...
