Certainly works well in mono Dougie, good details and tones too
Mono suites this Dougie, gentle mood.
I agree that this image works well in B and W, Dougie, but having been back to the colour original a week or so back, I feel the the colour of the sunlit grasses really stands out in that version, and that some of that impact is lost here.
However that's just my opinion.
Having said that, had I never seen the original, I would have been more than pleased viewing this version.
A stunning landscape, which works beautifully in this sumptuous monochrome. A splendid tonal range and plenty to feast my eyes upon.
It is a lovely mono but I think I agree with Ronnie that the colour version looked even better.
Oh well, this is crisp and clear, yes!
a most wonderful scene and so well photographed.
Now a problem.....I think there is some white fringing along the LH side mountain top.What is the cause of this Dougie as i occasionally get it on my images.
Is it down sizing the image
Instant thoughts: those reeds are supremely delicate, are they not? This is where monochrome concentrates the eye on line and form rather than any other considerations.
I am reminded of the fable of La Fontaine (and probably Aesop and others) in which the sturdy oak tree mocks the delicate reed, yet after the storm the reed remains to lament the fallen oak.
Food for thought.
Oh, I think the contrast in V2 is slightly better).
Danny I'm not sure I've just looked at the original for V2 before downsizing and I see no fringe at all. It could be the sharp line between white and black causing it, but the short answer is I don't know.
Following Danny's comment I tried blowing both versions up (well not literally... ), I can see a little white fringing in V2, on the left side of the left-hand peak, towards the summit. It's much less pronounced in V1, but there is a hint. I wouldn't have noticed it without Danny's prompting though...
Despite fringing I much prefer V2, because it gives the water a sort of clarity, we can see through to the bed so there is greater depth, to balance the increased texture in the sky. Depth and height...

V2 for me, with or without the fringe. Fringing is everywhere, I think it is in the original file and gets progressively more noticable with processing, sharpening etc. A lot depends on the make up of the image, sometimes it's hidden. Thats my excuse anyway, makes me feel better when I see it in my shots. Careful retouching can help.
I'm going with v2 out of these two Dougie. It's interesting how b&w gives an entirely different feel to a landscape.
I wish I'd had my little ladders along here.

Excellent mono, Dougie with v2 just edging it on detail and impact.
I do prefer v2 for the sky details
Mono doing what mono does best... a shot with a lovely atmosphere and a beautifully balanced composition. My preference is for the higher contrast of v2. But I am a high contrast kind of guy

This really works for me Dougie. The reeds puncturing that smooth water looks beautiful. I prefer V1.
