My new Sony camera

The Sony A7r was announced through the review web sites across the world and exploded like a firework display, An Nex size camera with a full frame sensor and interchangeable lenses, this is for me thinks I, my present kit is so large and heavy I need a lighter bagful of goodies to continue my hobby of a lifetime.

A video appraisal appeared on YouTube from a Canadian Camera Store in Vancouver and looked great, the review was glowing on both the Sony A7 and the more expensive A7r, easy to hold in one hand and nicely balanced. Then the lack of charger was mentioned in the passing that they didn't get one in the box from Sony, maybe an oversight.

It later became obvious that there was no charger supplied but a cable that allowed the battery to be charged in camera. Fine maybe for the occasional shooter, but if you go outfox the day you need more than one battery and a few cards. 5 hours it takes they say to charge the battery overnight. So you have two batteries needing charged overnight, I don' t think so. Stay up or set the alarm to change batteries in the camera to charge and get a nights sleep.

So I trawl the camera stores to find a charger, no Sony charger available, I found out that the charger is the same as for the Sony Nex5 so I try to find one of those, ALL SOLD OUT.
So here's the thing I've ordered the new camera and I'm forced to ask Sony SUPPORT for assistance, they give me a couple of websites to get my required charger from. (their words not mine) No Joy nobody has them, across the Globe it seems. So I go back to Sony SUPPORT and a couple of days later I get another website to try, they have one but after it arrives I discover it's not official Sony stock. So much for Sony SUPPORT.

I've used so many digital cameras since they came out and can't recall one that was supplied without a charger for the battery. So why would a huge multi national company likeSony do this to their customers across the world?
Call me old fashioned but it crossed my mind that in the rush to get this camera out onto the market for Christmas, that somebody FORGOT to order a few thousand Battery Chargers. Yes a few thousand, I just know I'm not the only photographer that likes having at least one charger when I go on a trip.

I'll be interested to see if I get any response from this Japanese Camera Manufacturer or will an inscrutable silence fall over the matter.

Watch this space.

Looks like Sony have messed up on the battery charger.

I recently saw both the A7 / A7r down at my local camera shop - Park Cameras and thought it would be great for an hand held " about town " or an event / location where a tripod would be unsuitable / not allowed type camera.

A few manufacturers are leaving out a proper charger these days, but I think it's an essential, for all the reasons you've given.
