...many of the trees still had leaves attached but the winds were blowing them off in a blizzard of crispy colour.
Birch trees are always lovely in Autumn.

Oh yes, definitely to my taste. Long shallow frame split 50/50 by the river bank, falling diagonals, and those two strong dark lines on the right. The leaves make a veil to view the structure of the composition through, a sort of natural texture layer.
Just a thought - flip this horizontally so that the trunks are on the left and you get a totally different feel.

By cropping thus you have intensified the colours and density of the remaining leaves. The contrasting lines of the branches, dipping in on the left and rearing up on the right, are immensely pleasing.
Birch trees are lovely at any time of year; here they are at their very best.
