Something, as they say, completely different from me - not a saddhu or a sandbank in sight. No flash - using lens wide open in what light there was & hence shallow DoF. See what you think.

Works for me. The shallow DOF helps I'd say.

I like it overall, dof, clear focus on one person, dark non distracting background.

I like this very much. Available light is always a winner in my book. The tones are great; the plane of focus is on the nearer girl's face and includes the bridge, tailpiece and lower bout of the instrument while her bowing arm and wrist, together with the other girl's fingers, are tolerably in focus.
The essence of the story, if I might put it thus, is in the second girl's face. She is paying rapt attention to her leader - though perhaps she is uneasy at playing second fiddle...
Superb photograph.

Thanks for the comments. I always saw the shallow DoF as a bonus. It's one of things I love about prime lenses. I'm with you on available light, Bill (although that's probably because I feel inadequate when it comes to flash / indoor lighting techniques) - thanks for the extensive commentary. I thought about b & w Ange - and I might try it yet - but the rich colour of the violins was one of the features that appealed to me in the image

The image (to me) seems to be giving out the message of the muscian at the back looking on in awe. Dont know if thats what you were try ing to achieve, but i think its a very powerful shot, enhanced by the lighting.

This is a wonderful study Rob; the light completely isolates the subjects; I love the detail and rich tones and the DOF is spot on for me with the area of focus mirroring the theme of the scene.
Very deserving of the HC in my opinion - big congrats Smile

A really good study - wonderful light and use of dof.
I like how the two bows are going at different angles, somehow that's the dot over the "i" for me.
